Saruhiko is a slim, lanky young man standing at an average 5’11. While not particularly strong, he's long and limber, especially in his hands. His face is narrow with an angular jaw. He keeps his black hair short and it tends to fall messily in his face. He wears rectangular glasses that frame bright blue eyes. He has a burn on the upper left side of his chest. He tends to wear whatever is comfortable and practical, even during gathers unless forced into something fancy. He's been told he has a resting bitch face, to which he'll roll his eyes dismissively.

At first glance, Saruhiko comes across as a somewhat lazy and arrogant individual. He is dismissive of things and people who don’t interest him, but when he finds something that catches his attention he focuses on it with an intense, single mindedness until his task is done. When his interest is piqued, he can complete a task thoroughly and in record time. He’s quite brilliant, able to perform complicated math in his head and remember minor details that others wouldn’t give a second thought to. When given a task, he always looks for the fastest and easiest way to complete it, even if must go through a brick wall to do it. Rote and routine chores and days bore him to tears leading him to searching for something dangerous or against the rules for a quick thrill.
Deep down Saruhiko is a kindhearted person, but he has trouble expressing this due to his early upbringing. He finds many social activities his peers engage in childish and a waste of time while being envious at how easily they can get along together. He has trouble trusting people and only has a couple of friends he's willing to rely on. He struggles, but he wants to be able to understand 'teamwork' someday.

Niki and Kisa were a case study of two young people who weren't meant to be parents. They seemed like the perfect couple at first, inseparable even when Niki was working the fields. Every moment Niki wasn't working the pair spent in each other's company both in the hold and exploring outside. They became close, and soon enough Kisa fell pregnant, much to her chagrin. Pregnancy quickly limited what she could do; gone were the afternoons climbing trees and wading across streams as first the morning sickness then the growing child hindered her, and Niki seemed completely disinterested in the idea of a child. After the longest nine months of her life, Kisa gave birth to a healthy baby boy. As soon as she could, she left, having realized she wasn't ready to be tied down by a man or a baby.
Unfortunately for little Saruhiko, his father blamed him for the love of his life running off. As soon as Saruhiko was weaned off a wet nurse, Niki left the boy to his own devices, preferring to go out drinking after working the fields. He took every opportunity to belittle his son, dismissing any small achievement as worthless. Without being shown how to love and interact with others by his father, Saruhiko struggled to make friends with the other children of the hold. He became close with another boy, Misaki, who was bullied for his height and the two became inseparable, occasionally joined by Saruhiko's cousin Aya.
Niki died when Saruhiko was eleven, likely due to his overindulgence of alcohol. Saruhiko was neither sad or happy. He simply shrugged and asked where he was going to live. Misaki was the first to volunteer his home (without asking his parents), but Aya's family took the boy in. Things got a little better after Niki's death. Saruhiko, Misaki, and Aya mostly stuck to themselves, but they managed to become somewhat more friendly with the other hold children when they weren't involved with chores. Saruhiko's fondness for animals had led him to apprentice with the hold's beastmaster when he turned thirteen, though he wouldn't advance beyond apprentice.
Saruhiko was sixteen a rider came from High Reaches on Search. Eager to escape the often mundane care of animals and hold life in general, he presented himself to the rider as did most of the eligible folk of the hold. He, Misaki, and Aya were chosen and decided to go to the Weyr for a new start and hopefully some excitement. Unfortunately for Saruhiko, he would be in for a bit of a wait as three turns passed without Impression. The monotony grated on him, but he was nothing if stubborn, so he would wait as long as he had too, he just wouldn't be happy about it.
