FULL APPEARANCE: [Major trait used for albinism.]
It is no surprise that the first thing most people notice about Elias is...well, he has albinism. His skin is incredibly pale with a pink tinge to it; his hair is white-blonde, showing little hint of any color. Almost as a stark contrast, his eyes are the tell-tale pinkish-purple that goes with many cases of albinism.
Aside from the most obvious of traits, he stands at an even six foot and has an almost lanky, fine form. It's clear he spends little time on hard physical labor, or at least he appears not to; his skin is unmarred by scars, smooth and clear, and ridiculously soft to the touch, not a callous to be found. His clothes are always well kept, his appearance neat and tidy and often looking on the more fashionable end. He keeps as much of his skin covered as possible at all times. His expression is usually one of worry or distraction.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: Elias is a chronically shy man and always has been. It is one of the biggest issues he struggles with: he often cannot bring himself to speak up for himself or others, and he struggles with making connections, let alone keeping them. He's not entirely a recluse, but the shyness keeps him quiet, even to the point of often mumbling when he speaks. Even if he is full of opinions--and he certainly is--he has trouble voicing them. Friendship is a long-away dream of his, and romance is practically forbidden due to his reluctance to just...speak up.
As a result of his condition and perhaps compounding his shyness, he is a chronically nocturnal creature. He prefers the night out of necessity, safe from the sun's harmful rays, but it does make friendship a little difficult outside of Wherhandlers and their charges. There is a certain appeal to the night for him as well, knowing people might focus less on his appearance--which they can't see as well--and more on who he is as a person. The night brings a little more confidence, but he still struggles to open up.
An avid reader, Elias has a love for knowledge and exploration, but most often through reading and lessons. He takes easily to scholarly exploits and enjoys living vicariously through others, since many adventures are beyond his reach. As soft as he is--both physically and emotionally--he finds it more satisfying to see excitement through another's eyes. As such, he loves to listen to the stories and experiences of others, and makes an excellent listener or shoulder to cry on.
Though he loves to hear these stories and learn from the experiences of others, Elias still longs for a place to belong. He's a bit of a lost soul, and often lurks around others in an attempt to find a place for himself. He likes to think he has good advice to offer when asked, but struggles to speak up without being approached first. He would be a good, steady friend, if he could ever get past his own weaknesses.
HISTORY
FAMILY: Unknown
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: None
BIRTHPLACE: Ista Weyr
HISTORY: Born, like many others, to a dragonrider and her weyrmate, Elias was just another child raised in the Weyr's creche.
Elias did not have the happiest childhood. He struggled often with health issues ranging from poor eyesight to a stark sensitivity to the sun. Due to his appearance, he quickly became a shy and quiet boy, avoiding the company of others so that he couldn't see the occasional surprised look or over-curious stares. It made him self conscious to the point of wanting to withdraw, even if he was never bullied or treated roughly, in large part thanks to the general way Weyrs work.
While he maintained a kind and curious personality through the struggles, he never was able to overcome the self consciousness born of his own insecurities. He was denied the opportunity to become a dragon candidate; someone with poor eyesight and a sensitivity to the sun would make a poor rider indeed. He threw himself into whatever studies he could, keeping to the indoors of the Weyr where he was safest from the sun. Being naturally nocturnal, it became easier to avoid people as he got older.
Fortunately, there were options for those who needed or wanted a more nocturnal schedule. He decided on wher candidacy in his early 20s, knowing it was one of his best options aside from general drudgery or a specified craft. He would have gone into weaving, or perhaps leatherworking, but candidacy seemed a better way to try to meet others and foster relationships, as a life of solitude didn't sound like a good way to live. Nocturnal crafting sounded...lonely. At least if he was granted a wher he would have a squad to connect with, at the very least.
He continued as such at Ista Weyr for a handful of turns, but with no success--either in friendship with people who had likely known him most of his life or in being given a wher of his own--he applied to transfer to another Weyr. High Reaches seemed the natural choice for its more Northerly location, where he hoped a new start in a new location could give him plenty of new opportunities.
