BASICS

NAME: L'rine (formerly Lennamarine)
GENDER: Female
PRONOUNS: she/her/hers
ORIENTATION: Homosexual

BIRTHDATE: Early Spring 2746
AGE: 25 as of Early Fall 2771
LOCATION: Fort Weyr
OCCUPATION: Sweeprider / unofficial Weyrwoman's assistant / guard
WING: No Wing / grounded for Threadfighting

APPEARANCE
EYES: Very blue, with darker edging to the iris.
HAIR: Pale blonde and very slightly wavy, kept long.
HEIGHT AND BUILD: 5'6", slight build, almost boyish.
PLAY-BY: Elle Fanning
FULL APPEARANCE: L'rine is slight, feminine, and classically pretty, with arched eyebrows, large lambent blue eyes, and soft lips. Her skin is pale and generally flawless, with no freckles or acne. Of course, she spends a good deal of time ensuring that she looks this way, using all sorts of lotions and unguents on her fair skin to keep from burning or getting any sun-spots. While a younger, softer version of her once wore cosmetics, L'rine no longer uses any such enhancements, unless she is going to be in the presence of high-ranked Holders.

In clothing, L'rine trends towards the severe. Though she has never been comfortable wearing only breeches, L'rine generally wears a divided skirt over leggings or pants, with boots with good ankle support and hidden knives. Her shirts are usually just a little loose, in order to conceal other blades, and tend to be all but devoid of ornamentation. She does have a taste for fine clothing which is channeled into material rather than fashion - she owns several silk shirts and trends towards wearing only fine things close to her skin, however work-ready her outer clothes may be.

In trying to rescue Lennask in the tragic accident that took her wher's life, L'rine was heavily threadscored on her hands and arms before water was poured on her to drown the thread. Time and hard work have given her her manual dexterity back, but she lacks fingerprints and her hands ache in the cold.

PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: Once a spoiled and narcissistic girl, hardship has tempered L'rine. While she still has a tendency to believe that things are centered on her - that snubs are purposeful or that bad luck is malice - L'rine no longer acts as if the world is to be handed to her on a platter, nor does she assume that she's the only real player in the room. Rather, L'rine is constantly monitoring the people around her - and constantly monitoring Saikoth, in case she needs to step in and redirect her dragon's fighting instincts.

Coldly ambitious, L'rine will take most opportunities to better her position, if she believes that it will benefit her in the long run. As such, when Saikoth was poisoned, L'rine was not content to simply be a grounded rider, and perhaps wander off and retire to Semaca Weyr. Rather, she was determined to claw out a place for herself in the world. She is tightly focused on maintaining her position and her safety, and works and trains hard to stay there.

And safety is surely on her mind, at all times. She still believes that Lennask's death was due to sabotage, and Saikoth's poisoning - followed by Blaze's poisoning and Nornth's ensuing death - has made her even more paranoid about checking her food and being on watch all the time. Her hypervigilance makes it hard for her to trust people, and she hasn't had a close relationship (aside from her dragon) since Lennask's death.

Despite time and distance, L'rine's PTSD from her wher's death is still severely triggered by the Threadfall and groundcrew - especially flamethrowers and the acrid smell of Threadsmoke - and she cannot serve on groundcrew, instead leaving the region for the hours of Threadfall.

HISTORY
FAMILY: Grandmother: Marla
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: none
BIRTHPLACE: The ocean west of Tillek, on a fishing sloop. Grew up in Tillek Hold.

HISTORY:
TW: attempted suicide, dragon violence, poisoning

To hear her tell it, Lennamarine was born on a great fishing ship, during a late-winter storm off the coast of Tillek. In the ensuing shipwreck, all hands were lost to the sea, but the shipfish took pity on her, pushing her onto floating flotsam and bringing her to the shore to be found in the clear spring morning, amongst the sand and dune flowers. The real story is rather less glamorous: she was, indeed, born at sea, early, on a small fishing sloop returning from a fortnight-long deep-sea fishing trip. Her mother was a common deckhand; her father, the captain; her baby-bed, a pile of rank fishing nets lain over with canvas. The storm that claimed the lives of her parents some three turns later then somehow became conflated with the story of her birth, and people got tired of correcting her.

After her parents died, Lennamarine was adopted by her mother's mother, a doting woman by the name of Marla. Though her father was loosely related to the Lady Holder of Tillek (quite possibly on the sinister side, with some talk of him being the half-brother bastard child of her father, rather than a second cousin as was commonly claimed), the Lord Holder was not particularly inclined to bring her into the immediate family. Marla and Lenna were well taken care of by the Holders, and Lenna was afforded every opportunity available to her as she grew older. None of the Crafthalls interested her, of course; she learned how to act like a lady instead, and her fantasies were filled with dragons. Gold dragons, in particular. Sometimes two of them - twins, identical ones, and so closely entwined that they had to choose the same person. Lennamarine, of course.

Any time Searchriders came to the Hold, she presented herself, even when she was too young to be accepted to High Reaches Weyr. When a rider finally Searched her (possibly out of being tired of dealing with her every time he visited), she brought all her things with her, said her farewells, and left without a backwards look. Of course she wasn't coming back. She was going to be a goldrider. She was going to rule.

Her grandmother, truth be told, was none too sad to be seeing the back of her.

Things, of course, went rather differently than that. While exploring around High Reaches in the winter, Lennamarine was grabbed and accidentally concussed by a wild gold wher. The wher bonded to her while licking her head wound clean, becoming Lennask - but it took several days, and Lennask coming and searching her out in the Weyr, before Lennamarine realized that the strange new sensations of being Bonded to a wher were more than lingering concussion symptoms.

It was a difficult transition for the young woman, but Lennamarine was determined to grasp gold-handling with both hands. When, some months later, Lennask Ran and laid a clutch of seven (Prehistoric Clutch), it was with pride that Lennamarine took her turns egg-guarding with Lennask and brown Risk. During this period, Lenna was gifted with a small piece of "coal" - a black firelizard egg that hatched into her little green Thistle. Not long after, the clutch hatched, including a gold daughter.

But her happiness was not to last. Roughly a year after Bonding with Lennask, the gold broke through a hidden burrow of Thread, and was scored to death. Lennamarine severely burned her hands and arms trying to pull her wher out of the Thread burrow, and had to be pulled away and doused with water to save her life and her arms. Days later, a devastated Lennamarine escaped the healer's weyrs and walked back to where Lennask had died, climbing into the burned-out burrow to die where her wher had left her.

Rescue came for the unwilling, and Lennamarine's mind slowly began piecing itself together, yet still shattered and broken. Unable to believe that a simple accident in the haze of Threadfall had led to her mind-mate's death, Lenna became paranoid, convinced that someone had pushed Lennask into the burrow. That summer, determined to get revenge somehow, Lennamarine transferred to Fort Weyr for the Trailblazers clutch. Her plan was to forcibly Impress the gold dragon, then use the ensuing power to root out Lennask's killer.

Fate - or Saikoth, rather - had different ideas for her. The brown dragon demanded Impression, and got what she wanted, and a good thing for L'rine, too - for Nornth would never have tolerated such an imposition. Saikoth was a savage creature - savaging the Candidate Avelon and her own twin brother Zamth before Impressing, and turning on the Candidate Tana even after Impression. Her violence continued even at the hatching feast, where her fight reflexes saw her savaging Quatre and green Exiath.

It fell to L'rine to build control, and quickly. The young woman had jewelry made for Saikoth - a light sort of bridle, to remind her not to snap at anything that passed by - but such decorations were only a reminder, and the direction had to come from L'rine. She worked hard to redirect Saikoth's impulses, or to ground them out, so that the brown would not simply kill any creature that offered so much as an imposition on her or her rider.

Such work was clearly not enough for some - for Pellay of blue Qth poisoned the Trailblazer clutch, attempting to kill the dragons who had savaged or killed others. Saikoth was poisoned badly, going into seizures and damaging her left eye. The poisoning itself caused long-term partial paralysis in her wings and tail that took turns to recover, and nerve damage that causes her extremities to tingle constantly (which bothers L'rine far more than it does Saikoth).

The remainder of weyrlinghood was a fearful struggle, for Saikoth could fly only clumsily, and couldn't perform any of the maneuvers required for Wing formations. Only at between did they excel, in the clear cold clarity of that space between spaces. She kept herself out of politics, focusing on keeping Saikoth and herself safe and without a body count.

Nornth's maiden Rise changed everything. The brutality demanded by the gold sent Saikoth on edge for days, and the temper of the Weyr towards the Trailblazers - never particularly warm - seemed even worse. For an already-hypervigilant L'rine, the next months were torturous, waiting for the next attempt on her dragon's life. Perhaps she should have been watching for an attempt on her own life, for death came first not for Saikoth or Nornth, but for Blaze, carrying the gold away with her rider.

It was too much for L'rine to handle, and the young woman all but fled the Weyr, moving to Igen Weyr within days. It was at Igen where her healing could start. She started working with a mindhealer to start dealing with her persistent and exhausting nightmares and the most distressing of her triggers. She started flying short sweeps to exercise Saikoth's wings and tail, and instead of Wing training, working with Igen's Weyrwoman doing paperwork, running messages, and other such work.

After some thought and a suggestion from one of the Wingleaders, L'rine started training in hand-to-hand combat, both with sticks and with knives. When the Weyrwoman needed to travel, L'rine and Saikoth could accompany her - Saikoth offering protection by dint of her size, ferocity, and willingness to offer bloody violence, and L'rine by her newfound skills with hand and knife, and by looking rather less like someone who could offer bloody violence.

Four turns with Igen seemed to pass in a blink. After the coup of Fort Weyr, and the retaking of the Weyr in favor of Tuckal of gold Serapheth, Igen's Weyrwoman suggested that it might do the Fortian Weyrwoman good to have something of a bodyguard, given the various attempts on her life and person over the past decade. After some thought, L'rine decided to face Fort Weyr again, and has returned to her dragon's hatching-place to see if she could be of use there.

SAIKOTH

BASICS

NAME: Saikoth
BIRTHDATE Late Summer 2765
AGE: 6 as of Early Fall 2771

APPEARANCE
LENGTH: 60 ft
HEIGHT: 15.5 ft
WINGSPAN: 90 ft
COLOR: Brown
HEX CODE: #70614E

FULL APPEARANCE: Saikoth is enormous. Seriously. She rivals bronzes in sheer size and strength, and would give some more fighter-type golds a run for their money. She is solidly built, strong with no shame or sense of weakness. Actually, it would be hard to find a part of her that is vulnerable. She is a faded brown all over, with a dark whirl of color over her face and lighter patches scratched over her wingsails. There are lighter geometric shapes that cover her body, like interlocking patterns from her chest down to her tail.

Due to the fellis poisoning, and the seizures caused by it, Saikoth has total vision loss in her left eye (from infected scratches; the eye is constantly black, with visible grey scratches across the surface of it). She is still somewhat clumsy in flight, particularly during takeoff and landing. Nerve damage in her extremities leads to constant tingling; this bothers L'rine more than Saikoth.

PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: Saikoth is a strong, silent type. Or, silent in the fact that she chooses not to speak much, not even to others. Speech is inefficient and she has no time for it. She wants to fight. It doesn't matter who and it doesn't matter what, she wants to fight. Maybe a part of her doesn't understand that she is made to fight Thread, but that fight drive is there. It will be a problem when she gets bigger, as only larger dragons will be able to stand on even ground with her. Even then... well, she doesn't really have very good self-control and it doesn't seem like there is a lot that can stop her, except Nornth.

To her bonded, Saikoth is at their beck and call, but her first response is to fight everything. Even if her rider doesn't need something fought, that's her first instinct. She probably means well, even if she isn't very good at putting anything into words. She will fly off the handle at any slight, even if it is her fault. She needs someone who is good at putting her in her place and helping her deal with the wild swings from fight to more fighting and anger.

Voice: Saikoth, when she does speak, has the voice like a deep bellow. It is low and hollow.

Why me?: Saikoth is not a gold, and not anywhere near it, but she feels that Lennamarine needs her power and her strength. And she's not taking 'no' for an answer.

THISTLE
Image

BASICS

NAME: Thistle
BIRTHDATE Late Winter 2763
AGE: 8 as of Early Fall 2771

APPEARANCE
COLOR: Green
HEX CODE: #B4D7BF
FULL APPEARANCE: Thistle is a delicate and pretty firelizard. Her body is a pale olive-green, shading into sea-ice white at the edges of her wingsails and along her spine, and with darker tail-tips. A heart-shaped marking on the inside of her left wingsail, in the crook of the wing, is almost purplish, and earned the flit her name.

PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: Cheerful and pleasant, Thistle tries hard to please, but is not particularly good at things like "remembering." She is prone to getting distracted in the middle of a task, whether by food, pretty objects, or small flying insects, and will therefore never make a good messenger. She is, however, a fun and playful pet, and loves to be oiled and praised, and serves quite well as an ornament.
