APPEARANCE
EYES: Light brown
HAIR: Black
HEIGHT AND BUILD: five feet and seven inches, thin
FULL APPEARANCE:
Lightly muscled and not too tall, Tokoyami doesn't look like much of a wherhandler most of the time. Certainly he doesn't look like he belongs with the bronze bonded to him. If one had to hazard a guess, he probably looks like a harper or a scribe. He always has a writing implement tucked away somewhere, and he has very neat handwriting. Clean-shaven, he keeps his dark hair pulled away from his face. He likes dark clothing, which let him melt into the darkness at his discretion but also tends to make him stick out in any well lit environment.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
Tokoyami is not much of a talker and never has been. He prefers to use archaic terms that he found in a book over the language that other people normally use, like 'revelry' over party, or 'disgraceful' rather than 'disappointing'. He's reserved enough that he doesn't like to talk to strangers. He picks his words because he likes them, sometimes because they rhyme, and he would rather leave the conversation than rephrase something. No, these two words might sound like they mean the same thing, but if he meant something simpler he would have said something simpler!
Communication is not his strong point.
He's both serious and even-keeled, so he's not fond of losing his temper. He jokes sometimes that his fire lizard Dark Shadow is his temper, given the brown's mercurial nature. Being a wherhandler suits him because he's fond of the darkness. A fondness for both flowery language and darkness comes together in his poetry. It's not necessarily good poetry, but he's not a harper and doesn't claim to be. He writes because he likes to, not to share with the world.
HISTORY
FAMILY: parents worked in the creche
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: none
BIRTHPLACE: Keroon Hold
HISTORY:
Tokoyami was born to a pair of creche workers at Keroon Hold. When he was eleven, he Impressed a brown fire lizard from a basket of eggs left in the dining hall. He was big and dark enough to disappear into shadows with relative ease, so very creative Tokoyami named him Dark Shadow. Very inventive.
He was Searched at fifteen, whereupon he went to Igen Weyr. He stood for a few clutches there, then transferred to Fort for the Seeker's clutch. He was old enough to also stand for wher clutches by then, and he was happy to stand for both. He bonded with another candidate well enough that the two began introducing themselves as foster brothers. Life was good, and Tokoyami had high hopes of taking to the sky with his foster brother. Until the Paladin clutch, that was. The stories of the Trailblazer hatching were bad enough, but Nornth's reign of terror left Tokoyami unwilling to take to the sky. He went back home to Keroon.
He still wanted a wher, but he was content to make a life for himself until the opportunity came along. Wher clutches were fewer than dragon or flit clutches, so he was saving up for an egg when it happened.
A freak accident in 2769 changed his life for good. A bronze lost his handler to a freak accident and refused to go feral. He was presented to the limited pool of local wher candidates, where he picked Tokoyami. In honor of his new bond, Bronze Sanrosk renamed himself Santorosk.
Tokoyami and Santorosk were encouraged to go to the weyr for training, and it took just a handful of months for them to be properly convinced. When they arrived at Igen, there was a kerfluffle regarding what squad they should join. Tokoyami got it in his head that Santorosk was a perfect fit for the healer's wing both because of his size and his history. It was poetic! (He may have written a few poems about it.) Everyone else, including Santorosk, maintained that it would be much better to join one of the main ground crew squads, and Tokoyami was eventually convinced.
That was several Turns ago, and Tokoyami transferred back to Fort when he heard they were taking wherhandlers more seriously. His foster brother was there to greet him upon his arrival, and it was like reuniting with family.
After a little while, Santorosk encouraged Tokoyami to sign back up for candidacy to get a second wher. Wher clutches remain few and far between, so Tokoyami doesn't expect to become a dual handler any time soon. Santorosk believes that it will be good for both of them.
