PLAY-BY: Artbreeder
FULL APPEARANCE: At 5'7 with a narrow, scrawny build, Kinen is not the most impressive of men. Although slightly on the shorter side, he doesn't seem bothered by his height, or really his appearance at all. Kinen wears baggy clothing that hides his form, but his sense of style is a bit... strange. He has no sense of what colors and patterns go together. Kinen tends to move with a carefree shuffle, a slight slouch, and no degree of rush.
His hair is a mousy brown, a bit messy and shaggy, and his eyes are a light blue. Although androgynous in appearance, his features make him look somewhat younger. He is pale and looks somewhat weak, though he is a little more sturdy than he appears.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: Kinen is, above all else, loyal. He will do anything to protect his friends, and despite this coming largely from his caring and genuine personality, it also stems from a hero complex. Kinen needs to save the day, no matter what that means. Even if it is to his detriment, inefficient, or even a downright awful idea, he will do whatever he can to "save" or defend others. He tends to butt in whenever he sees anyone being upset by another… even when he lacks context or a personal connection to the situation. It might be none of his business, but he needs to stand up for others! He needs to be heroic! His meddling makes things worse as often as they help, and his friends know him as a bit over protective. That said, he takes people at face value and is overly trusting. He is gullible and easy to lie to or manipulate. In some ways, Kinen is a bit simple. Intelligent, good with patterns, and resourceful… but his world is a simple one, and he doesn't need much to be happy.
Kinen tends to be oblivious, bordering on obtuse at times. He has no street smarts and is easy to take advantage of. Ask him about about knowledge, information, facts, and so on, and he'll do well… but don't expect him to have any common sense. He can be a bit lazy as well, preferring to do the bare minimum when it comes to drills and tasks. He is the sort to go with the flow, without any real aspirations, goals, or interests. Just a normal guy, no one who wants to be great or make anything of his life. He does ramble a lot, often losing his train of thought, and is generally a bit of a dork. As a sensitive, emotional sort, he tends to be rather empathetic.
HISTORY
FAMILY:
-Mother: Mayanen
-Father: Makir
-Cousin: Journeyman Harper Elana [+10, F]
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: (optional)
BIRTHPLACE: Small cothold under HRW
HISTORY: Mayanen, Kinen's mother, was born in a small cothold in High Reaches territory, near High Reaches hold but otherwise relatively out of the way. It was there that she was born, and as she'd often stubbornly decree, it would be there that she would die. She was very enamored with the tiny cothold, populated by family and family-friends alike, despite her fiery, adventurous attitude. One of the men at the cothold caught her eye, even moreso since his family was close to hers, and she happily married Makir. One child was born to them, who they named Kinen. As soon as Kinen could talk, he asserted his gender as male, and his parents took this in stride, supporting their son at every turn.
Growing up, Kinen had more cousins than he knew what to do with. First cousins, second cousins...third cousins? His family was the largest in the cothold, and seemed to grow every day. Although the hold was small and little happened, Kinen was happy and content...until the first day he saw a dragon.
At 12 turns of age, he went with his mother to High Reaches Hold to purchase some supplies. He'd been so excited, thrilled to go on this trip to see the larger hold. As his mother bartered with a trader, he wandered off and spotted a dragon. He had seen dragons in paintings and drawings before, even knew about them, but the bronze he saw...it was massive! And as he watched the creature take off into the air, well...he knew he wanted one of his own. When they got home, he told his parents that he was moving to the Weyr to Impress a dragon, because that's where people Impressed dragons, and surely, there was one just waiting for him.
He was immediately informed that he was far too young, and also, that he'd have to be searched. Kinen begged to move to the Weyr anyways, pleading for a chance to Impress anyways. His parents refused to let him, but when he turned 14, one of his cousins, a harper, wrote to inform them that she was moving to the Weyr, and would Kinen like to come, since he was always talking about dragons?
Naturally, Kinen jumped at the chance. After heartfelt farewells and promises to write, Kinen made his way towards High Reaches Weyr via caravan, where he met up with his cousin. A turn later, when he turned 15, he was allowed to become a candidate. Was he searched, let in, or was he just too annoying for them to say no? He didn't care to know the answer, and within 6 months of turning 15, Violath found him. She leapt into his arms, bowling him over, and ever since, life had not been the same.
Life at High Reaches post Golre was interesting. Everyone seemed to be so concerned about golds, but Kinen didn't really understand it. Sure, he could grasp the facts and the history, but it didn't concern the small-town-boy, and it was the past, wasn't it? Still, he navigated weyrlinghood as a greenrider as ease--flight was exhilarating!--and when he graduated, he took his place in the wings to fight thread.
Kinen made a few friends, lost a few friends, made up with a few friends, and so on, but he generally tried to avoid conflict. He continued to write to his family, and generally, he had a pleasant and uneventful childhood. Violath challenged him in some ways, but she was his closest friend, his biggest supporter, even as she pushed him to grow. While Kinen tried to coast through drills--and life--unnoticed, Violath was much more comfortable being seen.
