FULL APPEARANCE: While Genma isn’t particularly eye-catching with ordinary brown hair and eyes, he can be considered pretty. Often wearing a grin, he appears to be a rather laid-back, friendly individual. He’s rarely seen not chewing on something, the usual victim being large blades of grass. For all that his coloration isn’t special, Genma chooses to take care of his appearance immaculately, rarely seeing a hair out of place except for during threadfall while he’s flying with Hanatarith. He keeps clean, nails trimmed and hair washed, and makes sure to have all of his clothing well-cared for and tidy.
His eyes almost always seem to communicate some form of amusement, the slightest hint of laugh lines already beginning to form at the corners.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
Genma is the type of person to make the most morbid jokes at the most tense of times. His sense of humour is more than a little sickening to some, and his jokes have been known to make others question his sanity at times. He’s the type of person who uses humour as a coping mechanism, and can be found making bad jokes even after witnessing the most horrific of events. However, he’s also a very laid-back individual who manages to stay very calm through all kinds of scenarios, his clear-headedness a part of him that stays well hidden behind a mostly lazy and sometimes goofy exterior.
Genma is also someone who is far more observant (and intelligent) than one might think. Most people see him and think he’s just an ordinary greenrider, but much like Hanatarith, he watches people, and sees more than they think he does. He usually doesn’t speak or act on such observations of course, but he uses these to judge if a person is a good one to be around or not much of the time. He has slight mother hen tendencies, and has a habit of caring for anybody (un)fortunate enough to catch his attention in any way, shape, or form. He’s often mocked by various people for this, called an overprotective mother by many of them. In fact, he gets so protective over what he perceives as “his” that he will lash out in the extreme if he thinks those people are being threatened- not necessarily physical violence, but he’ll escalate the situation whether the person he’s trying to protect wants him to or not. This is the one situation in which his clear-headedness will fail, and rage and the heavy need to keep his loved ones away from what he perceives as threats or harmful in any way takes over.
He becomes overbearing while in this state of protectiveness, often to the point where people will avoid him just to get away from Genma and his well meaning but stifling actions. He thinks he knows best when it comes to protecting his loved ones, and this reflects in his actions.
He rarely gets serious, but when he does, it’s almost like a switch has been flipped. He goes from friendly, somewhat lazy greenrider, to scarily intense fighter. This is rather difficult to bring out in him, however, usually only triggered by threatening the people closest to him, or the Weyr as a whole.
HISTORY

SIGNIFICANT OTHER: N/A
BIRTHPLACE: Minor Hold
HISTORY: The only child of an ordinary pair of holders in a minor hold, Genma grew up believing he was destined to lead a fairly ordinary life. He hadn’t really had a craft in mind to apprentice under, and by the time he was 15, he’d debated just going into the first craft that would accept him. However, this was quickly derailed when he was searched for candidacy, and jumped at the chance to become a candidate. While he’d been a fairly lazy teenager, he, as most people tended to be, was easily impressed by the idea of becoming a strong dragonrider himself. He’d ended up being taken to Fort Weyr for his candidacy after he’d had a chance to gather himself and his things.
During the brief time of war between Fort and High Reaches, a young Genma, still a candidate then, did his best to avoid the chaos, though this time was also when his dark humour first surfaced. He would often disturb the other candidates with horribly morbid jokes about what was going on, attempting to distract both them and himself. He couldn’t really fight or even protect himself very well at this point, and did the smart thing by staying far away from the fighting. Only by the time the fighting had ended and Fort had won did Hanatarith hatch, though after all of the fighting he had a slight protective streak towards Hanatarith during the first little while as dragon and weyrling.
His candidacy was a short one, as he’d ended up impressing at the tender age of 16, less than a turn after he’d arrived at the Weyr. A beautiful green named Hanatarith, his match in every way, swiftly became his newest focus. Genma, a mother hen even back then, took the most attentive care of his new companion, and even the other Weyrlings who would let him. Despite this, many of the people who met during that time saw an airheaded candidate, and an even more airheaded dragon. Genma and Hanatarith were content with this, skating through their Weyrling years with a decidedly lazy approach. Neither was one for speaking or standing out, and they were both perfectly fine with keeping the spotlight away from themselves.
Their graduation from Weyrlinghood into being a proper Dragon and Rider pair was met with an easy acceptance, knowing full well that they’d end up in one of the high-altitude wings, rather than any of the wings for bulkier dragons. They carried out their duties quietly after they made it into the Daylight Wing, Genma preferring Hanatarith’s company over that of his fellow riders, most of the time. She was a steady, calm presence, and though mysterious, he never really felt the urge to pry into her business. If Hanatarith needed him, she would tell him. They understood each other plenty well enough, with or without words.
They laughed and made bad jokes in the face of horrid situations, and continued on this way for a few years until a new low point in Genma’s life hit. He was informed that both his parents had passed away when he was 25, and while he hadn’t had the closest relationship with them, he still mourned them nonetheless, albeit in his own way, with dark jokes covering up his gloomy attitude. As always, it was Hanatarith to snap him out of the depressed state he’d found himself in, offering him gentleness and firm nudges in the right direction when she felt him slipping too much.
During this same point in time, Z’oshs rebellion and placing under house arrest of a good many members of the weyr, Genma had stayed largely neutral with Hanatarith. He hadn’t fought one way or the other, though he heavily disagreed with Z’osh and his policies, instead choosing to fly under the radar as always. He’d decided against risking the safety of himself and Hanatarith, as they had not been threatened and were unlikely to make a huge difference.
Genma wasn’t quite fine for a while, but eventually recovered, and from there on he and Hanatarith continued on as they had previously. Working, relaxing, and making jokes, happy with each other. While Genma was encouraged to make friends beyond his own dragon and partner of 12 years, he hasn’t quite found any yet, and at 28 is reluctantly searching for those who can handle his and Hanatarith’s particular brand of humour.
