[EVENT] Weyrling Zoo and Fun Fair

The Blackbirds weyrlings have decided to throw a makeshift summer festival, complete with captive animals (including bugs, rodent and for some reason mold), crafts of dubious quality and some of the strangest contests this weyr has ever seen. All are welcome, but do you really want to go?

Curiosity had driven Keir to the fair being thrown by the most recent weyrling class. Nervously, the slight teenager padded into the weyrling barracks, wondering what they'd managed to pull together. He wasn't sure what he was expecting, but the first 'exhibit' he came across was a line of jewel-toned trundlebugs walking in a straight line around their little enclosure. Bemused, he tilted his head to the side in an attempt to understand, and he nibbled his lower lip as his curls brushed against his shoulder. Bugs? Why ... bugs?

Br'on of Green Mesomelath - Keir

Mesomelath was in her element, apparently. A chance to show off, to talk other people's ears off, and foist useless but eye-catching baubles on them? Forsk yes. Br'on was also there, because he'd been bullied into helping her to craft her little trinkets, and as much as he sulked at a stall with his arms crossed, he was a little proud of how they'd turned out, despite himself. He was no crafter, but they were actually kind of cool looking.

Mesomelath had a display tray strapped to her back, and she was sauntering around the fair, showing off her 'wares', shoving them under people's noses. She'd even managed to talk the little queen flit Apolline into showing off one of the things their human had made, giving the flit promises that the shiny thing would make people want to lavish the flit with attention.

Sun-catchers! the green cooed as she made a circuit of the festival. Genuine, high-grade sun-catchers! Seeing a candidate looking at another stall, she made straight for him. Well hello there, she said to him. Why don't you stop bothering with those creepy crawlies and take a look at something actually interesting. She knelt down so he could see what was laying across her tray.

Shards of colored glass ranging from pebble-sized to the size of a person's palm were tied together with twine in very deliberate patterns. The glass shards were tied together, hanging from the braided twine, dangling from a loop that was clearly meant for being hung on a hook. Hang one of these delightful little things outside, and they'll catch the light and leave lovely little rainbows on the ground and the wall. If you buy one now, we'll even throw in instructions for a little fortune-telling game you can play with them! Her voice was smooth as silk, her round, hatchling-like features oozing adorableness and trustworthiness.

Um.

This was not, of course, the first time Keir had seen a dragon. That had happened when he had been Searched. The dragon that had Searched him had even also been a green, although a full-grown one of course. This one was still less than four feet tall, maybe half-grown.

He had never seen a dragon trying to sell him things before.

The suncatchers were pretty; that was undeniable. Maybe Leaf would like it? He reached out mentally for the little flit, then smiled when she popped out from between to make a quick circle above his head and then land on his shoulder. He smiled at the little green, stroking her head with gentle fingers, then nodded at the tray of sparklies.

Leaf trilled at the suncatchers as she peered at them from her comfortable vantage point on Kier's shoulder, then hopped down with her wings flaring, in an apparent attempt to land on the little dragon's head. His hands clamped over his mouth briefly and Keir closed his eyes, shaking his head, then quickly signed, Sorry.

Mithras of Blue Solarachath- Open

Solarachath was out of his barrack and trying his very hardest to be...sociable. Not because he needed a party, of course. He had his own little flock of three- Mithras, Solarachath and Rai.

But it seemed to mean a lot to Mithras, that he come.

And maybe it wouldn't be so bad, having another dragon or two to talk to.

This mold is the brightest green of all the molds that grow in the weyr, he explained a bit awkwardly, but proudly, as he showed off his sample. He'd gotten a good sample too, one of the best of its species, It grows best where it's damp, like the baths or down by the lake. The bugs and rodents feed on it. A mold like this is the foundation of a healthy ecosystem. It can survive extreme heat and drowning and if left alone, can live for decades.

The weyrfolk liked to kill it, but maybe he could change that, if he showed how interesting a mold it was and the weyr learned to appreciate it.

You're doing great! Mithras assured him.

"We've prepared some special samples, in fitting habitats, for anyone who wants to take home their own. All it needs is a bit of shade and daily watering and it will bring brightness and color to your weyr for turns to come!"

[Windra]

Mesomelath was at it again. Because of course she was. Bubovirith sighed with a subtle shake of his wedge head. That girl, I swear. She always seems up to something, he muttered. The brown lifted a wing to partially cover his maw, as if that would muffle his words somehow. Nevermind that he was a telepathic dragon with no need for a larynx. Although I cannot fault her charm. It's quite appealing to the uncertain patron. You could do to improve your own wiles, you know! A commanding voice would serve well to demand wandering eyes!

"Freaking why, though?" L'rnia moaned with an emphatic shrug of her broad shoulders. "'Come one, come all! Look at our junk! We've got plenty of ... ' what even is this?" She held up some twisted, gnarled thing that was brittle and a brown matching her bonded's hide. "Like ... wood? huh. Kinda looks like a wand, all twisted up n' stuff. Okay, kinda neat! But it's not gonna make people fall over in awe. Lookit all this junk!"

Their spread was made of random knickknacks with no determinable theme. It was a heap of scrap. Everything but the Weyr sink!

To the naïve, yes ... it's certainly lacking in luster. However! A creative mind could easily fashion a hat with this beautiful avian feather! Or perhaps this shell could be a decorative centerpiece!

"Bubba, this all just looks like junk a toddler's snatched. I think only a kid's gonna enjoy this!"

So L'rnia pointed the 'wand' at someone indiscriminate. And swish and flick!

Br'on of Green Mesomelath - Keir

Hey! Knock that off! I'm not a treebranch! Mesomelath snapped at the firelizard as it tried to land on her head. She swore to Faranth, if this little pest ruined her sale, she was going to eat it. Apolline, she snapped, attempting to summon the gold flit her human had. Make yourself useful for once and show this creature how to land properly!

The gold flit was napping on Br'on's stall. She cracked open a single eye at the summons, cracked an enormous yawn, got up, turned around, lay back down, and went back to sleep, very deliberately ignoring the command. Why you little - Mesomelath hissed at the gold, stamping her little weyrling feet in anger at the insubordination.

Mesomelath, don't harrass Apolline, Br'on told her silently. For a brief moment, he felt their wills clashing. It was not the first time. He scowled at the concentration it required of him, but he'd known it was coming and had been able to brace himself. For such a little green, her willpower was not something to underestimate. Another candidate would struggle with it, he was certain. He could not imagine how much more powerful a bronze's will would've been, and part of him was perhaps alright with not bonding to one.

Br'on ultimately won that little game of tug-of-war, but it was a near thing. Mesomelath snorted, tossing her head in annoyance, trying to further discourage the much smaller green. Whatever, I don't need her help anyway. She'd probably just distract this candidate and ruin my sale anyway.

Br'on rolled his eyes at that. She was such a petulant little brat.

The problem was that Leaf - wonderful, sweet Leaf - was a little brat when she wanted to be. Which was apparently right now - she dodged the dragon's jaws and tried again to perch on her head. Keir gave her his best firm look and tried to wave her away from the little dragon. If she got bitten ...

Huffing in annoyance, Keir glared and succeeded in grabbing Leaf, pulling her squirmy body against his chest. He gave the weyrling pair a grin and shrugged at them awkwardly. Maybe he should buy one of the suncatchers to soothe any annoyance Leaf had caused?
