Relatively tall, Basilin is a good-looking man; dusty blond hair and green eyes, with a smile that lights his face when it appears, he has a rugged charm and a warm intelligence. His build is average, with muscles built by working rather than working out. Stronger than he looks, he exudes a generally calming air, except for when he himself gets upset.
Usually to be found in an off-white shirt of decent linen and trousers of dark green canvas reinforced with leather, his boots are sturdy and there's always a set of heavy work gloves in his belt if not on his hands. His favourite gather-day tunic is deep green with lines of bright buttons marching up the sides and middle, with lots of black braid to make it extra-fancy.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
Basilin is the sort of down-to-earth get-the-job-done type that some superiors adore and others despise. Leading from the front when he does lead something, he has a magnetic personality, which - given that he's a minecrafter - probably helps in his craft. Basilin is also fairly unflappable and reacts well to sudden changes in circumstance, which makes him a good man to have around in a crisis. Lucky in life but not in love, he tells it how it is and lives by his code, which includes being gentlemanly around the ladies and loyal to whoever's in charge of him - for a given value of loyalty. He's an independent thinker when he knows he's in the right, and won't hesitate to make someone look like a complete idiot if he thinks it's justified, especially if he doesn't like them very much.
Betrayed by some of the people he has been closest to, Basilin is scarred and bitter when no-one's watching. He doesn't trust easily and finds it very difficult to let people get close. However, despite his best intentions, Basilin's head can get turned by just about anyone in a skirt or otherwise female-presenting, and at that point all sense and all those hard lessons get forgotten.
Odalisk is the only one whose judgement he trusts when it comes to other people, and he relies heavily on the wher's knowledge and sense for people. The best way to get on Basilin's bad side is to insult his wher.
HISTORY
FAMILY: Bastard brother of Lord Dantryl of Lemos. Uncle to Kinestryl. A couple of children old enough to make their own ways in the world.
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: N/A
BIRTHPLACE: Lemos
HISTORY:
Basilin was born on the wrong side of the sheets, but acknowledged by his father. A child of the blood and yet not of the blood, he was raised serving the Lord Holder's legitimate children - a cushy number for a servant, but something that generated only bitterness in Basilin. When he turned out to have an aptitude for minecraft, discovered when he rescued his half-brother from a minor cave-in, he was sent to the Minecrafthall as an Apprentice, and there he stayed.
He did well as an Apprentice, impressing one Master in particular, and when he walked the tables he worked much more closely with that Master, learning to handle cave-ins and rescues with more aplomb. And so proceeded the next decade; working down t'pit as a day job, and being on call-out if someone had a bad day. When Master Odamar died his bronze wher, Odamsk, opted to go with the Journeyman the pair had worked with for so long, and Odamsk became Odalisk.
Life went on, and so did the mining and the rescues. His wife departed with the gold he'd been mining for months, leaving him with the children. He gave another woman everything he had, only for her husband to take the lot. He won wealth from the earth and lost it to treachery every time, and got a little more bitter each and every time it happened. But as he got older, Basilin's joints started aching, and life at Crom was nothing if not cold and damp. One of the Healers suggested transferring to somewhere rather warmer, and Basilin opted to go to Ista - where he promptly fell right out with the local Master Minecrafter when the woman insulted Odalisk and tried to send them into a coal mine full of gas. Still, Basilin's joints had stopped hurting, so Basilin and Odalisk reckoned they were on to something; they opted for Semaca, loaded themselves onto a ship, and departed.
Goodness knows what Semaca holds for them - but they've heard the Weyr needs expanding underground, and where there's digging to be done it's best to have a Miner, and a Miner who's good with cave-ins is always welcome wherever he goes, if digging is being done. And, if someone's desperate for their help elsewhere, they can always send a dragon.
