FULL APPEARANCE:
Dark of skin and hair and eye, this tall woman is solidly-built, with broad hips, square shoulders, and a square jaw. She never wears cosmetics and her hair is left to do its own thing as long as it stays out of her eyes, and she tends to wear trousers rather than skirts with a more masculine shirt under her bodice. Then again, her shoulders are broader than those of most women thanks to a life of hauling hides and then sacks of firestone, and she's muscular enough to need the room in which to move (while being large enough in the chest to truly need a bodice's support). Her hands are frequently a colour not related to the rest of her, and the waft of the tanning vats can never be entirely removed by bathing. She keeps herself as clean and neat as possible, given the circumstances, but she's a Tanner too, and that's frequently a messy, smelly job.
This woman's face is dotted with scars, pockmarks on cheeks and lips and chin and neck, those places where a dragonrider's helmet and goggles don't meet the high collar of a riding jacket. The scars are old, but the legacy of a faceful of almost-ash Thread will never completely fade.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
Blunt, forthright, and entirely willing to call a shovel a shovel, Cefyn takes no prisoners and doesn't suffer fools gladly. She's a fighting dragonrider with a fighting dragon, and before she ever became a Candidate she was a skilled craftswoman in her own right. Self-confident and solid, she's only cruel with extreme provocation; by nature she's warm and friendly, helpful, and forever pondering dyes, leathers, and just what colour and style of straps would look good with what colour hide. She's always happy to teach people who genuinely want to learn, and after nearly a decade as a dragonrider - and turns before that as a Journeyman Tanner - there's quite a lot she can teach.
That self-confidence of hers masks a yawning chasm of feelings of inadequacy, albeit a chasm that Sarutoth has done a great deal to fill in. The finding of the most efficient path is a thing that suits them both perfectly, and while she's fairly confident that she's a good tanner and a good dragonrider, she often gets lost in the plans or the possibilities while he pulls their focus back onto the work and getting it done in the best way possible to allow plenty of time for relaxation. He chose her because she'd no desire to lead anything either, because in Cefyn he'd always have a ready audience for his jokes, and because here was someone who needed to remember how to have a little fun every now and again.

SIGNIFICANT OTHER: None.
BIRTHPLACE: A small Beasthold near Ruatha
HISTORY:
After a mostly-happy childhood spent at a small Beasthold near Ruatha, Cefyn was sponsored to the Tanners by her Journeyman mother. She went and learned, and walked the tables at twenty; her first posting was to Fort Weyr, where she was Searched almost as soon as she arrived. Joining the ranks of the Candidates, Cefyn didn't want a gold dragon - if she was going to Impress, she wanted a fighter.
And Hatching after Hatching went by, and no dragon came. The Tanner worked at her Craft, producing hides and belts and boots and riding gear, and all the other things a Tanner produces, but most of her time was spent working with the massive quantities of leather needed for a dragon's fighting straps - after all, before the dragonriders can make the straps, there have to be soft, supple and well-tanned hides with which to start. She specialised in dyeing a whole batch in a single shade, with mottling or other effects when the rider wanted, and the Candidacy became almost an afterthought.
In the wake of Golre's death, Fort sent Candidates to High Reaches. Cefyn went with them, and Impressed soon after to a blue. Her bronze flit, Claude, adapted to life with a dragonet after a certain amount of sulking, but the Tanner was no longer able to practice her Craft, even after she graduated Weyrlinghood. Sarutoth's straps were always a credit to his rider (and perfect against his hide), but Cefyn - now C'fyn - no longer had the time or the freedom to work as she wanted to, to test new formulae or new techniques for more than just her own dragon. The pair were perfectly ordinary members of the fighting wings, albeit exceptionally turned-out, and that was that. But the joy of riding a fighting dragon can pall after a time, especially when it forces one away from one's true vocation, and C'fyn's life was somehow both full and yet incomplete.
But then Semaca happened, and C'fyn took interest for a little while before requesting a transfer. After all, here was a place where riders with Crafts could use their skills and knowledge without being informed that they couldn't take time away from being dragonriders to do it. And, apparently, they actively wanted Crafters on dragonback. So she and Sarutoth went for it. After all, what had they to lose, other than the unrelenting round of drill and exercise and fight and drill and...
