But without the need to chew Firestone, generations saw the Green population begin to clutch--and the population of dragons on Pern exploded. Although measures were eventually taken, the damage had been done. A plague ravaged the dragons weakened by Pern's inability to keep up with the food demand of so many apex predators. Many of them were lost, and numbers in each Weyr had been reduced to only a tiny fraction of their former size.
These losses proved a greater tax upon the population than expected, as the rate of fireballs had begun to increase above the skies of Pern. All the while as the riders struggled, between losing their numbers to sickness and trying to keep their own population up, the people of Pern continued to build, a growing animosity toward the riders and their technology, which had on more than one occasion failed to protect them.
In the midst of a plague winter, a rain of meteors surprised them all. And the end result was a planetwide tragedy.
Several Weyrs sank into the risen sea, and some others outright collapsed. In a desperate bid to keep dragons in the skies, the riders were finally forced to consolidate their number into a single Weyr--High Reaches, one of the only few which remained intact after the impact. Further still, hoping to bring their numbers back up, they finally gave the choice of clutching to the newest generation of greenrider Weyrlings.
Only one accepted the opportunity, and now, after numerous flights ending with no results, and losing their last Gold to the winter sickness, she finally sits upon the sands as Pern's final chance for dragonkind.
