FULL APPEARANCE:
Haspa is tall and muscular, with light sun-blotched skin that displays a few thin scars of little consequence -- mostly on the hands and arms, from minor training accidents. Their upper body is particularly well-developed, built up from years of dedicated shooting practice. A thin layer of dark stubble peppers their chin. Heavily-lidded eyes, arched brows, and a curved nose bestow a vaguely huntbird-like appearance. They favor dark-colored clothing made of leather and softish cloth, mostly form-fitting with some puff and flow in the limbs -- but nothing too floppy, lest it become obstructive. Haspa grooms themselves carefully. They walk quickly and with purpose, leaving a faint scent of spice and paper-dust in their wake. Their voice is light and mostly neutral, tinted by a slight feminine bias.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
Haspa has a passion for learning and rarely skips class. They are a hard worker, an ethic instilled by their upbringing. They have a good memory, especially for sounds, and a sharp sense of hearing. They like to stay aware of their surroundings, so they are always listening -- innately a multitasker.
Their undeniable competence gives them a sort of arrogant charm. They are extraverted and competitive, with a penchant for showing off. Haspa is oddly noble during a crisis, with a 'no-one left behind' attitude; though once the drama dies down, their magnanimity dries up with it. They are ultimately not very 'broody' or supportive, possessed of a terminally independent streak.
Haspa is a perfectionist. Their attitude tends toward smugness, which is seriously annoying when paired with their genuine intellect -- they'll take every chance to rub it in. They don't often care to address interpersonal wrongdoings. It can take a lot of arguing to get an apology out of Haspa -- they do feel guilty after upsetting someone, but it's like pulling teeth to get them to admit it. At times they are downright insufferable.
Haspa is quite brave against physical threats; their anxieties are more existential. They harbor a deep fear of failure, specifically criticism. Their instinctive reaction is toward fight, not flight, leading them to become impulsive when scared. They try their hardest to keep any mistake a secret, unwilling to ask for help. If their own competence cannot overcome something, headstrong Haspa will dig themselves down an inescapable hole until someone forces them to stop. Despite their own claims of 'perfect' rationality, they are in practice very emotionally-driven.
Haspa's main hobby is, of course, reading. Their other pastime is archery, and after years of practice they are a decent shot. It's their favorite part of the Candidate self-defense curriculum -- watch out!
HISTORY
FAMILY:
Mother: Espa, Beastherder (living)
Father: Hathon, Kitchens staff (living)
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: N/A
BIRTHPLACE: Telgar Weyr
HISTORY:
Neither of Haspa's parents had the potential to become riders. Their mother, Espa, was a Holder who arrived at the Weyr seeking employment. Their father, Hathon, was Weyrbred but never manifested the potential to Stand. Haspa's parents were doting enough, but at times too strict. The two came from similar backgrounds, where their own parents normalized working without complaint. Too often, inability to perform was mistaken as unwillingness and therefore punished. They were proud people who constantly pushed Haspa to elevate themselves, and they became desperate to please them. When they were Searched at the tender age of 15, the family rejoiced.
Haspa found Candidacy to be very engaging, and developed a special love for literature. Personal goals swiftly crystallized within the first few years of their schooling. First, they wanted to honor and protect their family. Next, a dragon could make a better field research partner than a human -- they were psychic, strong, and gifted with flight. Finally, they craved the fellowship of these intelligent beings who seemed to lack complicated human expectations -- dragons were fiercely protective of their riders no matter what kind of people they were, 'good' or 'bad'. A dragon surely wouldn't tally up their every mistake the way the humans around them, even their own parents, did. Haspa secretly yearned for acceptance.
However, they would be left Standing so many times. They began to doubt if they truly had the potential, becoming frustrated and disillusioned. Some months into their 22nd Turn, they decided to make a radical change in pursuit of their goal. If Telgar's dragonets didn't want them, maybe some other Weyr's would. Dragons seemed to prefer fresh blood. They kissed their parents goodbye, over-confidently declaring that they'd soon be visiting on the back of their very own dragon, and applied for transfer to High Reaches. They are currently Turns into their transferred Candidacy and still unbonded, anxiety growing with every pass.
