FULL APPEARANCE: Janzem is a little taller than average for a Pernese man, but incredibly gangly in his build, seeming to be all arms and legs. Yet despite this, he's remarkably agile, and his long fingers have a light, deft touch. He has large blue eyes and incredibly ginger hair, with a well-trimmed beard. With his light skin, it's fortunate that he's a nocturnal wherhandler, because in Semaca's climate, he would burn bright red in a matter of minutes. Janzem wears primarily neutral colours, browns, creams and not-too-bright greens; enough to express a bit of his personal tastes, but without standing out too much.

PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: The quickest and simplest way of describing Janzem's personality is 'rogue with a heart of gold'. Deep down - really, really deep down - he's got a decent streak that will come out in moments of surprising tenderness and compassion. The whim will strike him and he'll do something nice. And maybe those whims come a little more often since Impressing Zesk, because she's been a good influence on him, encouraging his better side and calling him out on it when he's really in the wrong. But to a large extent, Janzem is simply selfish, and all Zesk has achieved is curbing his worst impulses.

Janzem is rather cheeky, often teasing his equals and talking back to his superiors whenever he thinks he can get away with it, although he can put on a show of being respectful when it's in his own best interests to do so. But he's an unrepentant smart-arse who's probably too clever for his own good. Oh, and don't play games of chance with him: he absolutely will cheat. And will then lie about it when confronted. He's talented at sleight of hand, and while he'll mostly use this skill to entertain people with cheap parlour tricks, he's not above using it for his own benefit too. He'll take bets on hatchings and skim some of the marks for himself. Of course, he knows he can't get away with thievery in the Weyr, but he'll pick a pocket as a trick - usually giving the item back straight away - just to keep his skills sharp now that he's no longer travelling.

Well, and he kind of likes showing off. It's a good way of breaking the ice and keeping the mood light. While he's not the most outgoing of guys, he's not shy either; he's friendly and will engage in conversation, although not necessarily being particularly honest. Most of his stories are not actually true, although some of them are entertaining regardless. But once he considers someone a friend, he's quite happy to spend time with them, preferably having a good time, and maybe he'll show some of those nicer traits that he keeps so well hidden. If he really likes someone, he might even teach them some of those "useful" life skills.

It's really hard to see what Zesk sees in Janzem, and one might also imagine that he wouldn't much care for her either. It's true they clash sometimes, when Janzem is getting up to something that Zesk disapproves of, and he responds with a cheeky remark about Zesk looking like a wrinkled old glove. But ultimately they share the same sassiness and cleverness, and Janzem appreciates her keeping him on a slightly straighter path far more than he'd care to admit. Ultimately, they're good friends, and there are genuine moments of tenderness between them.

HISTORY: Janzem was born in the back of a caravan, his mother labouring while the trading caravan hurried to escape a sudden spring storm. And that was basically the entirety of his childhood, spending most of each Turn travelling from Hold to Hold in a convoy of wagons. He played with the children of other traders, and learned in an improvised manner from the adults. A lot of the traditional lessons taught by Harpers were simply skipped over, and instead Janzem picked up quite a lot of bad habits and dirty tricks. It was easy to get away with a little petty theft when the caravan was always on the move and very few people suspected the sweet little kid with big, innocent eyes.

Of course, as he got older, it got a lot harder to avoid unwanted attention. He got caught several times, which led to some very awkward conversations with the trading caravan, who wanted to maintain access to the Holds in question. It was the older members, including his parents, who impressed on him the importance of behaving himself so the caravan wasn't banned from entering the Holds on their trading route. But mostly what Janzem learned was that he needed to be more sneaky about it, more careful not to get caught. So he learned to cheat at games of chance and run impromptu betting on runnerbeast races, far less noticeable ways of earning a few extra marks without getting too many angry people punching or slapping him.

It was a balancing act, one he struggled with on a regular basis, and over the Turns, Janzem earned himself a bit of a reputation. So when he heard that a new Weyr was being founded in the south, he... found his way there. Called in a favour with a dragonrider who "owed" him a lot of marks from certain "definitely not rigged" dragon poker games: if the rider transported him to the newly founded Semaca Weyr, Janzem would consider the debt paid. Unsurprisingly, the man went for it.

Semaca was a whole new place, one where nobody really knew him, and so a whole new chance to turn over a new leaf-- uh... to try harder to not get caught. Almost on a whim, he signed up to be a wher candidate. It was something he'd considered for a while, as there had been a few whers with the caravan, but the time had never quite seemed right. Amazingly, he Impressed at the very first wher hatching at Semaca, to one of a pair of twin greens who hatched from the same egg. The green called herself Zesk, and it was the start of a beautiful friendship.

For the first time in Janzem's life, he was not only living in one place, where he couldn't simply walk away from the consequences of his actions, but he had someone who was more than willing to call him out on his behaviour. So he actually had to be good...ish. Not too naughty, anyway. Fortunately, there were lots of other ways to keep himself busy in Semaca, because building a new Weyr required a lot of work. The spirit of adventure and new beginnings suited Janzem well.

When storms flooded the Weyr, some people suggested asking the north for help, but Janzem wasn't one of them. He'd grown up on the road, taught from a young age how to look after himself, and just asking for help because of a little water - okay, a lot of water - just felt like giving up. So he pitched in and helped with the rebuilding.

He was eager to establish relations with the trading ship when it arrived, and was undaunted when they turned out to be pirates. Just because they didn't live within the confines of the law didn't mean they were bad people, as long as one was sensible enough to keep an eye on one's marks. Janzem was even happy to see them set up their own Hold nearby, and was welcoming of their presence in Semaca. They were kind of kindred spirits, after all.

FULL APPEARANCE: Just as wrinkly as her sister, Zesk has a much kinder face and doesn't look quite as grumpy, even if she looks kinda like a pile of clothes someone dropped on the floor. She has a calm gait and almost can manage a toothy wher smile. She seems to have the opposite color scheme as her sister, with her main body a brighter, springy green. She revels in it a little bit. Her wings and her forepaws are that darker evergreen, with the same ring on her chest. There is the same minty green over her eyes and chest, and on her hips. The darker evergreen goes in a solid line down the top of her tail, ending right before the tailfork.

PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: Zesk is a kind, intelligent wher who has visions to see the world to a better place. She is full of spirit and isn't afraid to be herself; she is quite fond of sassing and will correct anyone who she thinks is in the wrong. She has a strong sense of justice and is extremely clever; as such, she will come up with clever and ingenious ways to get back at people without being obvious about it. She has little tolerance for arrogance and foolishness, preferring people who are competent and useful. She will even go out of her way to help find where that special talent lies in others, taking the time to get to know them and understand them.

She is a very patient and loving wher, and a lot of her time goes into her friends and family. She wants to make sure they are uplifted and supported, and she does everything in her power to help them. She speaks soft words and goes out of her way to nurture those she can, but she is not afraid to correct either. If anything threatens to hurt those she tucks under her care, she will stop at nothing until they are safe and the offender has been chased off. Zesk is extremely intelligent and well suited for helping teach others, as she picks up skills quickly and is very good at teaching them to anyone. She has a fondness for her shell-twin, but is also irritated by her.

Voice: Zesk's voice is soothing but firm, with a soft feminine ring to it.

FULL APPEARANCE: Copper is, as her name suggests, mostly a rich, coppery gold in colour, with lighter yellow-gold paws, wing tips, tail tip, and headknobs. She is a rather large and chunky firelizard, with a stocky body and short, broad wings.

PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: Rough, boisterous, and noisy, Copper is the kind of firelizard that will sit on Janzem's shoulder and squawk loudly just to hear the sound of her own voice. She loves to play, though she's big and strong enough that she'll tend to just bowl other firelizards out of the sky, not through malice or aggression, but through sheer enthusiasm.
