FULL APPEARANCE:
Takharaine has fine, almost delicate features with a long, narrow face and rather large eyes that are such a dark brown they're almost black. Although his hair often looks a little tousled because of its natural waves, this is exactly how Takharaine wants it to look, and he takes great pains to keep it cut and styled exactly right. A little shorter than average and lightly built, Takharaine doesn't really stand out of the crowd... unless the crowd is a formal event or party, in which case, he'll be the best-dressed guy there. He likes his clothes to be well-fitting, neither too baggy nor too tight, and favours blues and greens, although he owns a wide variety of colours. He's almost obsessively clean and tidy. There is something almost deliberate about the way he moves, every action carefully considered, with and he's remarkably agile when the situation calls for it.

PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: It's hard to escape the feeling that Takharaine might be just a little bit spoiled. He's got all those nice clothes, not to mention a gold firelizard, and he's fastidiously to a point that seems excessive to many on Pern. He will do his chores, albeit grudgingly because he never really had to do them at home, but he absolutely must get clean afterwards. He's pretty vain about his appearance as well, so any event that requires him to get dressed up nicely will take several candlemarks to prepare for, and he can often be caught checking out his own reflection if he thinks nobody's looking. He is well-spoken and well-educated, if perhaps a little too inclined to show off his vocabulary at times. Yeah, he's definitely more privileged than many on Pern, and he seems a bit shallow.

Beneath the surface, however, Takharaine is deeper than he seems. He's aware that he had the luxury of a better education than most, so he doesn't hesitate to help his fellow candidates with their lessons if they need it and if they're open to it. While he won't make a special effort to get through to someone who absolutely doesn't want anything to do with him, anyone that seems open to his friendship will get it. He's generally a gentle person who's got a soft-spot for the underdogs, and although he won't confront a bully physically - he might get hurt! - he'll definitely find his own ways of dealing with them. Whether this rises to the point of Takharaine bullying the bullies is very much open to question!

Because the thing is that Takharaine has this inventive, mischievous streak that he's more than willing to turn against someone he feels deserves it. This is also how he acts up when he's bored, feeling ignored, or otherwise feels he needs to express himself in a way that words don't convey. There's nothing mean-spirited about it, at least not intentionally, and he never does something that could get someone physically hurt. But painting silly faces on glows? Doodling a dragon's tailfork on a sleeping bully's forehead? Moving furniture around? Putting way too much extra pepper in the soup? Yeah, he'll do these kind of things, and even if he didn't mean to upset anyone, sometimes they do get justifiably upset.

Knowing that others can get upset by his pranks isn't enough to make him stop doing them, though, and sometimes even encourages him, because Takharaine really doesn't like feeling ignored or overlooked. He feels like everybody always gets more attention than him, and sometimes that means he needs to do something that will make everyone notice him for once. Even the negative attention he gets from being told off is better than being completely ignored. Connected to this is the fact that he'll pull pranks when he's bored as well, which tends to happen when what he's supposed to be doing isn't interesting enough for him. For Takharaine, boring tasks are what happens when someone wants to get him out of the way so they can pay attention to others, and so boredom is a valid reason to act up.

On the other hand, this creative side of him can be put to good use: while he's not an amazing artist by any means, he enjoys it a lot, and since arriving at High Reaches Weyr, has been doing charcoal drawings of dragons, whers and firelizards on scraps of hide.

HISTORY
FAMILY:
  • Father: Tamerne (+34, Minor Holder)
  • Mother: Khaira (+33, Minor Holder)
  • Brother: Khairne (+8, Minor Holder)
  • Sister: Khamerna (+2, Minor Holder)
  • Brother: Tamairan (-2, Holdbrat)
  • Sister: Khaimera (-5, Holdbrat)
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: N/A
BIRTHPLACE: Minor Hold near High Reaches Hold
HISTORY: Born as the third child of five in a small but reasonably prosperous Hold, Takharaine never had the expectations placed on his older siblings, but nor was he the baby of the family. He settled somewhere in the middle, both cared for and deeply loved by his family, but usually not the centre of attention. There was always something important his oldest brother was doing, or his baby sister was having another tantrum. But Takharaine had everything else he could possibly desire, including a close friendship with Tamairan, the brother closest to him in age. They got into a lot of mischief together, mostly instigated by Takharaine whenever he was bored or fed up of his younger sister getting all the attention, but he still considered it his job to look out for his little brother.

When Takharaine was ten Turns old he discovered Tamairan was being bullied by another boy in the Hold, Nittan. At first he did what he'd been taught to do in such situations: tell an adult, in this instance, the Harper who taught the Hold's children. While this worked for a couple of weeks, before long Nittan was teasing Tamairan again. This cycle repeated a couple more times, before Takharaine decided it wasn't working and he needed to take matters into his own hands. Not violence, though. Takharaine knew better than that, and besides, Nittan was much bigger than him! Instead, he put his intelligence and mischievousness to good use: he 'borrowed' some dye from the Weaver's workshop, put it into a bowl, and put the bully's hands in it while he slept. Nittan's hands were bright pink by the morning! Unfortunately, he was also utterly distraught that he'd been humiliated that way.

Takharaine received a stern talking-to from the Harper, who revealed that Nittan's father had died recently, and Takharaine had made things worse. And he felt awful for that. He hadn't really meant to cause any harm, but... well, Nittan had been hurting Tamairan, and it had seemed like nobody was doing anything. He decided to make it up to Nittan by trying to be a friend to him. It didn't really work, as Nittan wanted nothing to do with him after that, but it made Takharaine more aware of the other children in the Hold, and he started looking out for those who needed friends or help with their lessons.

On occasions, this did provide him with some partners-in-crime for mischief - because one bad outcome with Nittan wasn't enough to change Takharaine's love of pranks. If anything, it cemented the idea that getting into trouble was a good way of actually being noticed, when following the rules just seemed to result in being ignored. Some of these pranks were even done to draw attention to other children that Takharaine felt needed it... but the vast majority of them were because Takharaine wanted the attention or wanted to not feel bored. And even when he was trying to help someone else, at least part of it was, "See? I'm helping! Notice me helping!"

It did kind of work. The family had a tradition of buying a firelizard egg for each child when they reached their fourteenth nameday, and in recognition of Takharaine's efforts to look out for other children in the Hold - perhaps the first time his parents had ever really noticed him doing something special - his parents acquired a fairly large egg. It wasn't Takharaine's parents who generally had to deal with his pranks, after all, so they never considered the trouble he was getting into. That task always fell to the various other people taking care of the Hold's children, so all his parents really noticed was Takharaine spending his time looking after others. The egg hatched into a little gold firelizard that Takharaine named Sparkles, and she immediately became the most spoiled firelizard ever.

A Searchrider from High Reaches Weyr came to the Hold when Takharaine was seventeen, and picked both Takharaine and his older sister Khamerna as potential candidates. Khamerna was already engaged to the oldest son of a neighbouring son, and so had to decline the Search, but for once, Takharaine's status as a middle child worked for him: he was eager to go to the Weyr and have the opportunity to Impress a dragon, and his parents were proud to have a child who could be a candidate, and maybe one day become a rider. So he accepted the offer, perhaps not entirely thinking through the reality of fighting Thread should he successfully Impress, but really, how many people had a chance to Impress a dragon? He felt a little bad about leaving behind Tamairan and the other children he looked out for, but... well, he really did want this. He wanted the chance to be more special than just the ignored middle child.

Khaliith
Image

BASICS

NAME: Khaliith (Kah-lee-th)
BIRTHDATE Early Summer 2772
AGE: Newborn as of Early Summer 2772

APPEARANCE
LENGTH: 50ft
HEIGHT: 12.5ft
WINGSPAN: 75ft
COLOR: Brown
HEX CODE: #a96d5a
FULL APPEARANCE:
On the larger side for a brown, Khaliith is sleek and lean rather than bulky, with narrow wings and a strong, square jaw. He'll grow into a well-balanced, capable threadfighter. His hide is a warm, slightly reddish brown, with a base that isn't quite one color but shifts from dark to light like ripples on the water. His chest bears a distinctive marking that resembles the sun and its rays, in a paler, more golden brown. His wings are marked with the same color, with markings that resemble antlers or the roots of a tree, depending on how you look at them.

PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
A charming and seemingly easygoing dragon, Khaliith seems like a dragon who would rather let others do the work for him, approaching the world in what seems to be a rather idealistic and nonchalant attitude. However, he is an incredibly clever dragon, one who picks his words carefully, knowing when to charm and when to be firm with someone. He's the type of dragon to suggest giving a rival food poisoning just to rile them up so they make mistakes. He is a dragon who firmly believes that it doesn't matter what color your dragon or wher is, everyone should be judged on their own abilities. He is almost the perfect embodiment of High Reaches' ideal.

To his rider, Khaliith is hardly so secretive. He keeps them close, closer than their enemies. It's best they stick together. He is not above teasing them, poking fun at them and enjoying their reaction. He is not malicious, never to them. Khaliith can be swift and ruthless if someone tries to harm his rider, and he is not one to be pushed around or underestimated. He's a dragon who finds violence to be the last resort, and prefers diplomacy first.

Voice: Khaliith's voice is masculine, but charming and very easy to listen to. It is easy to tell when he's upset or angry, as his voice gets low.

Why Me?: Khaliith may end up being a partner in crime, but at the same time he's pretty grounded and realistic. This could be a lot of fun.

SPARKLES
Image

BASICS

NAME: Sparkles
BIRTHDATE Mid summer 2768
AGE: 3 as of fall 2771

APPEARANCE
COLOR: Gold
FULL APPEARANCE: A little on the smaller side of average for a gold firelizard, Sparkles looks like she should be more dainty than she actually is. But in reality she always seems to have a leg, wing or tail in a position that's really unhelpful: it's not unusual for Takharaine to get a face-full of wing while she's perched on his shoulder. Her hide is mostly an orange-gold in colour, with lighter yellow swirls across her body, mostly visible on her wings. Her head, paws, and tail tip are all dipped in the same light gold, looking like she's managed to dip herself in paint. Sparkles also often has a colourful ribbon tied in a bow around her neck, just because Takharaine thinks it makes her look pretty.

PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: Sparkles is a spoiled little princess of a firelizard, who is accustomed to getting whatever she wants from her pet human - and she really is convinced that's what the relationship between them is. She squeaks or chirps, and Takharaine gives her what she wants. Or that's the theory, anyway. The reality is her demands are so vague and inscrutable that it's a matter of guesswork to figure out what she really wants, and she loses interest in items that aren't delivered quickly enough. Sparkles is pretty clumsy and is constantly knocking things off tables by accident, or is completely oblivious to the fact that her wing in Takharaine's face is not terribly helpful. Still, she's quite an affectionate firelizard who loves to be groomed and pampered, which is probably why she puts up with having colourful ribbons tied to her.
