- With dark skin, hair, and eyes, Melosa paints a striking picture. She wears her short hair in braids and curls. She has a broad nose, full lips, and an easy smile that is starting to put very fine creases at the corners of her eyes. Melosa's cheeks are full and round. Her ears are pierced just once and she likes to wear hoops or semi-precious stone drops. She stands at five feet ten inches in height with a perfectly average build. She loves skirts and dresses and she wears bright, playful colors. Her skirts are frequently pleated and very full, good for spinning and twirling. Melosa is very child-oriented and flirts the line between fun and functional.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
- Melosa adores children. They are the future of the Weyr and the most valuable asset that the Weyr has. She is loyal to the Weyr and wants what is best for it, and she is dedicated to serving the Weyr in what she determines to be the best possible way. So far that's been standing a few turns as a candidate and in the creche, but in the future ... who knows? She is open to the possibility of serving elsewhere.
A respectful individual, Melosa believes in the chain of command. She doesn't really mind the changing political air around her, although she does like that things are becoming more stable and better for the everyman. She fancies if she'd become a rider she would have probably gotten a Chromatic dragon - as most people do - and so she likes the current direction of the Weyr in being far less colorist. It's better for the children in her care.
She is compassionate and courageous and wants the best for her children and the other children under her care. Melosa has integrity. She believes in the Weyr and its future and wants to do her best to support the Weyr and its children. She holds firm to her beliefs in this and all matters and cannot be swayed from her support of her home Weyr. Even in its worst times, Melosa was a loyal and honest part of the Weyr structure, fitting in where she felt she could do the most good.
Tending to get attached to the children in her care, Melosa might as well have the whole Weyr as her offspring and not just four children with another on the way. She can be a little clingy and heavy-handed as she tries to guide her charges into the best possible lives for them - for their good and the good of the Weyr.
When it comes to love, Melosa doesn't believe in exclusivity. She draws the line at actually sharing quarters, and she's clear from the beginning that there are other people in her life. She'll even tell you who and for how long and it's up to you to deal with it or leave. At the same time, she doesn't like one-night stands. She only sleeps with people she has a relationship with, and everything is open and honest. That's what matters to her.
Melosa is a perfectionist. Everything has to be just so in order to please her. This is a hard quality to have in the creche, where life is chaos, but Melosa manages. She tries to make everything work out like she thinks that it should, sometimes pushing children toward the paths she thinks they are best suited for. Arranging things the way that she thinks they should be is a bad habit of hers, and she has made no effort to correct the behavior.
As a result of her perfectionism, Melosa can be hypercritical - both of herself and of others. She sees the smallest fault as insurmountable and frequently makes mountains out of molehills. While she tries not to discourage the children, she can be found to correct them ‘for their own good’ and she is far harder on adults. Adults have had time to work out their flaws; children are still malleable, still growing. She believes in the ultimate goodness of children but is pretty sure that adults can just be jerks who have lost out on their chances to be good and productive people.

HISTORY:
- TW: MENTIONS OF WAR, PLAGUE, AND OTHER DEATHS; PREGNANCY AND UNCERTAIN PATERNITY
The middle child of two weyrfolk at High Reaches Weyr, Melosa was four when the signs showed that Thread was going to return and the Interval War ended. She was still young when the Tenth Pass officially began, and only nine ... still too young to stand for a dragon, although she thought that she must in order to help protect the Weyr and the holds beholden to it.
When she was fifteen Melosa signed up to be a candidate out of a sense of duty; however, when she was twenty-one she stepped away from that to work in the creche when Golre declared High Reaches the Peacekeepers and people started fleeing to Telgar and Fort. It was an interesting time, with garnets and mutations hatching and women Impressing bronze. Maybe Melosa should have stayed in her position of candidate longer ... maybe she would have Impressed. However, Melosa found herself to be perfectly happy in her new position in the creche and never looked back.
About the same time, she Impressed a flit. And not just any firelizard - one of the new garnet flits. Melosa named her Berry Bandit because of the darker 'mask' around the flitter's eyes. It was amazing how helpful the little flit could be.
Being in the creche allowed her to keep her head down during the time that High Reaches declared war on Fort; that never would have happened if she'd been a dragonrider. As others High Reaches suffered serious losses both to death and to riders simply fleeing the Weyr, Melosa considered the fact that she had not Impressed to be a good thing. She was overlooked in the current political climate and she did all that she could to prepare the children of the Weyr for uncertain futures.
She was still young when Golre and Vizeth were killed, and High Reaches changed leadership to allow chromatic dragonriders to gain control of the Weyr. It lead to happier times, and more stability among the riders. Melosa worried less about the future of the children under her care.
When she was twenty-four, Melosa gave birth to her first child, a daughter named Melicia. Melosa was happy with her child, although she felt no need to raise her outside of the creche. She sees a great deal of her daughter.
The plague rips through Pern as mutations continue to hatch and elections are held to form a new Weyr Council at High Reaches. Melosa's second daughter, Melona, is born, followed by two sons, Melran and Merrin. The political climate is never completely stable, which makes Melosa somewhat nervous about the future of the children under her care, including her own. However, things are much better than they were under the tyrant Gold.
She was inundated with new charges as a mudslide hit High Reaches Hold and the Weyr became crowded with refugees, and then when rescued Holdless joined the Weyr. Around the same time as the latter happened, Melosa discovered she was pregnant for the fifth time.
She isn't entirely sure which of her lovers is the father of the child she's currently pregnant with. She never is, though, and it doesn't bother her. She welcomes all of her lovers to help parent her children and loves them all the same. She's looking forward to having her fifth child this fall ... but at the same time, she's considering her own future. Does she want to stay a creche worker, or does she want something more in life? More influential ... just more.
Not that Melosa isn't happy where she is! But she's considering putting her name forward for a higher position in the Weyr, where she can do more than just oversee the children growing up in High Reaches. She feels good about the future of the Weyr now that they have a more reasonable and rational leadership, and so maybe she can go forth herself and watch over more of the Weyr.
