Bad Influences ( Arc )

The center part of the Weyr. It stretches out from stone to stone. Grasslands stretch across the dirt, and there is a freshwater lake on the southwest side, near the feeding grounds.

Bad Influences ( Arc )

Tarquin was relieved that he'd finally gotten settled in. The build up to coming here had been something else. And while he was eager to start accruing knowledge on dragons, he'd been hesitant to interact TOO much with the other candidates. Not that he didn't trust them, but he wanted to see his sister first.

He wanted her opinion, her view of the weyr. had it treated her well? Had she adapted? He'd seen her from afar with a gorgeously colored dragon, and he'd wanted to meet them both somewhere where they could all talk. So probably not inside.

But where was she? She had lessons, sure but... How was he supposed to start looking? WHERE was he supposed to start looking? The place was vast...

Some august bronzes thought it below themselves to watch the lesser people scurry through the weyr. Louicyth thought they denied themselves one of the world's greatest pleasures. What was life without curiosity? And what could be more amusing than people who thought themselves somebodies?

They are not your toys. They are not lower beings. They are people, Quinn reminded Louicyth. She could feel his mind turning over them with all the detached interest she had held for the ants crawling across the fields of her home.

She glanced up only briefly. Her heart froze at the sight of a familiar head of brown hair. It couldn't be. He couldn't be here. She had done it all so he would never have to be here...

Louicyth's eyes turned to the boy his rider was trying not to stare at. He looked much like any other human, a candidate by his knots, Why do you try and play the coward? It is beneath you and there are no answers there.

Quinn gave her dragon a mild glare. He made it very easy to hate him, Because that's what humans do. We hide from things. Life's hard and there's no need to make it harder. It also can't be him.

Let's find out, Louicyth said with deceptive mildness, Candidate- you may attend me.

That voice in his head made him startle. He looked around and saw that the weird colored dragon was staring at him. Wait..."Me?" He asked, trotting over. "Hey... I recognize you! You're that dragon that was following Quinn! Which means..."

He darted around him, looking... And-!

"Quinn!" He'd run up and give her a hug... "Oh it's great to see you! Ohhhh I missed you!" He pulled back and looked... a little offended. "When did you get a dragon? He's a huge ol' thing! Oh goodness!"

Quinn returned her brother's hug more through instinct than conscious decision. He was here. Her brother was here. For the first time in nearly two turns, she was hearing her family's voice. Seeing one of their faces. Her brother was more than a scrawled name on a bag sent to Fort Hold with too few marks. He was here. And he'd missed her too.

"What are you doing here? You're not supposed to be here," Quinn's voice shook a little over the words. The weyr wasn't all their family's stories had painted it as but it was still a brutal, hard, dangerous place where riders died and life went on with barely a pause.

Tarquin stood taller than she did now and looked more youth than child. She'd missed him- all of them.

I am Louicyth, Louicyth said as he looked over this human who shared his rider's bloodline. He had never met the boy, but he had his riders memories, more real and lasting than his own. He observed, voice a bit distant, And you are Tarquin. My rider misses you and yet she is dismayed you have come. She fears what will happen to you. But you share her spark. It was inevitable, perhaps, your path would lead here.

"No, it wasn't- isn't. Tarquin is young and clever. He has a future."

And you do not?

Quinn's future was to spend the rest of her days sharing her mind with a dragon that saw the world as a Harper's play, never knowing which threadfall would be her last. She had only what she had now. Her life would never change- unless she lost Louicyth and was condemned to the brokenness of the dragonless. Her brother deserved more.

"Not the sort of future he should have."

Tarquin's smile faded a bit. "What do you mean I'm not supposed to be here? Of course I am, I was told by a dragon that I was worthy of being a Candidate." The hurt in his voice was palpable. He'd had to put with with his parents telling him he shouldn't be a dragonrider, that they were all brutes and the like... Why shouldn't he be allowed to learn that for himself.

He brightened as he was addressed by the dragon. "Heh, thank you, Louicyth. I've spent a long time wanting to just sit with a dragon, talk to one. Not be talked to or talked at by one." Another frown at Quinn. "Of course I'm clever. But I wanted to be here. I wanted to learn about dragons and whers and stuff like that..."

They had Searched Tarquin. Quinn's heart sank. He was so young. So small. She wasn't sure why she was surprised. She hadn't been any older when they'd first Searched her. She'd been at Fort Hold at the time too. She still hadn't thought it would happen again. They weren't a weyr family. Why should more than one of her parents' children be potential riders?

"If you want to study, Tarquin, you should be a Harper or a Healer," Quinn said gently, "Healers know more about how dragons and whers work than we do, I suspect, and Harpers could teach you the history."

She took a deep breath, "I'm sure you'd be a fine rider. But this isn't our world and it shouldn't be. It's not...it's not like how we thought it was, but it's not like home either. It's not the life any of us want for you...Our parents can't bear the loss of another child."

Why do you equivocate, rider? It dilutes your argument, Louicyth asked, as he turned his whirling gaze towards Tarquin, She means that the life of a dragonrider is rarely safe or quiet and has limited time to devote to learning. Riders often die young, from thread, war, assassination...Even candidates are killed from time to time, by dragons who do not understand the value of their lights. But you seem a clever enough boy. You know this, don't you? And you came anyway. Was it only your questions that drove you? Or was there something more? Ambition, perhaps? Defiance? Some ill-fated noble urge?

"Don't listen to him, Tarquin. He's trying to manipulate you."

Nonsense. I merely wish to know him better. Is curiosity such a crime?

"..." Hearing Quinn talk like this... It broke his heart. "...They're not gonna lose another child." He insisted. "And I don't...! I don't wanna be a Harper or a Healer! They're the ones who kept telling me I shouldn't be a Rider! Everyone said that! And now YOU'RE saying it!"

He knew he sounded childish but... "You didn't want this for me,but I do! I want to be a Rider because I can't STAND the books! The skins! It's so boring, they expect me to sit still and shut up and not ask questions until Harper So and So is done ranting! I... I wanna know about dragons and why they pick the people they do! I want to know, all that I can't learn that in books! I can't be quiet ok? I wanna talk to people!" He had teared up a little as he looked up at Louicyth. "Does that answer your question? I'm dumb! I can't sit still and I wanna get my hands dirty and make bonds with people! Not sit in a classroom and gather dust all day!"

TW: Mentions of death, suicide

"Our parents are never going to come visit here, Tarquin. And we can't take a dragon back home. If you're a rider, you'll never see any of them again," Quinn reminded him. There couldn't be a new hold yet. They would have brought her back. They never would have let Tarquin go. But she still believed there would be. Some day.

Right now, she couldn't cry or scream or hug her brother. She needed to tell him the things they'd never told her, "The bronzerider who Searched me is dead, Tarquin. He was chasing a queen...that's how dragons choose their mates. She decided she didn't like the males chasing her. So she ordered them to kill each other. They did. About half of the former riders, including K'osh, killed themselves. Because a rider without a dragon...Look at the dragonless sometime. It's worse than being dead, I think...A few months later, someone poisoned the queen's rider. They both died too. Every time thread falls, some riders don't come home, Tarquin. And what if the war starts again and they ask you to burn some other family's hold? There's a reason, Tarquin, we don't want this for you."

Louicyth chuckled and ignored for the moment his rider's words. They could address that later, You sound so like your sister, you know. My rider isn't overly fond of books or harpers either. I always found them rather tiresome myself. People are far more interesting. I do not know why she expects of you things she cannot manage herself. Who told you you were a fool? It seems to me wiser to know yourself than to try and twist yourself into what you will never be.

TW: Mentions of death

Tarquin listened to his sister.

He frowned at the whole story, how many people had... Died... How one of the queens had died simply because their rider had been poisoned and killed... Dragons were surprisingly sensitive. But still! "...I don't want to burn people's Holds." He said simply. "That doesn't mean I have to! We're allowed to disobey orders if it's not right. And a leader who tells me to hurt people just because they want me to... They're a horrible leader! And I won't listen." Such childish answers. But the look in his eyes... He believed what he said, one hundred percent.

His gaze turned back to Louicyth. "D-don't get me wrong. Books aren't totally awful. I just can't sit still for long and I get bored. The print's so small and messy and it's hard to read. So I ask for help and well... I told you how well me asking things goes." He huffed.

He wasn't gonna be deterred. He was here! He was a Candidate! He was gonna work hard and be a good Rider someday. He'd protect Holds, not burn them!

Quinn sighed, her shoulders slumping. Why did Tarquin have to get stubborn on this? At Fort Hold, he had the entire world in front of him. He could be anything. Her voice was mostly resigned as she said, "You might not have a choice. Golds can compel other dragons to follow their orders. The ones at Fort don't do it very much, because it's frowned upon, but you always know they can. Besides which, you don't know what dragon you'll get, who they are and what they want and how they'll influence you."

She glanced meaningfully at Louicyth. She didn't think he was the sort to argue for an atrocity, not when it meant fewer people in the world for him to study. But that didn't mean he didn't try to steer her, make her doubt, change her into what he thought a rider should be.

Who told you I wish you to change, rider? Perhaps I simply find our little talks enlightening, Louicyth said idly.

Quinn rolled her eyes. She was sure he did. It didn't make him any less of an asshole.

Your sister finds reading challenging as well. She's been working with a candidate, an ex-guard, who perhaps would be willing to help you too, Louicyth offered. Because he could be helpful. He very much wanted this one to stay. There was that spark of curiosity to him. He knew how to ask a question, I can't read at all myself. One of many unfortunate limitations of the draconic mind. While books can be rather tedious by all accounts, if there is any value in their pages, it will forever remain hidden to me.

"Ugh... That's pretty nasty, actually. No one should be able to completely control a dragon if they don't wanna. But I guess that's good if you want the not to be awful..." He mused. Still, that was awful. To think Golds had THAT much power... what chance did he stand if he didn't Impress a gold himself?

"So? What's wrong with dragons? I don't care what dragon I get. I wanna just have a bond with one. Learn with them." Tarquin insisted... No need to get everything up in a bunch. A dragon was a dragon! Dragons were great!

He paused to listen to Louicyth... And brightened. "Hey, how about this? This guard friend can teach me how to read, and I'll read to you sometimes? We can learn and discuss stuff together, y'know? Nothing too boring, hopefully." Honestly? it was a good motivator. And good practice. If he had someone to read to and read with, he'd learn even faster!
