FULL APPEARANCE: At first glance, it can be easy to mistake Aoi as someone who identifies as a woman. Aoi had very long curly brown hair, often held back in a ponytail when he is working or training. He often wears more generally feminine clothes, in softer colors. He is also slightly overweight, with more weight centered around his chest, gut and hips. He is notably different looking than his adoptive parents, due to his pale skin and hair color.

Aoi is genuinely a polite and kind young man. He is respectful to those older than him and will often refer to them as miss, mister or mx. He has a tendency to be quiet, often keeping his thoughts to himself as he does not wish to cause conflict towards anyone. This even means going along with a plan he would not agree with, as he isn't one to object.
He tends to hyperfocus on stuff when he's devoted. He will spend all of his time working towards a goal he's set for himself. However, this also pushes him towards becoming exhausted as he will sometimes skip sleeping when he is in this focused mode. It has even come to the point he can be found asleep at his desk, with said desk being cluttered with stuff due to his focus. Along with this, he doesn't seem to like himself enough to stick to one thing for the rest of his life. However, it also seems to motivate him as he will often try to follow his goals despite what others may do in his situation.
Ever since impressing to Kurabeth, Aoi has admittedly developed a couple more headaches from the other's questions. However, there is no denying how much he cares about the dragon. He is always happy to indulge in his questions and tries to help him think reasonably, despite his own confusion at some of his questions. He knows some people underestimate him, but he plans on being the best dragonrider he can be- and nothing will change that!

Aoi grew up a pleasant life in Fort Weyr, his father being a bluerider and his mother being a healer who had trained in the Healer Hall in Fort Hold before coming to the weyr. The two cared greatly for their son and let him know that, despite how different he looked to them, they still loved him and would always be there for him. Even at a young age, he had displayed an interest in music and seemed to have no interest in becoming a dragonrider. Thus, when he turned eight years old, he became an apprentice to a harper, learning from the journeyman the skills he would need to become a harper.
When he was around eleven, Golre had set raids against Fort Weyr, attacking it. Aoi's father fought in the battle and the boy was scared. He didn't want to lose his dad. Luckily, Golre was killed in the second raid and the dragonrider came home to his family. While some people headed to High Reaches Weyr to help the weyr, life went back to normal in Fort Weyr.
Until the day Aoi will claim changed his life.
While attending a hatching when he was eleven, a gold dragon hatched from an egg and immediately began to attack a brown dragon who had hatched at the same time as her. As he watched, a young candidate ran over and pulled the gold off of the brown. His eyes seemed to glow and he seemed to not even hear his parents discussing the hatching as he looked at the older woman. He immediately began to look up to her. The gold was terrifying, he had to admit as a child, but she was just so cool!
He later found out the names, the gold being Serapheth, who later killed another candidate, and the brown being Athreth. However, the weyrling was called Tuckal and he wanted to be everything she was: brave, strong, ready to stop fights. He told his parents that he wanted to become a candidate now and they were surprised. However, as his mother was a healer and knew that a lot of apprentices do not become journeymen when they become candidates, she informed him of the possibilities. Aoi decided that he would push himself to graduate before becoming a candidate, working hard until he graduated at age nineteen.
During the time he was studying to become a harper journeyman, a lot of things had happened. Benden Weyr, in 2765, had become a threat and had kidnapped several riders. Tuckal had joined the assault and helped rescue the riders. Later that year, Ista Weyr sent a delegation to take over Fort Weyr, putting Negan as the weyrleader to become the new peacekeepers. However, this didn't last long, as Tuckal soon took back control of the weyr. All this did was make Aoi adore the sr. weyrwoman even more.
Shortly after he became a candidate, two eggs disappeared from Fort Weyr and he was a bit saddened at this. He thought he would have impressed, but he eventually got rid of that thought. He wanted a dragon just like Serapheth, because he wanted to be just like his idol!
UPDATES
- Early Spring 2773: During the Broken Vessels hatching, Aoi is bitten by the dragon who hatched from the Void Heart egg. The injury was not permanent, but did leave Aoi with some scarring.
- Early Fall 2774: During the Aegis of Memory hatching, the candidate was admittedly nervous when Kurabeth approached him. However, this was soon replaced with happiness as the two bonded.
