FULL APPEARANCE: Adelais is a bit on the pretty side, with wavy black hair that insists on sitting in a messy pile on their head. Their eyes, green as summer grass on a bright day, are almost always gleaming in amusement or interest at someone or something. His skin is white and slightly tanned, only marred by a small mole next to his mouth. Adelais stands a little over 5’ 9” and is quite slender and petite. Their body is bordering on skinny with little muscle mass, as the most exertion he uses daily is perhaps moving some books around, but he has begun to run in an attempt to build himself up a little more. He is also quite against appearing dirty, and takes great pains to look perfect, with flawless nails and unblemished skin. As for clothing, Adelais experimented and decided a couple years ago that he’d like to both keep circulation in his legs and appear semi-respectable for his fellow Harpers. Thus, he wears a black turtleneck shirt with respectable slacks and dress-style shoes at formal occasions in the Harperhall, and a simple flowing tank-top shirt with a pair of odd legging-like pants and his favorite lace-up, knee-high brown leather boots for casual summer wear. In the cold seasons, no one can see what Adelais wears under his thick layers of coats and scarves.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: Adelais, as a whole, can be quite a handful. In general, he is snarky and sarcastic, with little to no respect for people of authority, except the Masterharper. Adelais is also well-known around his hometown as a prankster, a shameless flirt, and general menace, and is almost always up to no good. The young Harper may seem a little ill-tempered, but he’s truly just a mischievous creature that enjoys fun a bit too much. This is due to the sheltered life he had with his grandparents. Kept indoors with little to do, Adelais found his own ways to entertain himself. Said pranks are harmless, meant only to vex the target and cause a good-natured laugh, but Adelais knows how to use ‘pranks’ to protect himself if need be.
Deep down, however, Adelais is a little lost. He never truly recovered from the loss of his mother and has very few memories of her, but he holds these memories close to his heart, just like her amethyst necklace, the only physical thing he has left of her. He also requires klah every morning to function. Without at least one mug of klah, Adelais will become unbearably grouchy and unwilling to listen to anyone for the rest of the day as he suffers a headache.
Adelais loves being a Harper except for the copying work. Adelais can also get bored very quickly and easily, so it can be rather difficult to get him to pay attention to something important that he considers mind-numbing. They enjoy playing musical instruments, with strings being their favorite, and drums their least favored. Unfortunately, Adelais has an issue with his pride. If he feels his pride has been insulted, no matter how slight the offense, he will use every prank in his book to get back at them until he gets bored and moves on or his vengeance is satisfied. In addition, Adelais doesn’t like to talk about their father, and if the topic is brought up, they’ll either get closed off entirely or fly into a fit of pique, spewing hurtful words in relation to the man who sired them.
Adelais enjoys the outdoors when he can, particularly in summer. He hates going out in winter, and will make every effort to stay inside and out of the cold. Adelais has only recently begun considering Candidacy for becoming a Dragonrider, feeling he has more of a chance to Impress than to become a Journeyman Harper. They have thus begun to ‘train’: run around the walkways, do more errands and physical work for his superiors in attempts to build his strength, and attempting to curtail the amount of complaining he does. Adelais also has a fondness for sweets, and can occasionally be ‘persuaded’ to do something in exchange for a good pastry.
HISTORY
FAMILY:
Unknown father - absent since before Adelais' birth
Grandparents - mother's parents - living in Fort Hold
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: Open! ;)
BIRTHPLACE: Fort Hold
HISTORY: TW: death/loss
Adelais was born to a lovely woman in Fort Hold, with no father to speak of. The boy was raised by his mother alone and was quite happy in their snug little house, up until her death from a wasting illness in 2756, when Adelais was about 6 Turns old. With nowhere else to go, they were placed under the care of their grandparents, the mother’s parents. At a young age (around 9 Turns), Adelais expressed an interest and talent for being a Harper, and began to Apprentice in the Fort Hold Harperhall. However, he never graduated from an Apprentice due to ‘behavioral issues’, his habit of pranking anyone and everyone, and the attitude of disrespect toward superiors he cultivated as he grew older. Adelais thinks they should have graduated by now, three years after the minimum age of graduation, and is still quite bitter over what he sees as a personal failure.
As his experiences with people grew as he learned at the Harperhall, Adelais felt less and less comfortable being defined simply by the gender he was born as. He felt freer the day he allowed himself the thought of blending himself, rather than simply remaining only male. Besides, he’d never quite fit in with other boys as he grew up, both due to his physical size in comparison to his peers and the attitude differences between them. Ever since that time, they’ve wanted to be called ‘they/them’ pronouns, but they still accept ‘he/him’, knowing it’s sometimes simpler to refer to their born gender at times. Even before the time they’d become guild with their gender, Adelais came to terms with sexuality. He had felt no spark when interacting and flirting with the girls of his Hold, but the exact opposite happened when he did the same with the boys. Thus, they’ve accepted their gayness with pride, and has voiced their pride to the world several times when prodded to do so.
When they reached adulthood, Adelais semi-moved out of his grandparents’ home, though he still visits frequently and occasionally stays the night. They have secured a room in the Harperhall to stay in, and has been continuing their training, still an Apprentice to this day. It was only recently that Adelais began to think of becoming a Candidate to the nearby Fort Weyr, as hopes of becoming a Journeyman Harper faded. As of late, when the weather and their schedule permits, they go on runs and perform other such strengthening activities in an attempt to grow fit enough to be considered for the Weyr.
