Hitoshi is a tall young man with a fair bit of muscle, but is not bulky by any means. He has messy black hair that sticks up in large, wild tufts. His eyes are a dark blue. His default expression is one of extreme boredom, even if he’s feeling otherwise. He tries not to stand out too much, so his clothing tends to be more on the plain side, even his Gather best.

While stoic tends to be Hitoshi’s default, he does show more emotions than his indifferent mask may initially suggest. Although he tends to be reserved and quiet, Hitoshi is fully capable of striking up a conversation with just about anyone. Still, he tends to hold people at arm's length under the guise of not wanting or needing friends, but in truth he's lonely. He doesn't fully understand friendship or what makes someone a true friend, and his fear of being hurt due to a poor choice of friends keeps him from fully reaching out. He tends to rub the back of his neck on the rare occasions he’s flustered. He’s straightforward and doesn’t mince words for the most part, but he has a clever mind and clever tongue when he needs it. He's blunt and more than happy to call people out when they deserve it with all the snark he can muster, though he often doesn't stop to think of the consequences of what he says.
Hitoshi aspires to be someone and not just another face in the crowd. He’s never gone out of his way to be anti-social, but true friendliness never seemed to come to him. As one of many weyrbrats growing up in the creche, he never felt like there was anything special about him and lacks in self confidence. He wants to change that, though, whether by Impressing a dragon or, failing that, taking up a craft and making a name for himself. He’s almost sure there’s something great in him, he may just need help finding it. He looks down on those he perceives as having natural talent, often categorizing them as spoiled brats who get by on natural gifts rather than hard work and experience.
He is extremely fond of animals, felines especially, and is easily distracted by them, occasionally making him tardy to lessons when he stops to pet them. He doesn't take kindly to people who harm animals and will make a stink and a half about it.

Hitoshi never did meet his birth parents; he was sent right to the creche when he was born and stayed there until he was of age. It never bothered him much, though. His family was in the creche, found as it was, and he never lacked for anything he needed. Still, he often felt overshadowed by the other children, for as many as there were there wasn’t a lot of individual attention afforded to him. Add in a war going on for much of the first half of his life, and Hitoshi often felt like a shadow about the creche.
By the time the war ended and Golre fell, he’d made the promise to himself that he was going to make something of himself to stand out from the crowd. This proved difficult as while he found conversation easy, being truly friendly was a bit more out of his depth. He tried, though, doing his best to be more outgoing, but that just wasn’t who he was. Still, he didn’t stop trying, especially when he decided to stand as a candidate at fifteen. The turns came and went, though, and no dragon came. He began to get discouraged out of impatience, but he found an unlikely mentor in Semaca. He'd transferred for a Gold clutch, and in the weeks leading up to the Hatching, he became close with Shouta, having found something of a kindred spirit in the Brownrider. Between the gloomy man and his friends Hizashi and B'ro, Hitoshi found mentors in the three. He chose to return to High Reaches after the hatching, though, as he wasn't fond of the more 'rugged' environment Semaca provided.
