FULL APPEARANCE: Barriss is distinguished more by her clothing and tattoos than her natural features, save perhaps for her large blue eyes. Even those are relatively ordinary, except for their contrast against her brown skin. She has regular features, with full, dark lips and a straight nose. Clothing-wise, she wears ankle-length black dresses with full-length sleeves and simple, sturdy boots. She always wears a matching black headscarf that completely covers her short black hair. Perhaps the most unusual thing about her is a series of diamond-shaped black tattoos across her nose and cheeks.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: Years of conditioning have taught Barriss to be a completely different person than she might have otherwise been. Outwardly, she appears calm, patient, thoughtful, and observant, the very model of a good little journeyman healer. If one scratches her surface, though, one finds a surprising strength of will hidden behind the mask. Her patience is persistent and unyielding, like the ceaseless beat of the tides. Sometimes, if she lets her guard down, it gives way to a fiery, impulsive streak that surprises even her in its intensity. This impulsivity led her to follow Ahsoka when the other woman fled Fort Hold, stopped her from staying behind and being the good little guard-healer her mother wanted.
Strangely for a healer, she prefers combat to diplomacy as a way of resolving conflict - or, as she likes to call her methods, "aggressive negotiations." She thinks that talking, rather than acting, is wasted time that could have been used to solve problems. She pushes herself to her limits in both combat and healing, trying to achieve the peak level that she can in each craft.
She isn't entirely lacking in the compassion necessary to be a healer, though it manifests in a different form than some might wish. While willing to focus on individuals in the field or infirmary, she generally acts for the greater good. People are necessary sacrifices, she thinks, and if the time comes where she is such a sacrifice, she will gladly lay down her life for what she believes will further Pern's advancement.
HISTORY
FAMILY: Luminara (foster mother/aunt, estranged)
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: Ahsoka
BIRTHPLACE: Fort Hold
HISTORY: Barriss's parents died when she was young, and she was taken in by her aunt Luminara, a healer who worked closely with the guards of Fort Hold. Luminara was a strict guardian, sparing with her praise and affection. From an early age, Barriss took an interest in combat perhaps more than healing. She continued to study under her aunt, but secretly enjoyed her training sessions with her guardling friends more. Her best friend was Ahsoka; the pair grew increasingly close over the Turns, training together and teaching each other what they knew.
Luminara accepted that her charge was more a fighter at heart with surprising grace, but continued to push her to be an excellent healer. She was distinctly unhappy when Ahsoka and Barriss became lovers near the end of Barriss's apprenticeship, viewing Ahsoka as a distraction. Nonetheless, when Barriss walked the tables at age 22, Luminara performed a risky tattooing procedure on her face to mark her gain in rank. It was a tradition among their family, and only done by and for the healers among them.
Shortly after Barriss walked the tables, when she was settling into her new role as journeyman healer and Ahsoka's girlfriend, Evander came to power. Barriss smelled a metaphorical rat immediately, but Ahsoka stubbornly maintained her loyalty to Fort's leadership. For the first time, the girls did not see eye to eye on an important issue, and there was friction between them, increased when Ahsoka was groomed for the elite Hold guard and rewarded with a garnet wher egg for her loyalty. Barriss was scared for her girlfriend, and more than a little jealous of her wher.
After Evander's assassination, Ahsoka fled, taking Barriss with her despite their frayed relationship. Over the sevendays spent in the wilderness, surviving off their training, they mended their relationship, and are closer than ever before. They arrived at High Reaches, a little leaner but otherwise alive and healthy, and settled in well. Ahsoka jumped at the chance to move to Semaca when the new southern Weyr was opened, and Barriss went with her willingly. She put herself forward as a dual candidate once she arrived, based on a small childhood dream of flying she'd always had.
UPDATES
- Winter 2765 - Barriss Impresses green Moorith at the Etudes hatching. She's thrilled, but it has created a rift between her and Ahsoka due to the 18-month separation and their now-opposing schedules.
- Spring? 2767 - Barriss transfers back to Semaca to reunite with Ahsoka and help the healer's wing.
- Spring 2770 - Barriss and Moorith go to help Minato and Charoth in a rubble collapse. However, the still-unstable construction shifts further, pinning Barriss beneath the rubble. Barriss's back is broken, badly enough that she'll never walk again (Permanent), and she suffers a number of other less catastrophic injuries.
