I have made a great mistake, pray the Lord my soul to take
The ghost of who I used to be, I can feel them come for me
It looks as though they're here to stay, I'm just trying to find my way

FULL APPEARANCE: On the taller side of average, Nyrida boasts an athletic build with lean, compact muscle. She prefers to wear leathers and furs, mostly made by her own hand, and has a tendency towards warm, practical clothing. She prefers neutral colors, such as brown or gray, but does have a love for accents of red. By her side, she wears a belt knife, but she is not capable of wielding it well. Her brown hair is nearly black, worn in a long, somewhat messy style with smaller braids in it. Nyrida's facial features are sharp, almost wild. She is not pretty, but certainly has a unique, memorable appearance, startling, even fearsome or predatory. Her nose is sharp and slender, her lips thin, her cheekbones prominent. Despite her tendency towards a neutral affect, the downward arch of her thick eyebrows give her an annoyed look. Her face, slightly gaunt in appearance, boasts a sharp jawline. She holds herself with perfect posture, elegant, regal, and deliberate, without any showing imperfections.
An accident left Nyrida with the area around her eye shredded. Luckily, the area was intact enough, but the eye beneath the lid is hardly so. Scarring covers the eye.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: tw: some mental illness/negative self-talk
knowledgeable, loyal, independent, resilient, determined, protective, caring; morose, serious, awkward, cynical, sarcastic, self-sacrificing, vengeful
a distant, overly formal young woman who puts up barriers of both unoffensive politeness and dry sarcasm to mask her protective, caring nature and the deep sadness and sense of loss she feels within.
Nyrida is a nurturing sort, with a protective streak that borders on motherly at best and overbearing at worst. She sees her own selfless acts and self-sacrifice as necessary, a bit of a self-made martyr. She must suffer so that others can be happy, and if that means she must be lonely, than so be it. She has made mistakes in the past, which she dwells on, and keenly feels the need to somehow make up for them. Still, she is loyal and steadfast to those who wish to spend time with her. Her protection extends to those she doesn't know, and she cares deeply for the wellbeing of strangers. While her actions are kind and generous, she can come across as critical or nagging. She tries very hard to handle delicate situations, but due to her awkward nature, she can be unintentionally harsh and judgmental. She tries to be tactful, and apologizes for her sharp tongue frequently, but can be a bit rude--albeit in a well-spoken, quasi-polite way.
For all the kindness in her heart, she does not trust easily. Her view on human nature, both her own and that of others, is quite negative. A bitter pessimist, she always sees the worst in a situation, in others, in herself. She is down on herself, beating herself up and feeling guilty over minor things. She believes she is not a good person, and that she has caused misfortune to others. She doubts herself greatly, questioning herself and living in the regrets of the past, too focused on that to leave the past in the past. While she moves forward, she will forever, keep one foot in the past, and will not let it go. She is a bit morose, and can be a bit of a drag to be around at times. Overly serious, and a bit dramatically so, she struggles to express genuine emotion. Distant and formal, she nonetheless shows glimpses of snarkiness, affection, and emotion. Her insults are usually backhanded and clever, her sarcasm scathing but not quite cruel. The more comfortable she is with someone, the more she will tease them, though if they take it seriously, she will apologize profusely.
Even those who strive for goodness have their shortcomings. She is surprisingly petty, and often motivated by spite. Nyrida has a taste for vengeance. She will hold a grudge forever, and her resentment may boil over into (usually petty forms of) revenge, if it goes far enough. She is capable of intense love; she is also capable of intense hate. Both require quite a lot of effort to get to, but they remain there, nonetheless. Despite being strongly motivated by both spite and vengeance, she has one thing that motivates her beyond all else: seeking knowledge. She wants to know at least a little about everything, especially dragonkin, who she is exceptionally fascinated with. She loves reading, and can often be found pouring over records for fun. Even if she doesn’t enjoy something, she remains hardworking, steadfast, and persistent.
Surprisingly, Nyrida has a playful side, but she hides it well. Usually, she is proper, formal, even stiff--trying to be unoffensive and polite, despite her sharp tongue. She is quiet, constantly trying to control herself and preferring to listen. She struggles to relate to others, and is difficult to relate to. Despite her darker outlook, she is surprisingly passionate, though a better word might be intense. Nyrida seems strong and independent. If nothing else, she is determined to survive, fiercely clinging to what she needs and wants. Despite the losses she's experienced, she's determined to move forward, and remains resilient. Assertive and capable, Nyrida will often stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. While willing to sacrifice some things for others, she will not let anything be taken from her. Despite this, she feels more vulnerable than she seems. Her past haunts her, and she feels lonely and isolated as a result of it, not to mention guilty. Sometimes her sense of humor manifests in self-deprecatory comments. She often gets a bit broody and pensive about her life. Woe is Nyrida.
HISTORY

-Mother: Neryna [Deceased]
-Stepmother: Chiytora
-Father: Adilaen
--Half-sisters (twins, -5): Adiyta and Torydiae
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: None
BIRTHPLACE: Small cothold under HR
HISTORY: tw: injury/disability; death/loss; self-criticism/mild mental illness
Born Nyridanae, Nyrida was the first and only child of Neryna and Adilaen, born in a small cothold, largely of relatives--distant and otherwise. Her mother, Neryna, passed away in childbirth, and her father, Adilaen, found a second wife when Nyridanae was four. She never knew her mother, so she never mourned her properly, nor did she feel any particular need to. She often remembers her mother with respect, but without strong emotion. She is attached to those she considers her true family--her father, half-sisters, and stepmother--but her distance puts a damper on those relationships. Nyridanae was often lost in the chaos. A quieter child, she blended in; many other children lived in their cothold, and Anae was often left behind or forgotten. She struggled with feeling lonely and isolated for as long as she could recall, a feeling that, surprisingly, grew worse when her half-sisters graced the world.
While her isolation and loneliness were mostly self-imposed, a side effect of her quiet, withdrawn personality, the twins were the opposite. Their personalities were bright and charismatic, so they were well-loved. Of course, her family loved her, but the twins were universally adored by those of the cothold. Although a bit distant from her family, Nyrida still cared for them. Her father often traveled to a nearby hold for work, as he was a crafter who simply didn't want to leave his family. A skilled tanner, he often bonded with Nyrida by teaching her the craft. She excelled in her new skill, but would never formally enter the craft, despite her exposure during childhood and her love for her father.
While it was rare for travelers to come so far north, and rarer still for them to stop by such a small cothold, a family visited when Nyrida was 16 that was especially notable. Their daughter, Serytsa, caught Nyrida’s eye--and Nyrida caught hers, in turn. Serytsa’s parents were thrilled to see their quiet, shy, and rather sickly daughter become so close to someone, and as a result, the family resolved to spend a few turns at the cothold, possibly indefinitely. Serytsa and Nyrida formed a relationship by seventeen, falling in love with each other. With Serytsa, Nyrida's more curious and adventurous side came out, no matter how briefly. They often went out, exploring and going where maybe they shouldn't. It was often Nyrida's idea, but she loved the way it lit up Serytsa's face. One day, shortly after turning 18, Nyrida led Serytsa, and they adventured a bit too far from home, and ran into a wild wher. The green was protecting her nearby clutch, so she lashed out at the two instinctively. A gash to Nyrida's face, and a larger one to Serytsa's chest, before the wher fled.
Nyrida managed to bring Serytsa back to the hold, but the healer could not do much. The girl was sickly, and the healer arrived from the nearby major hold too slowly. By the time he arrived, Serytsa's fate was sealed; she had lost too much blood, and he could not do much to help her. After bringing Serytsa back, Nyrida passed out, and the healer treated her, instead of Serytsa, who was already good as lost. When Nyrida came to, they delivered the news; her girlfriend had passed. Nyrida, naturally, blamed herself, and considers herself a terrible person due to her carelessness. She was ashamed of it, believing that she had committed some awful atrocity. Dramatic and shameful, she ran away from home within months of the incident, after refusing to talk to anyone. She has lost contact with her family as a result, and views the entire thing as her leaving her past behind. After living on her own for about a month or two, at 19, she found herself at High Reaches Weyr.
She'd never thought much on politics--it was all to big, too distant from her. It hadn't been relevant to life at the cothold. She held no opinions on High Reaches, though upon learning about it, she admired its policies and structure. Candidacy was offered to her. She took several months to a turn to mull it over, putting her other skills to use in the meantime. Nornth's clutch, with the disasters before and after it, had recently hatched; news traveled fast, and Nyrida was uncertain about if riding a dragon was her calling. Over the time she worked as a crafter at the Weyr, she grew more and more fascinated with dragons. While loyal to High Reaches, she transferred to each hatching, once she had made her decision to accept the search. She knew in her heart that she would eventually return, no matter where she Impressed, but she would hardly limit herself.
She has yet to reunite with her family, properly, and she struggles to socialize, but that is not to say she's alone. In the middle of 2769, she found a firelizard egg on the shore, and Impressed to Envy.
