When Pern collapsed it did so in a blaze of fire and ash.
In the middle of the first long interval, in the Turn 1000, a meteor nearly half a mile in length slammed into the southern continent. A rippling wave of fire spread out, leveling everything in nearly a hundred miles and making the very air burn for much longer after that. People, dragons, whers, beasts, everything burned where they stood. It was the middle of the night for many, and most had no warning whatsoever.
Dragons and whers, unable to sustain themselves on the meager food supplies remaining and unable to process the grubs and eked-out foodstuffs that humans could maintain themselves on, went Between one by one by one. Humanity didn't fare much better. Their numbers could be counted in the hundreds across the entire planet, and to say they were barely surviving is an understatement.
Luckily, there was a failsafe. With AIVAS, there was always a failsafe.
After dragons had first been created, and the threat of Thread had been fully determined, genetic material, including eggs, had been sent back to the Dawn Sisters to be cryo frozen, alongside the storage of all the animals that had been transferred over. Clutches of eggs for both dragons and whers had been sent up, to be carefully stored alongside the Restore System, which essentially had stored the genetic material of thousands of humans and had the ability to artificially bring them to life using mechanical wombs and AI to raise them.
So even while the world fell to ruin, AIVAS was patiently waiting. Until sun returned to the world, and it proved that Pern could, maybe, return from the brink. AIVAS began the process of unfreezing and aging the embryos, 'waking' them in their teenage years to teach them the basics, and what was needed of them. Soon after dragon and wher clutches were thawed in small numbers, given the limitation of space and energy sources.
Down on Pern, people began to emerge from the underground, but found little to survive on. Here and there these small pockets of population began to try and eek out a life, but it was hard. Terribly hard.
Eventually AIVAS had a group large enough to send down, along with goods and stuffs they'd need to help repopulate the planet and its environment. In one of the few transport ships still on the Bahrain, AIVAS sent down forty dragons and riders, twenty whers and handlers, and numerous goods to help them get started. The remains of Benden Weyr were chosen as the optimal place to try and return life to the world.
And this is where the story begins, again.
