Jimmy is your average-looking forty-year-old. His face shows signs of stress and age, his fair share of wrinkles popping up here and there. His hairline has receded quickly, and he makes up for this by keeping some of his hair in front of part of his forehead to make it look like he has more hair than he does. He isn't very tall when compared to a lot of other men you could find on Pern, and he isn't some muscly dude. He has some squish to him here and there.
What isn't average-looking about him is his choice of outfits. Sure, while the actual articles of clothing are normal, it's the loud, clashing colors and patterns that he chooses that make him stick out like a sore thumb. There's always the odd time he wears colors that actually look nice together. But, more often than not, your eyes are in for a strain just by looking at him.

It's surprising that Jimmy still has a voice from all the talking that he does. The man loves to talk and hear himself talk. He's quite cunning and intelligent. Less so in the book smart way- although, if he applied himself, he could be- but more so in the street smart way. He's persuasive and will try to weasel and worm his way into your good graces with easy-to-get references and silly jokes. He's pretty arrogant, but that sentiment is often misplaced. He'll think himself better than others without any proof that that’s actually true. In his mind, he's better because he's him.
He is not a particularly good man, but he wants to be a great one. He sets up these quick schemes based entirely on lies that he makes up on the spot in order to screw people out of their marks. As it heavily relies on improv, it's a good thing that Jimmy highly values showmanship and theatrics! You see this random object with a long-winded backstory he created just now? Yeah, it's actually worth a fortune (it's not), but he needs to get rid of it. If you give him whatever you have on you, you can have it. So on and so forth. He's done these quick schemes since he could figure out how to do them. Part of his massive ego lies in the fact he knows he's fairly good at what he does.
Jimmy has mastered compartmentalizing his outer circles from his inner circle. Underneath all that arrogance and bravado lies a (comparatively) calm man who cares for the people he loves, and he isn't afraid to show that to them. When he's with you, he is with you 100% of the way. He will do absolutely anything to protect his, and those he loves', interests. Jimmy is a showman who will never give up and will always try to find a way to get what he wants.

HISTORY:
James was the youngest child of two weyrfolk at Benden Weyr. Where his older brother, Chuck, was incredibly book smart and excelled at everything placed in front of him, Jimmy was more of a social butterfly. The two of them always knew that they had each others' back, no matter what the cost.
He made friends quick and figured out how to scam them quicker. His first and best friend was a boy named Marco, and the two of them became a very dangerous duo. They pickpocketed, they got their friends to give them their toys by talking them into it, they found whatever ways they could to get whatever they wanted. If they had to play the long con, they would! It was the thrill of it all for them, and that was how they bonded.
While Jimmy was busy doing this, his brother was busy standing for a dragon. Lucky him, he Impressed to a bronze. Jimmy was so proud of his brother for this. Imagine! Chuck, the Benden bronzerider! Wow, what a way to bring some honor to their family. You know, the honor that Jimmy was throwing down the drain at every given opportunity. When Jimmy wasn't picking up odd jobs, he was hanging out with Marco, doing whatever dumb scheme they'd planned out that day.
Jimmy would have to get caught sometime, and get caught he did. A trail of constant petty thievery and conning would have to get picked up by somebody eventually. Thankfully, Chuck stuck his neck out for him. Although, he would only do that if Jimmy cleaned up his act, acted his age, and tried to find one steady job. Then, and only then, would Chuck would use his bronze rider status to do his best to keep Jimmy from facing any repercussions outside of a slap on the wrist. Jimmy accepted the conditions of Chuck's help and got himself a steady position down in the kitchens. While Jimmy all but revered his brother for his help, Chuck's opinion on his brother was at an all time low. He always scrutinized every decision Jimmy made from then on, always trying to keep his baby brother on the 'right path'.
It was surprising, but somehow Jimmy found love there. Kimberly, a wonderful, intelligent woman who he thought- no, knew- was too good for him, was also working in the kitchens. They quickly became work besties, then real besties, than the next thing you knew, they were dating. It was just something simple and real, and it made the world to Jimmy. Unfortunately, she wanted more out of life, and he was- at the moment- content to work in the kitchens. She became a candidate and impressed to a blue. He didn't. Their schedules ceased to line up, and their relationship fizzled out. They remained friends, but it was never the same.
Years passed. Eventually, it seemed to Jimmy that all the best people in the world were dragonriders. Kim. Chuck. Both of them were doing their 'patriotic duty to Benden Weyr'. Whether it was driven by a good reason like protecting the weyr, or by some selfish reason like wanting to prove that he was some great man, Jimmy wanted a dragon too. It was too late though, as he was way past the age where he could stand and get a dragon. He was 32 for Faranth's sake! What was he thinking? ...And then it hit him. Well, he couldn't get a dragon... but, he could get a wher. After taking some of the money he had saved up, he went out and bought a wher egg.
Jamesk was a perfect match for Jimmy, which meant she was a nightmare for Chuck. When Jimmy asked if Chuck was proud of him, Chuck grounded his teeth and said yes. No, he was not proud. No, he was not happy. This was the start of a what Chuck thought was a slippery slope down the hill to Jimmy going back petty crime. It only took a season or two to pass before the cat got out of the bag. Chuck let out that he wasn't happy that Jimmy got a wher, saying that Jimmy didn't get a wher for the right reasons like Chuck did for his dragon. This broke Jimmy's heart into pieces, his own brother who he idolized hated him? The two got in a heated argument. They stopped talking. They tried to be civil again. They got in another argument. They stopped talking. They tried to be civil again. Argument, separation, civility, argument, separationm civility. It was an endless cycle that neither would try to end because they were family. They were supposed to be there for each other.
It all came to a very heated end when it was found out what Benden did to Alayna and Wyzeth. Chuck was a bronzerider at Benden, which meant he had to be involved. How dare Chuck take some moral high ground when he himself was a right piece of shards? That was it. Jimmy was done. He wanted nothing more to do with Benden, with Chuck, with all of it. The only thing he would miss would be Kim, but they could write. He applied for a transfer as quick as possible, and jumped ship to Fort Weyr.
Jimmy was going to focus on himself and what made him happy, not what made Chuck happy. If that meant the odd little con here and there, well... he'd make sure to be 30 times as discrete than before. Yeah, there were some bad moments, like Nornth's flight. But, what could he do? He wasn't a dragonrider. And, you know? He was actually midly greatful for Z'osh's little revolt as it kept him from having to do any real wherhandler work. Gave him some time to decompress and process what had happened between him and Chuck. Now it's back to business as usual, and he's happy to live without the scrutiny of his brother at every turn.
