FULL APPEARANCE:
Mavis is a middling-tall woman built like she’s done hard labor her entire life, mostly because she has. While sun and sweat has worn her skin to the quality and color of worn leather, the rest of her has remained very fit and spry. A couple lines crease her face on either side of her mouth and the corners of her eyes, but they haven’t furrowed too deep yet. Her hair has fully blown to a rather pretty silver-gray, which is usually cropped short and spiked to not get in the way of mining. Or helmets. Or goggles.
When not wearing protective gear for big work, Mavis is usually found in overalls with pockets for her tools and a long-sleeved shirt with the sleeves rolled up. She favors the same charcoal gray of her craft hall. She also typically wears heavy-duty boots and gloves to protect extremities from falling things.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
Mavis comes across as much younger than her near half of a century, more than willing to mingle and banter with the younger crowd. She’s able to keep up well enough, and intends to do so for as long as she possibly can, believing that when she lets herself slow down is when she’ll actually start to fall apart and feel her age. She can be a little loud, coarse, and crass; used to environments where there’s either no one around to hear her curse or those who do hear her have probably said something worse within the last candlemark.
She loves to participate in competitions and contests, not really caring where she falls as long as it’s not dead last, just to see how she stacks up against the younger folk. Her favorite sorts are strength-based contests where she can surprise people, but contests of speed and mind are still delights. Sometimes she overdoes it, though - either not knowing where her limits lie or choosing to ignore them, and might lay herself up or otherwise injure herself doing something she really shouldn't be doing so cavalierly. Once she became so exhausted far into the mines chasing a particularly rich node that it took Mavisk the better part of half a day to drag her out. She often tries to hide her "rests" under the guise of taking a break, or blaming it on Mavisk being tired.
Mavis is incredibly self-conscious about her age and the fact that she doesn’t really have any family or friends to speak of who aren’t fellow tradesmen. While she actually would really love a relationship and, in fact, spends a lot of her spare time in the creche with children, she can get extremely defensive about the fact that she doesn’t have either. To the point of pushing people away or getting into shouting matches if they bring it up.
HISTORY
FAMILY: None of Note
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: N/A
BIRTHPLACE: Crom Hold
HISTORY:
Mavis was born in Crom Hold “right before things started falling apart,” as she likes to put it. The crop blights started when she was barely a turn and a half old, though they took some time to reach Crom, she’s well accustomed to the notion of rationing and having to stretch food as long as you could make it go. Despite not being well fed between the crop blights when she was an infant and the wherry culling as a toddler, she grew like a weed, tall and strong.
When the mad golds took power in High Reaches, Mavis was initially too young to be stolen as a Candidate; though High Reaches was still too close for comfort. Hearing the rumors of what happened there, she’d often hide when she saw dragon wings overhead, and became well acquainted with the dark spots of Crom Hold. She found herself enjoying exploring caves, and collecting shiny stones that she found that had no particular value other than being pretty.
Spurred on by her enjoyment of terra and the fact that the dragons couldn’t steal you when you were underground, Mavis left home to apprentice at the nearby Masterminer Hall as soon as she was old and large enough to hold a pick. She took to it eagerly, spending many hours honing both her body and her mind. She was in no particular rush to hurry her apprenticeship, and became a Journeyman at the age of twenty turns.
While mutations hatched everywhere and the war raged, there was ever a demand for metal - more so than the normal demand for the precious resource. Mavis did quite well for herself, and while there was a little bit of guilt associated with profiting off of the war, she quietly built up quite the nest egg. It was actually the first sighting of the Golden Ghost in turns near Fort Hold that gave her the inspiration to purchase her wher egg.
She had always heard that firelizards were a miner’s best friend, and in her mind, scaling it up to a wher was even better. Not only did they have amazing darkvision and just as keen a sense of smell to pick up bad gasses, they could speak, and she could use one to take longer trips and haul more ore or other goods. Mavisk hatched in Spring 2761, and she used the fact that she’d saved a great deal of coin over the turns to take the next two turns off training and bonding with him. He became her best friend and often her only source of company in some of her wider excursions to further-located nodes.
So the work began anew. While certainly aware of the conflicts and Threadfall, Mavis stayed out of it by virtue of always keeping herself busy and digging. The idea of stopping never really occurred to her. She enjoyed what she was doing, and the rest of the world was being pretty frightening, so why not stay in her own?
The result, though, was a fairly wealthy, lonely, middle-aged woman who had never seen much more than the bowels of Pern. When Semaca was first established it piqued her interest - a new place, unexplored, with potentially new or plentiful ores. Not the same old mineshafts. But she was hesitant, even when the request for miners and excavators came. It wasn’t until she heard the rumors several turns later of interesting gemstones found that she decided she’d had enough of the North; and to pursue her old childhood love of pretty and interesting rocks.
Figuring out how to get Mavisk to the Southern Continent was fairly tricky. It took her nearly a season to convince him to allow a dragon to lift him, and even then, he panicked and complained the entire time. She wasn’t the greatest fan of the experience either, given how her mind still associated dragons with kidnapping children, but it was over before they knew it.
They arrived at Semaca officially in Late Fall 2770, and given it was their first time in a “proper” weyr, Mavis and Mavisk spent a while familiarizing themselves with their new surroundings before falling in with Chopin Squad. Finally settled in just as Winter came around, the two are now well positioned to help with expanding the weyr and exploring for new metal or the rumored gemstones.
