FULL APPEARANCE: Adair is a lady with all the right curves in all the right places. For a woman in her forties, she doesn't look very old at all. She is keen to keep herself looking voluptuous and dashing no matter the occasion. There's no excuse to let one's physical appearance languish due to current events and duties! Pale, sun-bleached hair hangs wildly down to the middle of her back, curled and wavy. Icy blue eyes are the perfect contrast to delicately pale and smooth skin. She sports a few beauty marks here and there, in particular a mole on her left collarbone and a strawberry where her neck meets her back. Her entire wardrobe consists of tasteful attire, meant to compliment her physical visage and draw attention away from imperfections like crow's feet and slightly baggy eyes.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: Adair is vain in the greatest sense. Your first impression of her might be a fluffy, bouncy purse dog who may be outwardly very friendly but will turn her nose up at biscuits that aren't gourmet. She is chatty to the point that it might as well be a torture device, constantly gloating about past endeavors (and past bedfellows). She's "never fully dressed without a smile" and will wear one exquisitely as she talks down to you like you are the lowest life form on Pern. Adair can be quite the charmer and seems to know just what to say (or who to, ahem ... you know) to earn a few favors or get out of duties.
Interestingly, her best friends are the ones who are down to Pern with her - often blunt and rude right back at her. Adair values relations with those who don't conceal their true intentions or personalities with her. The truth is, Adair has been burned one too many times in the past. Secretly she is lonely, vying for some kind of meaningful connection. She wants to be loved, fully and truly. But the idea of romance is almost acid to her, and Adair will quickly thrust a barrier between her and anybody getting a little too close. Her fiery tongue is just as much a shield as it is a weapon.
HISTORY
FAMILY:
Mother [N/A]
Father [N/A]
Son [18]
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: None
BIRTHPLACE: Fort Hold
HISTORY: TW: Child neglect, domestic abuse. The product of a one-night stand between her mother and a man she'd just met, Adair was not planned on nor wanted. Though her mother did indeed take care of her, it was always 'just enough' to keep her alive. The Interval War was at its height during this time. Adair had only the basic knowledge about the Weyrs and their dragons and whers. Her mother was constantly on the move, dragging Adair in tow, from one Hold to the next cothold and doing the bare minimum to care for her child. Her mother would jump from man to man, using physical favors and womanly wiles to get what she wanted - be it fine goods or a caravan ride to the next civilization. There was no real reason for any of this nomadic behavior - it was, apparently, simply part of her nature. Emotional wellness wasn't a high priority and Adair received little to no affection from her birthgiver. Though the holderfolk would step in to assist and tend to the youngling, it wasn't until Adair was 5 that she was officially taken in by a family in Telgar. Her mother showed no emotion at the departure and left quietly in the middle of the night without saying goodbye.
Her newfound family treated her with as much love and adoration that she could handle, acting as a buffer against learned behaviors. But her psyche had already been molded at a young age. When she was 16, Adair ran away with the insatiable need to fill a void that developed within her. Much like her parent, Adair ventured from one location to the next - never really staying long enough to form close bonds with anybody. Each mile further from her adoptive home fed her horrible longing. Though she strongly desired to come back to the people who loved her, Adair could never really bring herself to commit to the thought. At 18 she began to use her body as a means to get what she wanted - be it through flirtatious enchantment or something more. Adair never stuck with a partner long enough to consider them something more than a temporary fling and those that did had the tendency to be heavy handed. She was drawn to the dangerous, gruff types. Those same types were more than willing to put hands on her.
And then there was Thread. The signs of its impending arrival showed the following Turn, but it wasn't until Adair actually witnessed its falling in 2758 that she became aware of its dangers. She sought permanent shelter within the confines of Fort Weyr in the same turn. Her promiscuous lifestyle was ever-present and she fell pregnant with a dragonrider's spawn at the age of 22. There were, at least, some alarm bells ringing in her head as a reminder of her own childhood. Adair knew she would not be a fit mother had the good sense to surrender her son to the Weyr's creche where he would prosper under the care of their caretakers and milkmothers.
At 24, Adair experienced the luck of being at exactly the right place at precisely the right time. She hadn't considered herself to be Candidate material. Defying her own inner dialogue, Adair decided to press for the title before the next Hatching. After all, she would age out of the chance to do so come winter, why not take a crack at it? A green hatchling found her among the stands, declaring Adair as her own. Little Alsetth was from Imorith's final clutch - for the gold would perish the following turn due to poisoning. Losing herself in those rainbow eyes, Adair suddenly found herself with the sensation of being grounded. Inexplicably, Fort Weyr was her forever home. Alsetth was her forever Bonded. And there was a rare emotion budding in her gut - true happiness.
Such giddiness was short-lived. Golre's forces attacked Fort Weyr not long before the final eggshell cracked once ... and again the following season, although that assault led to the tyrant's demise. With the fogginess of hazy longing beginning to clear from Adair's mind due to Alsetth's presence, she began educating herself on the Weyrs' histories and took pity on those women who lived at High Reaches Weyr when Golre reigned. Fort Weyr sent some of its own to the ruined Weyr in an effort to rebuild it. Something inside Adair told her that that would be her future: to do some good. For once.
Surviving plague, Adair and Alsetth did not make the transfer request until 2767. The threats from Benden and Tuckal's attempted kidnapping birthed a kind of fear in Adair that made her want to leave Fort in a hurry. She joined the Raindance Wing of High Reaches Weyr. A fire-lizard egg purchased from a merchant gifted her with the little garnet she named Glitz, due to her very lavish nature.
Adair has remained there since, bearing witness to the tensions between Fort and High Reaches and speaking out with others in hopes that peace could be found. She had no wish to be part of a feud that involved the place where her darling green ... and her son ... was born. Adair had several turns to consider what she had done to her child - how she left him behind so suddenly in a way that was no better than her own mother. She penned to him multiple times, using Glitz as the messenger. But its hard to write somebody when you don't even know their name ... He would be a young adult by now, and that's about all she knows. Shards, she wasn't even sure if he was still at Fort Weyr. Or alive.
One winter, when Thread fails because of the cold, Adair will go there to seek him out.
One winter ...
