FULL APPEARANCE:
Standing seven feet tall, this man is as thin as the proverbial rake. The sharp angles of his pale-skinned face accentuate large eyes of cold, pale blue, and high cheekbones and hollow cheeks lend him a brooding air. His hair is platinum blond with receding temples, kept short enough to stand straight up. The rest of his body follows the elongated, slender and angular rule; his limbs are long, his fingers are dexterous, and there's little spare fat on him.
Always dressed neatly and usually in black riding leathers over plain linens, Kiobelin definitely has a sense of style, even if that style tends towards 'leather' and 'black-and-white'. His calf-high boots and his leathers have panels of extra-thick and extra-tough leather where they don't need to be flexible, and some padding and black decorative stitching to them rather than being completely utilitarian - although the sharp-eyed might notice that the decorative stitching isn't entirely decorative, suggesting that there's more than just the visible beltknife secreted about Kiobelin's person.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
Kiobelin is a cold and calculating sort of person. His attitude to life can be summed up as ‘risk and reward’; he never does anything for just one reason, and he rarely wastes energy on things that he considers inconsequential. As a result, he’s considered a cold fish by most of the weyr - or at least the ones who don’t understand the truth of him.
Kiobelin is very much in tune with his instincts and very quick on the uptake, adapts to changing situations fast, and is very good at positioning himself to best advantage in any given situation. Living so very much in the moment, however, means he has very little capacity for planning. It also means that the past is something to learn from, but otherwise generally dismissed. He understands that not everyone is the same way, but he considers it an advantage to be mostly dealing with what is, rather than what was or what might be, especially with the sort of life he leads. He's generally content to be underestimated by those who haven't the wit to realise how dangerous he can be.
Kiobelin has a code of honour (of sorts); he takes care to keep the innocent out of things where possible, will actively protect children, and do everything in his power to fight Thread. He typically treats people the way they treat him; deal with him with respect and he'll be respectful in turn, and he does like it when people look up to him as a mentor. The biggest part of his code, however, demands loyalty towards whoever he thinks has the right to command him, and the person who he believes is in charge will have to work hard to lose that loyalty. He doesn't need to plan if there's someone to do the planning for him, after all, and he can adapt to - and justify - a great deal.
It’s impossible to mention Kiobelin’s personality without involving Obelisk. Overall the bond between the two is so tight it’s not entirely clear where the human’s thoughts end and the wher’s begin. They’ll sometimes finish each others’ sentences, or one will move with absolute confidence in the other moving as well; they have a truly rare awareness of each other.
HISTORY
FAMILY: A'raen of Bronze Allordrith (father, deceased), Kioborin of green Moridath (mother)
Various half-siblings including Yvaen and Nova
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: N/A
BIRTHPLACE: High Reaches Weyr
HISTORY:
Born at the Weyr thanks to flightlust and packed off to the creche at the first opportunity, Kiobelin had a normal Weyr childhood. He quickly got a name for being funny, and for revelling in being the centre of attention. With a mere greenrider for a mother and a father who didn’t acknowledge him, he found the best way to be the centre of attention without getting punished for it was by being the class clown - wherever there was a prank or someone to be humiliated, he was there to make sure that people were laughing with him rather than at him. Younger than most of his half-siblings, he saw little of them, but knew they existed.
Passing into Candidacy with the others when he came of age, he was… not the best candidate. Peer pressure was an imperative, and he didn’t so much learn from his mistakes as find whole new mistakes to make, especially with the changes in regime to throw everything into chaos and send him even further adrift. He parted ways with Candidacy - he didn’t get ejected, he quit! - and sulked off to High Reaches Hold where he took up with the guards. He learned from them, and what he was learning suited him well enough that he was willing to undergo the discipline the Hold's guards demanded.
Still smarting at having been rejected as a candidate, he bought himself a wher egg at a gather shortly after his eighteenth birthday. That egg hatched a stunning blue; Kiobelin blooded the little beast, and there was a meeting of minds. The little wher looked to be the steadying influence Kiobelin had needed, but to the few people who knew him well the young man’s whole self had shifted. Kiobelisk went from class clown to calm and reserved as the bond with Obelisk set in deeper and deeper, and the peer pressure he’d never been able to resist was no longer even a concern. Instead he was one half of a new whole, but that whole was only half-human. Kiobelin’s risk-and-reward mentality met with Obelisk’s need for balance and they blended to become something almost entirely cold and calculating, the sort of pair who know what they want out of life and will take any step towards the right direction to get it.
They left the Hold behind - there wasn't much opportunity there, after all, and now that Kiobelin had a wher he had enough status to be noticed. The first step towards what they wanted, after bonding, was to serve Wherlinghood at the Weyr, and another step was joining Majima’s criminal enterprises, not least because a very intimidating wherpair with training as fighters can be very useful, and Majima gives nice things to useful people. Now that Obelisk is fully grown and the bluepair are fully trained as fighters, they have hopes of rising in the criminal mastermind's organisation. They don't want to take it over - perish the thought! - but they like having both respect and nice things, and Majima offers a path to both.
