FULL APPEARANCE:
This man is big. Very big. Downright huge, in fact. Tall, broad-shouldered, heavily muscled and generally massive, he gives the impression of being even larger than he already is. His red-brown hair is worn long but typically braided down his back; when left loose it has a tendancy to curl, and his braid is surrounded by a halo of frizz. Never seen without a bandana or a hat, his hairline is left a mystery.
Despite his sheer size S'nek is generally light on his feet, and can move much faster than most would assume someone of his build should be able to. Agile and athletic, he moves with an understated grace. He tends to wear plain clothes in darker colours, and is very fond of black.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
S'nek is a study in contradictions. His face at rest is a formidable scowl, but when awake he's usually smiling. His body looks as though it was made for violence, but he'd far rather be playing with the children in the creche. Light-footed and light-hearted, his laughter can and will fill the dining hall, and his emotions are worn on his sleeves along with his rider's knots. Easy-going and happy-go-lucky for the most part, he makes a good friend and doesn't really do enemies.
Unfortunately for S'nek and any nearby furniture, he has a temper, along with the size and the strength to do real damage when he loses it. He doesn't lose his temper often these days - age has brought some wisdom - but it can make him unpredictable if insulted. His first instinct is generally to flee a confrontation rather than risk it, but if followed or pressed he can and will make points by destroying nearby inanimate objects. He hasn't attempted to destroy any nearby people since he was a child, and the idea of doing so as an adult is one of the few things that honestly terrifies him.
What happens most often is that S'nek will internalise something and start sinking back into himself, withdrawing from life and the world. Taketh can and will start to intervene, looking after his rider, keeping them functional as a pair, and trying to pull S'nek back out again until S'nek is back on the straight and level.
HISTORY
FAMILY: All back in 1607
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: Dead for more than a thousand years
BIRTHPLACE: The roads near Fort
HISTORY:
TW: Death
Selinek, son of a pair of travelling traders, had a happy childhood, travelling every winter with his parents and helping out - and learning things from the people they met in order to make a few of his own marks at gathers. Acrobatics, tightrope-walking, and the like were things that tiny Selinek took to easily. That all came to an end when he was fourteen turns old, though; his parents decided that it was time to come off the road after spending the summer sheltering from Threadfall at Fort, and beasthandlers and merchants were always welcome at the Hold. Stuck in a strange environment he wasn't going to be escaping any time soon, larger than most of the people of his own age around him and dimly aware that he wasn't like most of the other boys in that he liked a lot of the other boys, Selinek withdrew into himself until he and his parents were assigned to take the tithe up to the Weyr. The journey up to the Weyr, so much like the trips he'd enjoyed as a child, brought the young Selinek back out of his shell; on arrival at the weyr, Selinek was unloading the wagon when a bluerider strolled up and informed his parents that if they all agreed he'd be staying.
Selinek settled into Candidacy at the Weyr, and soon found himself in hot water when someone started insulting him. He hadn't technically broken the rules but he knew he was on the edge of being kicked out of Candidacy, and with that incentive he learned better ways to control his temper. He still found himself sitting out his first Hatching in disgrace after destroying two chairs and a table, but he was allowed to stay in Candidacy, and over time and with work - including sessions with a Mindhealer - he improved.
When Selinek was eighteen, blue Taketh emerged from the shell and chose him. Now S'nek, the boy (who'd secretly been hoping for bronze, because only bronzes had any chance at leadership), abandoned any ambition he'd ever had, started his Weyrling training and passed out of it perfectly normally, with the total lack of ambition expected of a mere bluerider. He took up a perfectly ordinary place in the Weyr's single wing as just another bluerider, as well as a perfectly ordinary relationship with a male greenrider.
When S'nek was forty-three, with around two years' more Threadfall expected, his weyrmate died in a particularly nasty Threadfall during a storm; S'nek soldiered on, dedicating himself to fighting Thread. What would happen after the Pass ended was becoming a hot topic of debate, what the dragonriders would do an even hotter topic; S'nek had rather fancied retiring to a more southerly clime with his weyrmate, finding themselves an isolated little beach together, but with N'dule gone that wasn't going to happen. Lost, bereft, alone, S'nek and Taketh fought on, until - during what was one of the last Threadfall of the Pass - they went between to avoid a clump of Thread they only saw at the last moment... and never returned.
