FULL APPEARANCE: The first thing many notice about Moenbryda is that she is tall, especially for a woman, standing nearly on par with the tallest men on Pern. She keeps herself in excellent shape, taking pride in her body and liking to wear clothes that show off her figure and complement her features. She also painstakingly maintains her wavy black hair in an unusual cut, long on the right side but cropped close on the left with shaven lines cutting through. She has an expressive face with strong features, attractive in its own way though not conventionally beautiful, marked by bright blue eyes. She rarely wears cosmetics, preferring to let her natural features speak for themselves. Her only regret is that her pale skin burns more easily than tans.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: At first glance, Moenbryda is far from the stereotype of the quiet, bookish scribe. She enjoys physical activity of all sorts, from sparring to running. She drinks and gambles with the best, although she never gambles with real marks. Bold and assertive, she enjoys talking about everything from her work to her dragon to the newest type of ale she's tried. She's fond of teasing the people she's closest to, usually about romantic matters or other personal developments.
Like many in her chosen profession, however, Moenbryda has a near-insatiable appetite for knowledge. She became a scribe after hearing tales of past Threadfalls and Weyrleaders, wanting to study the successes and failures of the past. Now that she's a rider, she's very interested in strategy. Though the political aspects of wingleading don't appeal to her, she feels that she has the knowledge to implement new and better wing formations and drills, and still aspires to leadership some day if only so she has the power to try out her theories.
Moenbryda feels her emotions deeply. She's fiercely attached to her dragon, her weyrmate, and her friends, willing to sacrifice herself for any of them without a second thought. In general, she doesn't put much second thought into things. She's unafraid to speak her mind and puts her foot in her mouth around authority figures frequently, which got her into plenty of trouble during her apprenticeship and weyrlinghood and continues to land her in hot water especially with the current political situation.
She pushes herself too much and needs to be near-constantly reminded to take care of herself. She's been found collapsed on piles of scrolls before, having neglected to eat or drink for hours. She has a bad klah habit, a product of wanting her body to keep up with her mind, and gets extremely grumpy when without her morning...and noon...and afternoon klah.
HISTORY
FAMILY: Bloewyda (mother, bluerider), Wilfsunn (father, greenrider)
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: Urianger (journeyman scribe, Fort Weyr)
BIRTHPLACE: Fort Weyr
HISTORY: Born the child of riders, Moenbryda, like many, was raised in the creche. She knew who her parents were, and they visited her sometimes, but she was very much not raised by them. Energetic and boisterous from an early age, Moenbryda enjoyed getting into scrapes and making messes. She also paid rapt attention in her Harper lessons, to the surprise of some, learning the teaching songs by heart (even if she couldn't actually carry a tune) and picking up on reading and writing quickly. From an early age, she wanted to become a rider, fighting Thread like the riders in the songs.
To the surprise of the same people who had been taken aback at her interest in Harper lessons, Moenbryda apprenticed as a scribe at twelve Turns old. She read voraciously and was one of the harder-working apprentices of Fort. She made unlikely friends with a fellow apprentice, Urianger, seemingly her opposite in every way except for their shared love of knowledge. She enjoyed teasing him but genuinely cared for him.
Surprising fewer people this time, Moenbryda signed up for candidacy bright and early on her fifteenth Turning-day. She was disappointed when she failed to Impress, but persevered nonetheless, focusing as intensely on candidate lessons as she did on what time she had left to pursue her craft and often needing to be herded to bed by the candidatemasters or craftmasters. During this time, she grew somewhat distant from Urianger, who showed no inclination towards candidacy and devoted himself fully to his craft.
Moenbryda was absolutely thrilled when the first female bronzeriders appeared in Ekketoth's clutch, if disappointed that she wasn't among them. She spoke loudly about wanting to Impress bronze at her next clutch, drawing the disapproving eye of the more traditional among Fort. Her wish came true at Imorith's clutch as she Impressed bronze Cendocreth. The eighteen-Turn old could not have been more thrilled. Well, she missed Urianger, but she had a dragon now. She was still one of the first female bronzeriders on Pern. Though she didn't want power for its own sake, she loved seeing new avenues open for herself and other women. And garnets were a fascinating new color as well! So much was happening.
She felt pressured to prove herself as a capable weyrling and worked herself ragged within the first sevenday despite Cendocreth's best efforts. Lexien gave Moenbryda a stern lecture that left a lasting impression on her, and when Lexien was fired, Moenbryda was one of the first and loudest to rebel against Kallia.
High Reaches' final attack on Fort and the resulting end of Golre's reign had little effect on Moenbryda personally. She was excited to witness such a momentous occasion but mourned the riders who had died. She mourned Kallia rather less, but hadn't actually wanted her to die.
Around her graduation, yet more developments occurred for both Moenbryda and Pern. Garnets were clutching, Fort Hold's leadership disappeared or died, High Reaches elected a male greenrider as Senior Weyrwoman...and Moenbryda had the chance to reconnect with Urianger. She'd always harbored a crush on her fellow scribe, though she'd tried not to dwell on it too much during weyrlinghood. Given the flowery love letters she began finding in her weyr, it was definitely reciprocated. Soon, the pair were weyrmated, much to Cendocreth's pleasure. Urianger gifted her a firelizard egg that hatched green Tataru.
Soon after the official recognition of Semaca Weyr, Moenbryda ironically took a step back from her involvement in contemporary events to dive back into the past. Though she was horrified at the events surrounding the Trailblazers, she'd also finally recognized that there was only so much she could do, and decided to focus on finishing her apprenticeship.
Events did not entirely escape her. She made her opinions known about the Istan takeover, not recognizing Negan as the true weyrleader and continuing to support Monty and Fort as the true Peacekeepers. She was very glad to see the tail end of Ista a couple of seasons later.
She'd been curious about the eggs cropping up around Pern, but was horrified when the truth was revealed. Nornth's disastrous maiden flight and clutch and untimely death were compounded by Fort Hold's heavy losses affecting the Weyr. She hated the traditionalists' increasing hold upon Fort Hold and Weyr, especially when a bronzerider was installed as wingleader in an upper wing. Not only was that incredibly inefficient in her opinion, it was also a sign that opportunities for non-metallic riders were beginning to lessen.
Moenbryda was extremely annoyed by Z'osh's ascension to Weyrleader. Right after she finally achieved journeyman status, he put Tuckal under house arrest and grounded Moenbryda and other riders he deemed unsuitable. Moenbryda plans to fight back.
