Wher is my Mind?
Rex of White Regalisk ~ Early Spring 2775
Oh yes. This was perfect.
Nhelin, that grumpy middle-aged fart and her gold, had actually put an enormous clutch in High Reaches' hands. She's got the Ghost's genes, after all, the strongest genes in all of wherdom. Just like Regalisk-- well, Regalisk couldn't exactly pass on her genes, could she? But still, it was something.
And she figured, if she were to have multiple whers under her belt, imagine having two bearing the Ghost's genes?! You'd be the greatest Thread eater of all time. You've basically won whers at that point. Who needs gold when you could have double trouble combo Thread eating?!
Rex sat in her room with her chin in her hands, daydreaming - two whers. Two!
But... there was a bit of a snag. A Regalisk-shaped snag.
A second wher didn't necessarily fit her plan. It didn't help whers to be shackled down to humans, in fact... it didn't help whers to exist at all. Dragonkin poisoned Pern, to her, but they were the only thing that could stop Threadfall. It was a hard thing to manage.
I am unsure it is a good idea, she said, in a calm - yet firm tone.
I am willing to trust in your decisions - but I can at least guide you in a direction that would be less detrimental to our lives.
"Hear me out, right," Rex said with pure energy as she burst and swiveled around to face her wher. "I know you aren't gonna make friends with another wher-"
Correct.
"-But, right, I thought about this. Thought about it with my forskin' brain. If there's two of you, it means that the bond isn't as strong 'cus I know you have weird opinions about bonds." That she did. It took a while into their relationship for Rex to realise it, but even though Regalisk loved Rex, she wasn't particularly fond of the whole concept of bonding... as a whole. She thought it weakened the human mind, that it dissuaded humans from living their lives in favour of pursuing the endless war against Thread. It means two minds would influence you, which is not what I aim to achieve.
"No, no, right. If there's two of you, it means we fight Thread better, it's forskin' genius. AND- right, here's where you come in."
Hm?
"You can tell the other wher not to get too attached and just focus on the task right? You can push them in our direction, y'know, which is pretty much just stop the planet from melting. And also, right, two means the bond is weaker because I've only got so much brain to give. Not that I wanna make the bond weaker, but, y'know, your whole thing about influence."
The wher nodded, You do have a point.
"And also it'd be one less wher that's gonna let the human coddle the shit out of it." She grinned, knowing that was probably precisely something Regalisk wanted to hear. The cogs turned in the wher's mind. Another wher that would be in good hands, and not the hands of someone who would devote their entire life to them. Someone who could be gently guided towards the task, and only the task.
Regalisk did like that idea.
"Promise, I wouldn't be relying on a second wher, for like, life advice or whatever, but it dooooes help to forskin' deal with Thread, you know? Oh and obviously we don't tell any of this to anyone else they'll think we're weird."
They already think we're weird, dear.
"Yeah but they just think I'm a lunatic, they don't know about your forsked up worldview."
This is very true. Anyway, I suppose you are to make your own decisions. May our... third one be part of our quest to relieve Pern.
