MIGUEL
"The more I learn, the more I see
The less the world impassions me
The hungry heart, the roving eye
Have come to rest, do not apply
The frantic chase, the crazy ride
The thrill has gone, I step aside"
--Without Question by Elton John

Miguel has straight blond hair that he wears slightly shorter than shoulder length. He has bushy eyebrows, a nose with a wide bridge, a full beard and thin mustache that he styles very particularly. He has broad shoulders and chest, with narrower hips, a build he emphasizes further by wearing loose, slightly oversized shirts and tighter pants. He wears bright colors to make up for the fact that his clothes are older, though well cared for.
Miguel is very comfortable in his own skin, often making exaggerated expressions to get a laugh, or otherwise smiling. He can frequently seen with his lute. He's naturally athletic, his motions having the fluidity of a born performer.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
Miguel loves to entertain. He loves to be the reason people smile, and is always on the lookout for a bright side to any situation, no matter how grim it seems. It can come across as a little childish or naïve, but Miguel prefers to see it as a love of life and a thirst for adventure. He tends to run when things look dicey, but will stand and fight if he feels like there's no other choice or someone he cares about needs protecting (and can't be convinced to run away too). He falls in love hard and fast, with places as well as people, and while he's something of a con artist, he would never knowingly bring anyone to harm or part someone from something that they actually needed to survive or else had significant emotional value to them.
He's a talented liar, but only in the short term, as he's bad at keeping track of the details and will often give himself away before too long. He struggles with sitting still, and would rather leave things like plans to other people. He doesn't think he's much of an ideas man, nor that he has anything resembling leadership qualities, but he's definitely selling himself short in that regard. He's adaptable, good at thinking on his feet, and isn't afraid to rope in others to help out when he isn't enough to get the job done alone.
Unfortunately for Miguel, he assumes that just because he's close to someone, it means they always know what he's feeling. He often forgets to tell people what he wants from them or how he feels about them because he simply assumes they already know. When they inevitably disappoint him (because they cannot, in fact, read his mind) he will sulk, getting snippy with them and deliberately trying to pick a fight, refusing to tell them why he is angry with them, which only exacerbates the problem further.
HISTORY
FAMILY:
Parents - Southern Boll Holders
Chosen family - Tulio
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: Officially none, but he considers Tulio his partner
BIRTHPLACE: Southern Boll
HISTORY:
Miguel was born to a pair of holdfolk in Southern Boll. He was a semi-feral child, running wild in the streets the moment his mother's back was turned. Honestly, the only reason he was even willing to sit still long enough to learn to read and add was because he wanted to hear the Harpers play their songs. He's always had a fascination with music as well as a good ear for it, and while he didn't have the patience to get any kind of formal musical education, he taught himself to play the lute and can passably recreate a song if he's heard it often enough.
In his late teens, Miguel met Tulio. He found him brilliant, charming, and absolutely captivating. Miguel had always longed for adventure, hating the idea of being stuck into the rut of day-to-day life he saw for his parents, so he and Tulio ran away to join a wandering caravan. They hopped from major hold to major hold, from caravan to caravan, the only constants in their lives being each other. It was exciting and wonderful, even if sometimes they couldn't afford to eat that night. They slowly learned how to work effective scams together, and while they both took any and every opportunity to flirt, Miguel understood that was just part of the con, that it didn't really mean anything. One of their most daring scams resulting in them making off with several eggs from a firelizard clutch, the largest score they'd ever made. They managed to sell most of the eggs on the sly on the far side of town from where they'd stolen the eggs, except for the one Miguel kept for them. He bonded to the little creature, naming it Altivo, but he really considered it both their flit.
One day, while they were in High Reaches' territory, they encountered a Search dragon at one of the mid-sized holds who told them they'd make good riders. Miguel had been prepared to refuse the offer out of hand; after all, everyone knew riders were sticks-in-the-mud, that their days were as repetitive as everyone else's except for the more regular threat of death. But Tulio was intrigued. After all, he explained, Weyrs were positively overflowing with resources that they could run off with before anyone even noticed they were gone. And if either of them actually managed to impress to a dragon? Well, no one could take that away from them, and they'd be able to get away with so much more with a dragon lending them credibility. It had seemed like an absolutely brilliant idea at the time, which was why Miguel had happily agreed to it. Now, though, after a few months of seeing what life is actually like in a Weyr, getting to know the people and the dragons...well, he kinda thinks he might actually like to stay. But he'll avoid telling Tulio that for as long as he can. Hopefully he can come to love the place on his own too.
