HISTORY:
Josemari was raised in a very humble family, with his mother and father both farmers and Inaki, his older brother a hold guard. He was the sunshine of the family while Inaki was the realist and fairly grumpy, yet they were incredibly close. Josemari it was clear to him early on that Inaki was the family favorite of the two. While he spent his days reading and learning to fish, his brother contributed more to the family and to the little money they had between them all. It was just enough for the 4 to live comfortably together.
During the colder winter months, Inaki was taken by dragon riders to become a candidate, cracks started to appear in the family. The loss of the extra money was harsh and it was clear to his parents that he was jealous it was Inaki and not him who was taken away. To Josemari, his brother was the luckiest man on Pern. He was always favored by their parents, always did whatever he wanted, and never had to work on the muddy farm. Sure, he admired his brother but always wondered why it was Inaki and not him.
By Spring, his parents had made a tough decision. They didn't want to raise their teenage son just for him to become a farmer like them and their parents before him. So letters were sent to his uncle, G'ilen, a blue rider in Fort Weyr. G'ilen and Merurth went to their hold and presented themselves as being there for a surprise visit. He suggested Josemari would thrive at the Weyr, living with him and learning new skills. Living with his uncle seemed like a great idea to Josemari, though it was painful for him to leave his parents, of course. He still believes it was his uncle's idea to take him to the Weyr and not his parent's scheming.
Josemari instantly fell in love with the busy life of the Weyr. He would run errands around for his uncle and grew accustomed to the friendly Merurth. For the first time in months, he got news that his brother, Inaki had bonded to a brown wher and the two had transferred out to Semaca to support the new Weyr straight after his graduation. As soon as he was aware of this, he wrote him letters, of how much he missed him and how he wished he would come to see him. They were all left unanswered.
Once Josemari hit 15, G'ilen pushed him into candidacy to be able to stand for the next clutch. He worked hard, studying and attending every class. Then the clutch was laid. And still no sign of Inaki, it had been months since Josemari had arrived at Fort. He started to believe his brother simply did not want to be around any relatives of his.
The day of the hatching came around. Both Josemari and G'ilen were ecstatic. 15 pretty eggs on the sands, he hoped one would be for him. Josemari had worried about the one with the cracks, there was speculation that it wouldn't hatch or that the one inside was damaged. He was instantly relieved when the blue broke out of it but his concerns were right back as it tumbled around the candidates, hurting some and saying strange things!
But his concern turned into pity, wanting to help the little one as it carried on forward, looking for his human, dragging its face in the sands. And pity turned into love as blue Kreith enveloped his wings around Josemari's legs. Rainbow swirled in his eyes as Josemari heard a coherent voice in his head.
Somebody still cares?
Josemari cared, he cared so much about Kreith. He promised to protect him and to be by his side forever. The two decided together that Josemari would elide his name to J’mari as they spoke.
J'mari graduated at 16. He and Kreith had struggled at times, with Kreith's partial blindness in one eye, his speech problem, and the way he kept hitting himself in the face with his wingtip, it wasn't easy. J'mari never gave up on his great blue, being as committed to him as one could be.
The young boy missed his beloved brother, so he and his uncle both transferred out to Semaca. To J'mari it seemed like a good idea to have a little of his family reunited together in a new land. The transfer to Semaca was easy for J’mari. He and Kreith adored the sandy beaches, spending most of their time there. They fished together and J’mari explored pirate fashions. However happy the blue pair, they always felt as if something was wrong. It was brushed off at first, they thought it was just because Semaca Weyr was a new place for them.
A week passed with no sign of Inaki, that is until J'mari had the idea to find him, it was about time. Instead of being met with hugs and joy, he was met with scorn and shouts. The blue rider didn't understand why they broke out in an argument but to the handler, it was clear that his little brother was immature and blinded by fairytales and would have to be placed in a non-fighting wing. J'mari wanted to fight thread, not do research or whatever, his place was in the sky.
The day after the argument, Inaki came to see the pair in their weyr. He brought along a young kitten, a pretty tabby. He presented it to the two as their graduation gift. Inaki still didn’t believe that J’mari was made to be a dragon rider, the young boy had an idolized view of what life, fighting thread was like. He was so caught up in his own fantasies of saving others, that he hadn’t realized that there was more to it. Inaki still pressured on with his views, yet J’mari continued to refuse to change his mind, and the two continued to have a very fragile relationship.
J'mari later met Brown Akisk, his brother's wher. He learned that the two didn't wish to fight anymore, they had no reason to. There were plenty of people fighting wings in the north continent but not enough people helping Semaca Weyr grow. Inaki had been injured, scored by a thread, and scarred for life. He had seen the reality of Threadfalls and decided he had seen enough for a lifetime. Their place wasn't among others were, digging up burrows, but among others who wished to start a new life away. He wished to help those people, to have a second chance at life.
The brothers did not talk to each other again until threadfall. In which disaster struck G'ilen broke an arm and Merurth was grounded after having a collision and partially scorched his left wing. J'mari and Kreith fought in that fall, he finally realized what it truly meant to be a rider, immediately dropping his child-like views about fighting thread. To their surprise, Inaki arrived a couple of hours later to be with G’ilen and help him, for family must support family. J'mari didn't leave the two alone and neither did Kreith, always trying to cheer up the saddened Merurth. It was during this time that Inaki realized that although his brother was young, he was a good dragon rider.
So handler and rider teamed up to help their saddened uncle and his blue. The two took them out for walks, went fishing, and tried all sorts of things to cheer up the pair. Although they were still grounded, they felt better, and through working together, Inaki and J'mari tried their best to reconcile their broken relationship. They didn't have to talk to forgive each other, they had to be united, like they were once months ago, to be able to forgive.
When G’ilen got better a couple of weeks later, growing out of his depression, Inaki decided to take keep a closer eye on J’mari. Monitoring his brother and ensuring he was safe. At first, to him and Kreith, it seemed like average brother behavior. It was until he felt like he was being watched over constantly and finally caved in, joining a nonfighting wing. At least they were more united than before and didn't argue every single time they came across each other.
And still, Kreith and J’mari remained in Semaca. He didn’t have much reason to leave, besides, his relationship with his brother was growing and mending. Then an egg mysteriously appeared at Semaca’s sands, Kreith announced himself to be the father of the egg and diligently took care of it. J’mari was unhappy the whole time, not being able to do what he wished to do and being pushed around by his brother.
J’mari planned his transfer together with his uncle, away from his brother's prying eyes. He longed to be back in Fort where he was happy, away from Inaki who only wanted to keep an eye on him. He was ready to leave when the Sols clutch happened and Kreith sired two eggs. J’mari decided to stay, leaving as soon as he could. No words were exchanged with his brother, only a letter explaining his actions. And J'mari left Semaca with Kreith, his belongings, and his cat.
The brothers never really spoke again, only the occasional letter asking if they were well after each threadfall. Since then, the blue pair was much happier, dedicating themselves to whatever they wished to do and made them content.
