Family Fortunes [Ageno]

Evening, and Ae'flaed was in the dining room, by the fire with a glass of wine at her elbow and her latest piece of needlework in her hands. Delicately embroidered with perfect, neat stitches, the fabric was in the process of being turned into a cushion, with Ae'flaed engaged in attaching the front to the back - a job that didn't take good light or much concentration.

It had been a good day, with the wind just right to sail over Fort's peak by flying straight at the cliff, a maneuver that always put Ae'flaed in a good mood. With Hurricath dozing on their weyrledge and both of them warm and fed to contentness, the aging dragonrider decided that all things considered this was a good time to be alive.

Now all it needed was a good conversation and it would be a perfect day.

A'yri strolled into Fort's dining hall in a chipper mood, a smile on his face and an infectious warmth in his demeanor. It felt like home and he'd been here for hardly a sevenday! Perhaps it had been longer than that and he hadn't noticed? Regardless, Fort was his new home and he was here to stay, especially since he had family here. Though he hadn't met her, Ae'flaed was his grandmother, someone with whom he wanted to connect, after so long not knowing he had other family in other Weyrs.

And it seemed he'd get his chance, spotting a figure settled before a merry fire, her needlework in hand and a glass of wine to enjoy: Ae'flaed herself, if his eyes saw true and what he'd been told didn't mislead him. It was an odd feeling, but A'yri swore he felt almost nervous, rubbing his hands together and taking a breath before approaching, clearing his throat quietly. "Excuse me," he began, not forgetting his manners in spite of his sudden increase in heartbeat. "Are you Ae'flead, by chance? I'm A'yri of Deararth, originally of Benden, but most recently of Igen."

Ae'flaed looked up at the approach of a youngster - not as young as some, but, really, there were just so many youngsters these days - and smiled and his obvious nervousness and attempt at good manners. "Ae'flaed of Daylight's Hurricath, at your service," she replied, then paused.

"A'yri of Deararth? Originally of Benden?" Her eyes flicked to his knot, finding the brown thread before she looked back to A'yri's face with a smile. "Sounds like we might have some catching up to do, grandson," she said, tucking her needle into the fabric rather than pretending she was going to set another stitch tonight. "Your mother said you'd gone to Igen in one of her letters."

Her eyes fell to A'yri's hands, and she positively beamed. "If you could find me a tankard of something drinkable, I'd be most obliged. And don't forget something for yourself!"
