Voting - Amaata of Blue Kuroth, Spring 2776
Voting was a hard concept for Amaata, not because she didn't get it - because she did - but because she didn't know anybody yet. Still, she felt like it was her duty to participate in the Weyr's democracy if she was going to be a part of the fabric of High Reaches. Now all she had to do was home that she didn't forsk up too badly and that she would be able to actually be a productive part of her new Weyr. At least she hadn't been expected to run for a position! That would have been overwhelming.

An Ending - Cyan of Blue Cyask, Summer 2777
Honestly, things between Cyan and Kesan had been strained since Cyask had hatched. Perhaps it should have been expected. Perhaps it was even inevitable. Perhaps it was a miracle they'd lasted a full turn after Cyask's hatching.

The fact of the matter was, with wherlinghood tempering their relationship, things just didn't work between the two men. Cyan hated to think that things between them had been so dependent on the physical, but maybe it was better to know.

At the moment, Cyan felt more than a little numb. He was settled on his bed when Cyask shoved his way in, laying his heavy head on his handler's lap. For a moment they were silent, and then Cyask grumbled softly. I'm sorry.

It's not your fault, Cyan sighed. It's no one's fault, really. These things happen. Still, it was a little awkward; Cyan had given up the sea and settled in Semaca for Kesan. Now they were no longer together, but they were both ... here. It was going to take some adjustment.

Well, there was nothing for it except to keep moving forward. "It's not like we're going to let a little heartbreak stop us, eh Cyask?"

If whers could grin, Cyask surely would be. Nothing is ever going to stop us. Certainly not Kesan.

Not Blue - Renkestuous of Green Lumuth, Winter 2777
It had been a good five months since Lumuth had hatched, and honestly, some of the initial glow of Impressing had started to wear off. Oh, Ren still adored Lumuth completely, and he wouldn't have traded her for any of the blues in the clutch. Oh, Lantrath was pretty cool, but Renkestuous didn't think he'd blend very well with K'rin's blue. The tiny green was his perfect match, his soulmate, his everything.

But now that he'd had some time to settle, Renkestuous felt a strange pang in his chest as he watched Lumuth napping in a winter-soft beam of sunlight. She was green. His perfect match would one day do such things as fly and be chased - something he'd never truly prepared for - and while she wouldn't lay eggs or be a clutchmother, she still was different from what he'd expected.

    What he'd made himself expect.

Comparing her to his father's Oraneth felt ... odd. For a long time, Oraneth had been Renkestuous's ideal of dragonhood, the symbol of the defense of Pern. Everything Renkestuous was and wanted, when he wasn't trying to draw attention to himself with his antics, was tied up in following in his father's footsteps, in being a bluerider.

It was hard to put his finger on exactly why Lumuth being green made such a difference. He'd be in the same wing as he would have been were she blue, and while she was notably smaller than Oraneth - while not a massive blue, his father's dragon probably had a good eight to ten feet of length on what Lumuth was likely to achieve - the only real difference was that Lumuth would rise.

So why did it feel different?

Renkestuous didn't notice Lumuth waking until she slipped over and dropped her head in his lap, for all the world like a canine seeking pets. I know I am not who you were waiting for, she murmured softly, but you are the only one for me.

It was so like what she had said when she had first hatched that Renkestuous's heart spasmed. She didn't remember - couldn't remember - but the fact was that she still was and always would feel that way. And ... he felt that way about her, too.

"I do love you, Lumuth," Renkestuous murmured, scratching just behind her headknobs. "I don't even know why I sometimes feel this way. Maybe it'd be easier if I had a memory like yours."

Maybe, Lumuth allowed with the mental equivalent of a shrug. But then, who would remember everything we need to know? And who would remind me of all the things I forget? She nosed at his chest tenderly. We are one. Always and forever.

"Always," Renkestuous agreed, leaning in to rest his forehead against hers. She wasn't blue, but she was perfect. He'd get over it eventually ... wouldn't he?

Possibilities - Cyan of Blue Cyask, Winter 2777
Standing in the doorway of the lodge he shared with Cyask, Cyan peered out at the winter rain, a mug of klah in his hands. It was strange to think of how far they had come in a turn and a half. That time was Cyask's whole life, and most of the time Cyan had been in Semaca.

"You know," Cyan mused, staring at the falling rain, "now that you're fully grown, we could bond a second wher, if we wanted."

If we wanted, Cyask acknowledged. There was an edge of contemplation in his mindvoice.

The wher slipped up next to his handler, and together they faced the rain, and the future.
