In this alternate Pern, the long interval led, not to the disappearance of the dragons, but to a revolution in Pernese culture. When Thread failed to return on schedule, the population spread out across the planet, accompanied by dragons who saw opportunities to help build something new. As settlements sprang up in new regions, dragons and their riders followed. In the North, two weyrs remained as bastions of tradition, while the others became homes for crafts and communities.
These generations of peace led to a new kind of Pern but the return of Thread brought with it a reckoning. Pern did not have enough dragons to face its ancient threat. In a daring gesture, Benden's Weyrleaders took several leaps through time to recruit what riders they could from the past. However, this trip had unforeseen consequences - another Wing of riders appeared out of Between, claiming to have followed from the Eighth Pass. As Pern struggles to readjust to its ancient enemy, the mysterious group is a welcome addition, but something about them doesn't seem quite right…
