FULL APPEARANCE: Ennis is an extremely delicate looking young woman, with dainty facial features and long, slender limbs and very little body fat. She often wears a rather intense expression, and when she speaks, it is with a soft, serious-sounding voice. She wears her red hair short, just past her ears. She clearly cuts it herself, but somehow that works for her. Ennis tends to dress in more formal-looking menswear and prefers darker colors for day-to-day wear. She clearly takes very good care of her clothes.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: Ennis sometimes struggles with being a person. So much of her life was determined based on what she could do for others that she has difficulty accepting that she doesn’t need to be useful for people to want her around. She’s also not used to people taking what she wants into consideration, so she tries to resist having strong opinions to avoid being disappointed. As a result, she tends to come across as quiet, reserved, and sort of a doormat. She’s not great at picking up on subtext or reading between the lines, and non-platonic dynamics are extremely confusing to her. She prefers to fall back on hard facts and figures when the business of other people’s emotions gets too overwhelming for her.
Due to a sheltered upbringing, she can be naive about some things, and unclear on extremely basic things about life despite being exceptionally well-versed in areas of math and natural sciences. She doesn’t have great instincts about other people, and relies on the instincts of those she trusts instead.
Under all that, though, Ennis is extremely loyal and passionate, loving people with her whole heart. She has a strong sense of right and wrong that she’s slowly learning to express, and when she decides something it can be very difficult to dissuade her of that decision, even if she won’t openly fight about it. One thing she will never tolerate is when someone is made to feel like they have no choice - that was almost her entire life, and she would never wish it on anyone. She is not afraid to get physical to protect herself and her loved ones, and is decisive and efficient in a crisis.

The only family Ennis has ever known was an eccentric, paranoid recluse of a man named Szilard and his green wher Szilsk. The old farmcrafter was obsessed with trying to find a combination of plants that would produce a medicinal cure-all. While he did manage to improve slightly on a few known herbal remedies, most of his results were simply foul-smelling sludges or tinctures that caused stomach cramps. Nonetheless, he was very jealous of his research, living as far from other people as possible to keep them from stealing it.
For the first decade and a half of her life, Ennis only ever interacted with Szilard and Szilsk. Szilsk was as close as Ennis got to a maternal figure, although the wher wasn’t particularly affectionate. As a result, Ennis never learned basic social skills, Szilard instead treating her as a research assistant, secretary, and maid. So despite being uncertain around people, she is an incredibly intelligent, well-educated woman with many practical skills.
In her late teens, Szilard began to develop health issues that made it difficult for him to travel to the nearest larger holds to get more food and supplies for his experiments, so for the first time in her life, Ennis was sent out among people. It was overwhelming, but in the best way, and she wandered around for a while simply enthralled. As she took in all of the people, a young man named Firo approached her on the rather thin excuse that she’d dropped a button. He offered to help her find everything she needed and get good prices, for which she was grateful.
From then on, he was her ambassador to the world outside of Szilard’s cottage, telling her about how most people had more than one parent, how some even had siblings, how most people’s days weren’t consumed with borderline unhinged research. She was very grateful to him, and that gratitude turned into an affection she wasn’t entirely sure what to do with.
It was thanks to Firo that Ennis realized she might’ve had siblings based on some of the boxes of clothes Szilard kept in the basement, but the most she could ever get out of him was a vague acknowledgement that she had had siblings once, though he never elaborated further. (Her family had all died of a pox when she had been quite young. She'd been sent to live with her grandfather Szilard when the first of them got sick to keep her safe. Szilard never told her of this, finding it too painful.)
For turns, she was able to keep Firo a secret from Szilard, but the old man did eventually find out about her dear friend, and when he did, Szilard himself went to the hold to tell Firo to leave Ennis alone. When Firo wouldn’t immediately bend to the old man’s will, pointing out that Ennis deserved to have more than one person in her life who loved her, Szilard attacked Firo. Firo defended himself, and in the scuffle Szilard’s head in the ground too hard. Many witnesses saw it and would happily attest that it was an accident, that Firo was acting in self-defense, that he shouldn’t be held responsible, but Ennis knew that would only matter for other humans. Szilsk would hunt Firo down and kill him for what he’d done, so Ennis managed to convince him to flee with her to the nearest Weyr - High Reaches - to beg for protection from the people and dragonkind there.
