FULL APPEARANCE:
Tall, slender, and elegant, Morticia's pale skin is striking against her black hair and dark slanting eyes, with high-arching eyebrows only enhancing the effect. She enhances the paleness of her skin with cosmetics - easily made in the Healer's stillroom, with just an added ingredient or two from the usual salves and balms - and the redness of her lips, as well.
Morticia dresses to enhance her striking looks. She wears black almost exclusively, with even her riding leathers dyed that colour; any embroidery and all her jewelry is silver, and she has a fondness for blood-red rubies. Left to her own devices her outfits tend to long black dresses best described as 'slinky', stylish in a style all their own with flowing sleeves and trains.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
'Morbid' doesn't quite begin to describe Morticia. Nor does 'drawn to the unusual'. She has a fondness for the macabre and actively works against fitting in with those around her, instead taking the attitude that she is who she is and the world can learn to cope. If someone brings her flowers she'll take great care to snip the blooms and display the stems, finding beauty where others see nothing of the sort. This often unnerves and upsets those who aren't expecting that sort of attitude - and even some who are - and it doesn't really help her when it comes to dealing with the overwhelming majority of people.
Healer's Wing, however, are not the overwhelming majority of people. They see another side entirely of Morticia; warm and generous, Morticia will spend everything she has to look after her people, and her morals and values aren't quite aligned with those of most so she doesn't judge in the same way that others often do. She cares nothing for what a person looks like or what colour hide their bondmate has; she judges people by their deeds, and she values compassion and the willingness to stand up for convictions.
Over the years, Morticia has gained a reputation for being responsible, a good leader and someone who can be trusted with delegated tasks. A specialist in palliative care and adept at working with those who've suffered life-changing injuries, and an acknowledged expert in the stillroom, she's grown into someone who most of the Weyr may not understand but do trust as a Healer and as a leader, especially when it comes to keeping a level head in a crisis.
She may not be willing to pretend to normalcy, but Morticia is calm and competent, especially when faced with a crisis, and she's intensely loyal. She's utterly loyal to her dragon, her Weyr, her wing, her craft, and to the man she fell head over heels in love with when she laid eyes on him. All in all, despite and thanks to her attitudes to life and death and the beautiful spaces between, she lives life to the fullest and helps others do the same.
HISTORY
FAMILY: Hester of blue Vipath, F'rump of green Evith, both deceased; two children, available.
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: Gomez of blue Gomezsk
BIRTHPLACE: High Reaches Weyr
HISTORY:
Morticia, daughter of Hester and F'rump, was always an oddity. Growing up in the creche at High Reaches, a daughter of the lowest of the low when it came to dragonriders, she received no special attention or education - but she had a mind, and she wasn't afraid to use it. Studious and quick to learn, she was considered a cold fish by the others in the creche - but an unnerving cold fish, and one it was probably best not to cross.
At home with her own company, Morticia didn't mind her place outside the social circles. She wasn't interested in currying favour with future bronzeriders, nor impressing the children of the Lower Caverns; she had little time for the social games and jockeying for position in anything other than the academic sphere. The attention others paid to rank, she paid instead to learning, and partway into Candidacy - at the usual age for such things - she applied to the Healers for an Apprenticeship.
Life as an Apprentice Healer and Candidate gave her more to study and more access to books. Morticia rapidly became a favourite in the stillroom, having the patience to follow even complicated instructions with precision. She learned a great deal about the making of medicines and balms, salves and potions, and their application. She was also unafraid to spend time with the desperately wounded and the dying, tending the worst injuries with cool hands and a calm head, and helping those with life-altering injuries come to terms with their losses and find ways to go on.
Addamth hatched when Morticia was twenty-three; the mutated little green set the whispers flying around the sands, especially when she looked around at each and every candidate before choosing one. Morticia, irritated with the attitudes of some of the other Candidates, declared that the green was just darling and offered herself; Addamth - who had been looking for Morticia to start with - had found someone who wouldn't judge her for her appearance or her colour, but only for herself.
Morticia and Addamth finished Weyrlinghood as some of the lowest-ranked in their class, as appropriate for a greenpair of the day. Set apart by Addamth's physical attributes and Morticia's mindset, it mattered little to them; when they graduated it was into the Healer's wing, where once the mad scramble of the first few Threadfalls was over, Morticia continued to spend most of her time in the stillroom and helping those whose lives had been forever changed by injury or were fast coming to an end.
Golre's ambitions changed a great deal of that. The next few years saw more of the new injuries that were Threadscores, the eternal round of training accidents and then - horrifyingly - the results of active combat pitting dragonrider against dragonrider; the salves were flying from the stillroom as fast as the Healers could make them, and they were forever shorthanded with the injured and the dying to care for. When Golre's reign was ended there was still a lot to do, and it was only several years later, when things were back to 'normal' and she was over thirty turns old, that Morticia walked the tables to become a Journeyman - and the mother of two children by a Harper and then a Healer, two children surrendered to the creche but given time and attention by their mother between her duties.
The workload on the Healers remained steady; Threadfalls leading to more or fewer injuries but never none, wounded riders and dragons and whers needing to be returned to the Weyr where they could be tended, and the usual constant stream of accidents and illnesses and infections. Morticia learned to handle difficult situations and started to gain leadership experience, taking the lead among a few and then more until she was taking the lead among many.
Her personal life changed dramatically in the last Turn; an enterprising wherhandler from Semaca, come to discuss the southlands trading with the Reaches, caught her eye - and she caught his. She fell head over heels in love with him just as he fell head over heels in love with her, and the two are both inseparable and utterly sickening. Gomez of blue Gomezsk has effectively adopted Morticia's children as his own, the man spending almost as much time with them as with their mother, and the strange little family seems to be incredibly happy and entirely content to show it.
The latest development? Morticia's become the Wingsecond for the Healer's Wing, her skills and talents and training acknowledged. It leaves her less time for her weyrmate, but he seems to be entirely thrilled for her.
