HISTORY:
Ironwood had been born just three years after Golre and Gold Vizeth had become the Senior Weyrwoman. His parents were wher candidates and were not treated like many dragonriders they knew. His mother had been encouraged to rebond her wher, but she refused. His parents couldn't care less about Golre treating the dragonriders badly, though Ironwood found this to be unjust as a child.
Ironwood had been an adventurous child growing up. He loved to explore the area and mountains. One day, though, he had fallen and ended up heaving scarring his arm and right side of his body. While he did recover, the scars have lasted throughout the years.
At the age of fifteen, he signed up to be a candidate. It was expected of him, especially by his parents. He knew the risks that were associated with being a High Reaches candidate, but he did not seem to care. He was treated the same as the other candidates, treated like dirt and often abused by the older candidates.
However, his resolve remained hardened and, after two years had passed, he had signed up to be a wher candidate. He knew perfectly well that was what he wanted to do. The dragonrider candidates were treated badly, often by their superiors.
Wher candidates had it considerably easier. Dragonrider candidates were often kidnapped, abused and left to live in fear of 'failing to impress a nonshiny dragon'. This was another injustice that Ironwood saw, deciding it would be one of the things changed if he got power.
In 2761, Golre had declared war on Fort Weyr and several of the chromatic dragonriders left in response. That was a hard time for the Weyr, as dragons were often the first line of defense and the whers had to step up as a result. Ironwood was unable to do much, due to him being a candidate still. He was twenty-five at the time, twenty-six when Golre had been killed.
Ironwood felt.. mad that he couldn't help rebuild the Weyr, as he did not have a wher yet. While others continued their studies, he was filled with a new found passion. He wanted to help High Reaches in anyway he could.
Slowly, as time went on, High Reaches Weyr had changed for the better. There was now a council that helped take care of the political decisions. Ironwood had still not impressed, but he was not concerned. He knew fully well that some candidates never impressed and, as he was a wher candidate, he had a lot more time. Besides, it was the clutchmother who decided who chose candidates to give eggs to. He hadn't been chosen yet, but he would one day.
A terrifying white wher had hatched from the egg Ironwood had bought, having gone to a gather and found their egg all alone while others had taken them. When the wher peered into his eyes, they quietly were impressed, though they shared no feelings of love or friendliness to the other.
Since then, they have worked side by side, even if they just see the other as a needs to an end.
