FULL APPEARANCE:
Hans a well groomed young man, very fastidiously groomed even when he’s out and about in the Weyr. He speaks very formally, doing his best to hide any sort of rural accent within his speaking patterns. However, he still doesn’t let himself seem too posh or overtly pompous. He acts down to earth and as approachable as possible, in order to gain connections with as many people as he can. While Hans isn’t the type to be the center of attention, that doesn’t mean he cannot work a crowd to his advantage.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
As someone who grew up in a large family, Hans is genuinely quite good with kids. Despite being the youngest, he has a compassion towards those younger than him. Had he not felt compelled to be a dragon rider, he would have gladly deigned to be a caregiver to children. He has a way with words, and can easily convince children and adult alike to listen to him and follow his advice to an extent. In fact, he just likes talking to people, being able to socialize is quite the treat for him.
He excels in all fields that he applies himself to, able to eventually pick up difficult concepts… or if not entirely pick up, fake his knowledge enough to get by. He has a great love of geography, and has longed to be able to see the world from high up, upon the back of a dragon. He has a great sense of duty to the Weyr he lives at, and knows better than to shake up the status quo under normal circumstances.
However…
Hans also has his less than shining qualities. What he desires is power and respect overall, and not getting them is something that will linger in his mind until he DOES get it. He has been picked on most of his life, specifically by his older brothers. Thankfully, he has learned to adapt, taking abuse with surprising grace until he can strike back. Hans also does his best to be adaptable, willing to fall back and give up on a prospect if it means his overall facade is maintained. While he does play a foolish, easily loving young man, he only does it to make those around him less guarded. Otherwise, he finds there is very little room in his heart for romantic love. He might be willing to open himself to those around him, if he finds their presence amusing or tolerable.
Intra-weyr politics is something he always has his ear to the ground for. While he feigns disinterest, he does always take notes, remembering names and faces as needed. He aligns himself a bit more strongly with traditionalists, but otherwise he doesn’t allow his views to be too obvious. Especially since he still holds a preference towards Golds and Bronzes.
In his wildest dreams, he sees himself atop a mighty Gold, commanding respect from those around him, ruling the Weyr with a fair but loved hand. But of course, there’s just no way that can happen. So he’s content with the power that a brown or a bronze might get him. Though thanks to his family’s track record of all Brown or Bronze Riders, he’s hoping for a brown.

BIRTHPLACE: Cothold not too far from High Reaches
HISTORY:
Hans was born in a noisy cothold.
With twelve older brothers, life was never boring. But it was rarely fun. Their father had instilled in the boys that they were supposed to be rough, tough, take what they want and have no mercy. Hans was often on the receiving end of many pranks from his brothers, save Lars, the third oldest.
Caleb, the eldest son, left as soon as he could for Telgar, thankfully preventing most of his cruelty from coming down on Hans’ head. That still left him with ten more brothers to torment him, Unfortunately. One of Hans’ earliest memories was Caleb returning on the back of a great big bronze dragon, so terrifying and big. Hans had no idea that this would set a precedent, a goal to strive for.
For years, Hans suffered under his brother’s cruel pranks, with only his mother and Lars to protect him. Eventually, even Lars had to leave, seeking out his own life as a Rider. But he promised Hans he’d return when he could, and spend time with him. Hans made it a point that day, as he watched his favorite brother leave, to go to High Reaches when he was of age.
Each and every single one of his brothers left one by one, save for Rudi and Runo, the twins who left together. They were either scouted, upon the recommendation of their elder brothers, or they simply left and traveled out to the Weyrs as soon as they were able to get a ride. All of them save for Lars left for Telgar and Benden. Each and every single one came home to visit with either a brown or a bronze, all strong and handsome as his brothers.
Their father was incredibly proud, and often hassled his remaining sons to get ready to leave when they could so they could get wonderful dragons of their own. His father even joked that he’d have his own army at this rate, a joke his brothers shared among each other. Not that they ever included Hans in these sorts of jokes.
Meanwhile, Hans was left to care for his mother while his father tended to their gardens and did what he could to trade and get supplies for them. Hans was often given the cold shoulder, and ignored by his father in favor of his wife.
Eventually, despite his desire to stay and tend to his mother, she begged him to leave. She didn’t care about her own health, she knew Hans was a bright young man, and had a bright future ahead. His father and herself would be fine, and she begged him not to take it the wrong way. She simply didn’t want him to languish under his father’s heel all his life…
Thankfully, he was able to understand her intent.
He expressed to his father on his 15th birthday that he wished to leave their home and join his brothers as riders. In a strange twist of behavior, his father was delighted, finally getting him out of the house. He even went out of his way to send Lars a letter so that he could pick his useless younger brother up, begging him to please take him to High Reaches… He even made some surprisingly supportive arguments, saying he was of age and would benefit from an older sibling there to help him when he inevitably failed. He would have sent him to the other Weyrs, but he was sure his wife would want to see her favorite son, regardless of how weak he could be.
Unfortunately, this wasn’t something Lars could decide on his own.
He had wrote back that he’d do his best to visit and try and convince his superiors that they should try and bring Hans in. But the actual act of Searching him wouldn’t actually happen until Hans was 19. Mostly because the one time Lars convinced a Searcher to go and seek out his brother, the dragon found him lacking and unworthy. It would be a long while before Hans was deemed worthy of being a Candidate by another Searchdragon.
It would be something that Hans would hold against Lars for years to come.
But like any good liar, he'd hide it as best as he could. No need to have a sour disposition when you had people to try and impress.
