BASICS

NAME: Logan
GENDER: Male
PRONOUNS: he/him/his
ORIENTATION: Who's askin'?

BIRTHDATE: Autumn 2717
AGE: 54 as of 2771
LOCATION: Fort Weyr
OCCUPATION: Wherhandler
WING: Dawn Squad

APPEARANCE
EYES: Brown
HAIR: Brown going to grey
HEIGHT AND BUILD: 5'3", solid
PLAY-BY: Danny Trejo
FULL APPEARANCE:

If life is short and brutish, then Logan is the perfect analogy. Topping out at 5'3" he doesn't bother with built-up heels or standing straight - he slouches instead, making him one of the shorter men of Fort.

Most of the time, Logan tends to bristle. Either one of his ancestors was part-Canine, or he's well on the way to becoming an ambulatory rug. Adding to the part-Canine impression is the set of larger than average canine teeth nature has given him - not beyond the bounds of the human norm, but definitely towards the edge of those bounds.

Mostly, though, the man is solid muscle over heavy bone, with not an ounce of fat on him. By the look of it, he'd only have to walk up to it and push to fell one of the trees in the mountains, and a few of the Hold's denizens learned the hard way that he really is strong enough to pick them up and throw them several feet. On the other hand, when fights need breaking up or drunks need moving, Logan's presence is sought-after and even welcomed.

PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:

Logan's attitude to life can be summed up as 'The bigger they are, the harder they fall'. He's a fighter, he's tough, and he's self-confident enough that attempts to intimidate him usually leave him either laughing or very, very angry. He's not afraid of a good fight, he's not afraid of getting hurt, and he's very definitely not afraid of anyone or anything else, for that matter.

Logan doesn't seem to have much of a sense of humour, but buried somewhere underneath all the hair and the muscle and pricky irritability is a heart. He's at his most ferocious when protecting something or someone, and he clings to his honour as though it were his last proof of humanity. He's a man who's seen more than anyone should ever have to, and sometimes - just occasionally - it shows. Logask is a steadying influence, and the brown wher's warm helpfulness has blossomed and grown - something it wouldn't have been able to do if Logan's bite really were as bad as his bark. Those who've known Logan for a while say that he's mellowed some under the wher's influence, although if that's mellow then Faranth alone knows what he used to be like.

Logan still likes violence, though. It's just that Logask is a better judge of when to use violence, and Logan's learned and accepted that.

HISTORY
FAMILY: Parents: Lorrigal (Guard Captain) and Tegaran (Wherhandler), both deceased.
Siblings: Undefined
Children: Two, undefined
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: Wife Donarra, deceased several turns ago
BIRTHPLACE: Fort Hold
HISTORY:

Born at Fort Hold to Guard Sergeant Lorrigal and Bluehandler Tegaran, Logan was just another one among several siblings. He inherited his father's build and his Minecraft Master grandfather's height, much to his disgust - but after he joined the Guard and started banging heads together for a living people stopped calling him 'Anklebiter'. The fact that a few people wound up at the Healer Hall with bitemarks on their ankles might have helped with that one, though.

After he was among the force that saved a Fort Cothold from a daring dawn raid by bandits, Guardsman Logan found himself a bride in the person of the Cotholder's daughter, Donarra. Defying her father's wishes she left with the young man who'd caught her eye, and the pair settled down together.

In time Logan's mother passed away. Her wher, Tegarask, was presented with the surviving children; he chose Logan and became Telosk. Telosk had come out of the shell in front of Logan's great-grandmother, then a Minecraft Apprentice, and was more than eighty Turns old. Telosk taught Logan how to look after him, and Donarra - now a midwife - was delighted with their new quarters.

Time went by. Logan was promoted, with Telosk at his side; Donarra became respected for her skills, and was even gifted a firelizard egg so that she could call to the Healer Hall for help if she needed it. With Logan on shifts and Donarra on call they didn't see as much of each other as they'd have liked, but the family was close. But all good things must come to an end. More than a hundred Turns old, blue Telosk was killed by a young bronze during one of the last raids of the wars. Two Turns after that, Donarra died in childbirth despite the best the Healers could do, her firelizard vanishing to join the wild fairs two moments later. Logan looked after the children as best he could until they were safely fostered out, then took to the wineskin.

Three Turns passed in a haze, with Logan doing his level best to be clean and sober on duty, but not entirely successful. He'd done his best to be a good father, but with the children gone to make lives of their own he didn't have anyone to be respectable for. He'd mostly just tried to stay out of the way of people, and had quite a bit of success at that, as surly, aggressive and easily-angered, he wasn't really someone most people wanted to spend time with.

He'd had so much promise once, enough that his commander suggested that a young Wher would be good for him, pull him out of the hole he was in, but no-one suggested that to Logan himself. On duty when the Golden Ghost delivered her eggs, and there to make sure she had safe passage back out of the Hold, he did manage to catch someone else's eye, and Lady Ellaren made him take the last of those fateful eggs. The happy little brown who hatched into his hands took Logan's heart and patched it up, and Logan and Logask became a force to be reckoned with. After a, er, disagreement with the Hold's Wherlingmaster about training and the hours during which it should take place, and the amount of respect due to senior people Logan thought were sharding idiots, the pair requested a transfer up to Fort Weyr, where Logan started teaching Candidates and Weyrlings the rudiments of fighting, and where he and Logask worked on a few more delicate matters than anyone would have thought they should be allowed near.

The efforts to strike back against the insanities of Lord Evander led to Logan and Logask quietly disappearing from the Weyr, after which the campaign was stepped up to new heights. Rumours of a brown wher being involved were just that, as were rumours that Logan had been seen in one or two friendly cotholds around Fort. In the meantime, someone - or several someones - were waging a quiet effort to make Evander seem incompetent and unfit to Hold, but notably without any human or wher injuries among those who weren't fighting for Evander.

It worked.

And when it was all over, Logan and Logask didn't return to the Weyr. After due consideration they stayed out with the Cotholds, taking up a regular round of friendly places and friendly faces, with Logan and Logask doing odd jobs, hiring on for a job and departing, and stepping in where needed. And so the turns passed, and Logan and Logask grew closer than ever in Fort Hold's general orbit. But people change, positions change, and the Wherhandlers getting kicked out of Fort Hold meant that Logan fell out with the Hold in turn. He vanished deeper into the hinterlands with Logask, only dropping in on the friendly cotholds the pair knew so well when they were running short of supplies.

But all things come to an end, and the quiet time had to end too. Even Logan wants human company every now and again, and he's been missing food that someone else cooked, the comforts of hot baths, and the way his bones didn't ache quite so much back when he was younger - and that's even without Logask's gregarious nature and general warmth. So now, with winter starting to extend its icy claws again, it's time for Logan and Logask to return to civilisation, and make the run up to the Weyr to find out whether they've room for an aging guardpair.

LOGASK
Image

BASICS

NAME: Logask
BIRTHDATE Winter 2760
AGE: 11 as of 2771

APPEARANCE
LENGTH: 14.75 ft
HEIGHT: 4.75 ft
COLOR: Brown
HEX CODE: #654321
FULL APPEARANCE:

This brown wher is a stocky example of his kind, grown into broad-shouldered solidity thanks to hard work and exercise. He's short, though, very short for a brown, and a mostly-plain shade of brown except for his markings - though that brown darkens on his feet, partway down his tail and on the extended fingers and sails of his little wher wings.

While he has bands about his lower wing joints and his lower back legs, and an odd X on the inside of each foreleg's elbow, it's really the strange almost-mask on each side of his face that draws attention. From a thin line on the outsides of his headknobs it widens until it covers cheekbones and eyes, then narrows again until it vanishes on his bottom jaw, almost looking like extra fangs as it does so.

PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:

Logask is a family sort of wher, with a generous streak a mile wide, and he loves having happy people around and about - especially children. He's the sort of wher who'll visit the creche just because, and act as a climbing frame for the children - once they're over what he looks like, at least. Never afraid to put his strength to good use to help people out, he's sometimes the despair of the man who now has to wash the wher who went wading into the mud to rescue a cart.

A good counter to his handler's surly stubbornness, Logask's warmth and generosity have succeeded in pulling Logan back into the world. He doesn't dwell on the past - his handler does enough of that for both of them, in his opinion - but he's not as happy-go-lucky as he was in his youth. He's seen and done too much, and his entire life has been spent with someone who doesn't suffer fools at all. While it takes a lot to rile him, Logask's rage can run hot indeed, and some of his most treasured memories are of things he did to help bring down a man both he and his handler despised. But those are some of his most hated memories, as well. He'd far rather be the helpful and friendly one, not least because while Logan might pretend he doesn't like to be nice Logask knows that the grouchy guard has a heart big enough for both of them and secretly approves - and even if he'll never say so out loud, he's thought it plenty of times. Logask knows what he's capable of, and, just like his handler, he'd rather turn it to the good of the people around him. But sometimes they have to take the other course, and like Logan, Logask hates that sometimes these things are necessary.

They were some of the best there was at what they did, but what they did wasn't very nice.
