FULL APPEARANCE:
Edsel has a thin and lanky appearance and will often try to cover his body in long sleeved clothes and long pants. He will even, at times, wear multiple layers of clothes to hide his body and make himself appear less thin. He is heterochromic, with one eye being blue and the other being green. Along with this, he has blond hair that goes down to his neck. He will also, most of the time, have a scarf around his neck, regardless of the weather.

Edsel hates being viewed negatively. He believes he has to maintain a certain appearance and can't ever appear weak in the eyes of others. Because of this, he tends to be cold to most people. He doesn't want them to get close and suddenly hate him when they realize he's different than he appears to be. He's honestly worried people won't like him if he doesn't appear like the standards for being a dragonrider, a Holder, or rather, his father's standards. This includes him hiding his true sexuality and pretending to be straight. He will sometimes even lie if he thinks telling the truth will harm how people view him as. Along with this, he tends to be overdramatic and can view even the smallest things as the end of the world.
However, Edsel tends to warm up to those who spend extended time speaking to him. He honestly feels lonely at times and really wants to make friends. He is really passionate to his friends' ideas and plans and will often support them if he is able to. He is also a great listener, always willing to lend a ear to someone who needs to vent. He is even willing to help those with chores, even if he has different chores than them. He really enjoys hearing stories and will often sneak away from others to listen to harpers.

Edsel really doesn't like to talk about his childhood, for one main reason.
His father.
Edsel was born near the end of the Interval War, being at the age of three when it ended. His older brother, Jacek, was eight when the war ended and would tell him stories of what he heard from harpers about the war.. His father was a harsh man who held him up to high standards, with his mother being compliant to him. He wanted Edsel to be just like him. These feelings were also shared towards Edsel's older brother, Jacek. Their father expected both of them to be the traditional Hold Man, just like him, and told them he would not settle for anything less than that. He expected them to marry the right woman and have several children. While Edsel listened to his father a lot and often obeyed him, he didn't agree with that. He wanted to become a harper. He loved listening to the stories harpers told in his youth and wanted to leave that impression for a child. However, his father informed him that he would likely be unable to become a harper. There were limited opportunities for him to find a mentor, especially due to the location of the hold. To hear those words shattered Edsel's heart, looking horrified at his father.
Another view that his father had was that men should never be with other men, and the same being true to women. Jacek was quick to argue with his father, asking what if either of them preferred men and didn't want to marry a woman. Their father was quick to tell him that he would disown them in an instant if they even appeared to like men. Jacek was enraged at that, but he hid his anger as best as he could.
Meanwhile, Edsel was horrified, as he had a small crush on a fellow boy he would play with. Did that mean his father would disown him if he found out? Due to this, Edsel refused to let his father see the true side.. or rather, anyone. He wouldn't even show it to his brother, as he did not want to be judged and hated for it. However, Jacek was braver than Edsel thought. He had to admit he was envious that Jacek, at the age of fifteen, had been searched and ended up going to another weyr when Edsel was ten. His father was extremely proud and told him that he was going to be a rider.

Jacek got to be himself, he thought angrily.
However, he didn't know Jacek had a plan. He lived ten years in the hold, being incredibly jealous of his brother. He continued to follow what his father wanted him to do, hiding his identity and his preference towards men. However, when Edsel was eighteen turns old, a blond searchrider had arrived at the hold and seemed to seek him out. Edsel couldn't deny who it was, excited to see it was his older brother. Along with that, Jacek had a beautiful garnet dragon, who seemed to greet Edsel like he was her child. He informed him that he had a new home now, in High Reaches Weyr, and he wanted to bring his brother with him- as a candidate.
Just after the Threadfall of Early Spring 2771, Edsel arrived in High Reaches with his older brother. As worried as he was, he felt he could trust his older brother.
