Chess and Kichsk's probation sentence had been completely unremarkable. And while that was fine in the sense that Chess didn't want to be cooped up in her weyr with no one to talk to but her grouch of a partner, she was getting restless.

Tonight was a literal breath of fresh air. She and Kichsk had been put on guard duty with a pair from Dusk Squad. It was surely going to be a monotonous task, but it was one that was outside the oppressive caverns of Fort Weyr. The prospect of further work outside of the weyr that wasn't under the direct supervision of the Wherleader was enough to convince Chess to be on her best behavior.

"Alright ya grump, make sure ya keep yerself in check and don't go ruinin' this fer us," she told Kichsk as they awaited the arrival of the other wherpair.

Will be fine. Been watchwher longer than you alive, the wher growled back at her. Do job. No nonsense.

Chess nodded approvingly, her hands on her hips. "Good. Ah like to hear that." She looked around the entrance to the weyr. "Now where's that other handler and his wher? It ain't proper to leave a lady waitin'!"

"We here half candlemark early." Kichsk grumbled.
