FULL APPEARANCE: Maze's most noteworthy feature is her hair, worn in an eccentric style. Wavy and messy, she wears it long. A few tight braids are often worn on one side of her head, with a couple of looser braids throughout--often accented with glass beads or other decorations. Her hair is mostly flipped to one side, and is generally a mess, colored a mousy brown. Her skin is dark, her eyes are darker. While Maze is stronger than she looks, that isn't saying much. She's not particularly strong, and in fact, she looks almost fragile at times. Lean, with a narrow figure and slender limbs, she nonetheless excelled when learning how to fight at the Weyr. If you can't be the strongest, you have to be the quickest and the smartest, and she embraces this role. In style, she is eccentric, enjoying too-many accessories and interesting hairstyles, for Pern.
Maze has an accent, a slow drawl, which seems to be at odds with the low, gravely nature of her voice.
She recently got a septum piercing.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: In many ways, Maze can be described as apathetic. She often takes a neutral stance, not out of indecision, but simply because she doesn't give a forsk. She doesn't care about politics, others' feelings, or...really many people at all. She seems like the sort who is constantly at the end of her rope, and is prone to snapping at others who expect too much from her. That said, she is not lazy--she works hard, does what she needs to do, and does it perfectly, but won't do any extra work. Self-serving, she is mostly motivated to do things that have a reward that affects her. What's in it for her? Despite this, she is intelligent, even if not especially creative, and proves herself as a quick learner. If she was more patient and less apathetic, she might make a good teacher, but she only wants to explain things once, and if you don't get it, that's your fault.
A solemn, serious sort, Maze is prone to creating distance in any relationship, budding or established. She is self-reliant and independent, balking at any attempts to control or pressure her. While she has been pushed around, been passive, in her past, she is no longer that person; despite her quiet nature, her tendency to try to blend in, she is assertive and strong. While not actively belligerent or rebellious, simply due to not letting herself care, she can become fierce or hotheaded under the right circumstances. You can't push her or her loved ones around, but she doesn't care if you want to be rude. You can do that. Whatever. This is a woman who seems constantly tired--both of life, and of you.
Despite her apathy, she can be intense, and is prone to tumultuous relationships. If she manages to grow attached, she is extremely attached, and suddenly cares how they feel about her. If they hurt her, forsk them, she's never speaking to their sorry ass again, but generally, she argues loudly as a sign she cares. She wants things to work, and that's why she gets frustrated--but again, this is only in close relationships. Generally, Maze keeps secrets, and can be a bit mysterious. Straightforward, usually, and concrete, she'll tell you that she's not answering a question rather than lying or dancing around the truth. That said, she recognizes that she is suspicious, both as a former Istan at Fort, and as a secretive person--not trusting her is definitely fair, and she doesn't quite trust you either.
Update: After Z'osh's takeover, Temporaeth's eggs, and Cyr'a's...everything, Maze has become more driven. Quiet and grouchy, not to mention blunt and impatient, but she now has an edge, a motivation, a desire to do good for others. A desire to do good for her Weyr, to protect. She still acts unconcerned and aloof, but will do whatever it takes to defend her weyr as a whole. Firm and unyielding, Maze still does not accept excuses and now pushes others--as well as herself--to be better, because Faranth knows they need to step it up.

HISTORY: Maseiya was the only child born to a pair of married holdfolk at Ista Hold. While her parents loved her dearly, they were traditional and overly controlling. They expected her to marry, give them grandchildren, and fill the traditional woman role that they expected her to have. Despite their love, they raised her in a cold yet enmeshed manner. Everything she did was scrutinized by them, and growing up, she had no secrets. As the only child, the expectations of the family fell onto her, and so she shouldered it without complaint. Masanor and Aralleiya had many hopes and dreams for their child, but didn't seem to understand that she may have hopes and dreams of her own. She didn't care to tell them that she did.
Much of her childhood was unremarkable. She was the poster child for well-behaved, and lived up to expectations in all that she did. She didn't enjoy it, but she worked hard to do what her parents wanted, and knew that she would marry who they wanted, live the life they wanted, be who they wanted. When a searchrider came to Ista Hold, when she was 17, however, she was searched. When she asked her parents to let her go to Ista Weyr, they refused, saying it was not her projected course. For the first time, Maze fought with her parents, telling them how frustrated their expectations made her, how little freedom she had, and she said she was going anyways. Her parents finally accepted the decision, but only because they had no choice. They still loved their daughter. At 18, she stood for her first gold clutch, and did not Impress.
Clutches passed her by; she waited until the clutch that would have been her last, shortly before her 26th birthday. A garnet dragon, more common by that point but still relatively new, wandered the sands. Some began to wonder if the dragon would find hers, as time drew on, but the dragon herself didn't seem disturbed. After she'd stared silently at every candidate--Maze included--she approached Maze without hesitation. Did you miss me? was the first phrase Temporaeth ever said. She did not seem worried, and when Maze stared at her in confusion and adoration, Temporaeth added, I knew you would wait. Temporaeth, for all her oddities, only grew stranger as she aged. Her parents, much to her surprise, were proud, and adored Temporaeth.
She had a dear friend, Cyr'a, a greenrider, who she'd met in candidacy, and Impressed alongside. In 2770, a garnet's clutch was stolen from Fort, and Ista pronounced their support of the very Weyr that had stolen it. Of course, Maze didn't care--she didn't care about any of the shifting politics, after all--but Cyr'a did. She wanted to make sure they supported the victim, no matter the mistrust that some might have for former Istans, and Maze followed her.
