Adeline cares about her appearance deeply. Not in a vain sort of way, but only because she feels she has a standard to uphold. She will always come out looking presentable, and tries hard not to get excessively dirty. However, she’s not afraid to do what needs to be done, and will get dirty if need be. She will, however, feel less focused when she’s dirty as her level of cleanliness tends to ties into how she feels about herself.
She works hard to keep herself presentable, and will always make sure her clothing is clean. Be it for sleeping or for work, she will rarely allow her clothing or her person to be a mess for long. She always tries to keep her hair tied back in order to keep it out of her way.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
Prim and proper is the name of the game for Adeline.
She’s very polite, and will do her bet to maintain polite conversation with those around her. She is more used to people who are more privileged so she knows how upper class society works. This leaves her at a disadvantage when dealing with people who have come from less wealthy backgrounds. While she can usually hide or mask such a lack of interaction, she still often lets slip she’s not sure how to proceed due to a lack of knowledge on lower class customs. She tries very hard to level with others, but still finds it challenging. More often than not, she just makes things awkward and strange for those who don’t know her.
However, despite this, she is a very spirited woman who knows what she wants for herself. She has no problem speaking her mind about things she knows that she knows, and will not stand for falsehoods or trickery. She will concede to those around her who know better on topics she does not, but is not afraid to ask questions as to why things are the way they are. She also remains calm under pressure and takes a while to get genuinely mad.
Adeline is a firm traditionalist. She has no qualms against lower ranked people so long as they remain within the confines of their station. Even a lowly drudge can be accomplished in their own way but to elevate such people to something they are not is to defy the natural order and simply promotes chaos and inefficiency. Hierarchies exist for a reason. Dragons likewise should respect the place they were hatched to fill. She doesn’t see anything WRONG with Garnets and Greens clutching but to claim laying eggs makes them the equal of a gold is just silly. She was taught that people and things have a place in this world, and that deviation causes strife. She was taught that people and things have a place in this world, and that there’s no need for deviate when they don’t need to. And frankly, people who thought that wasn’t true could be dangerous to the stability of a weyr, or even the stability of Pern.
Intra-weyr politics is a touchy subject at times. She does wish to understand people as best as she can, but finds it hard to get into the political conversations. She finds she’s more suited to talking about Crafter politics as she’s more well versed in that. Color based talk, however, is something she stands firmly on. Her beliefs on the matter will be difficult if not impossible to change.
HISTORY
FAMILY:
Terest ( mother, Master Crafter ( Weaver ))
Halder (father, scribe)
BIRTHPLACE: Masterweaver’s Hall
HISTORY:
Adeline’s life was always one full of responsibility.
Her mother was a Mastercrafter, a talented weaver of tapestries, while her father was a historian. They often worked together to create works of art for impressive clients. Even when her mother was heavy with child, she refused to stop weaving.
Adeline was raised by her father, mostly, as her mother was often busy. Halder loved his daughter very much, but knew that she’d be expected to do great things with her life. After all, her mother had a reputation that she was not about to let be tarnished by a wayward daughter. So he started her early with her education on crafts. She wanted to be a weaver like her mother, but Terest had put her foot down, saying Adeline should make her own fortunes, not live in her shadow. She would not be out shined by her child.
Instead, at age 10, Adeline went into Vintercraft. Her father knew a Vintercrafter that was a family friend and helped her get training. Adeline moved to live with him at Southern Boll, a Hold not too far from where she grew up. She managed to get most of the basic spirits down by the time she was 16 turns old, but she preferred to work with wine. During this time, there was talk of marriage later in her life, once she was established as a crafter. But such talk would be silenced upon a chance encounter.
She would be helping deliver some drink orders to a Holder’s party when she was 17 Turns old, when one of the guests approached her. She was a dragonrider from High Reaches, and her dragon had sensed she had Candidate potential. Adeline was offered a place there as a Candidate, but there would be no rush to decide. The party wouldn’t be for a little while, and she’d be staying a few days after the fact. Adeline was surprised about this, and was unsure for the first time in a long time. But her mentor, who had helped her through her formative years, had faith in her abilities. She was talented at her craft, and he felt she’d be ok to keep training at High Reaches while working through Candidacy.
If she didn’t impress, she could still make a decent living as a wine seller. Besides, while Riding and the tasks that came with being a rider weren't exactly in her wheelhouse, there was nothing WRONG with her expanding her talents. And if she managed to look like a brave young woman while protecting Pern, well... why not? There was certainly nothing WRONG with more people knowing her name and associating her with hard work and a dragon.
Moved by his support, she accepted the dragonrider’s offer. Once the party was over, they’d head back to their home and pack. Weyr life was… different from what she was used to. It wasn’t nearly as refined but it wasn’t unreasonable. It took some time to adjust, but she’d learn to mingle with all types of people, if given time.
However, there was one itching annoyance that left her...unhappy. The weyrleader was a greenrider who had some funny ideas about how the world worked. How they didn’t NEED Golds to keep the population up. As if they could simply subsist on greens and garnets alone! The idea! The nerve! Golds existed for a reason and just because ONE was particularly bad didn’t mean they didn’t have a purpose!
Well. Regardless of if she Impressed to anything or not. She’d keep that in mind.
No need to associate with people like that in any capacity.
And no need to not tell other about such ridiculous people ahead of time.
