FULL APPEARANCE: Kaneki doesn't look very strong--he's slender, a bit on the shorter side for a cisgender male, and overall not especially impressive physically. Somehow, he is even weaker than he looks. Despite his wiry build, he doesn't look like a strong breeze would bowl him over...but his strength and endurance are both extremely low. Physical pursuits are just not his thing, and he lacks any athletic interest or ability. He is handsome, though, definitely a pretty boy who knows it. He is a bit vain, and enjoys showing off his body, though he covers up when needed. He likes flowing robes quite a bit.
His dark hair is often slicked back, largely because he thinks it makes him look cool. His eyes, a brown so dark they appear black, are handsome and warm. Despite his naturally tan-hued skin, he doesn't see the sun as often as he should.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: Intelligent and cunning, Kaneki knows what he wants and how to get it. He is careful and cautious, thinking things through and planning for every contingency...but he will impulsively ruin all of his carefully laid plans in one moment of stupidity. He is a surprisingly emotional and passionate man, prone to acting on impulse and making rash, emotion-driven decisionsThis contrast is the bane of his existence: rational, logical Kaneki will plan five turns out, prepared for everything, but in the moment, one act of stupidity on impulse ruins everything. At least he’s self-aware enough to see it. He’s sly and cunning, often able to manipulate situations to suit his goals, but one argument can result in disaster. He’s socially driven, despite his manipulative tendencies, but tends to come off as a bit pretentious. Overall, Kaneki is ambitious, but not malicious: he is largely driven by comfort, luxury, and control, but he wants the best for others, especially his loved ones.
Although Kaneki likes to think he is able to think for himself, he’s easily manipulated by pretty men. His moral compass is quickly thrown away when someone flirts with him, and he stops functioning. Who is cool and collected Kaneki? All you see now is a flustered mess! Although charismatic, Kaneki is a bit of a stuck-up bastard. He’s wholesome towards his loved ones, and can be sweeter and more sentimental--especially around potential lovers--than one may guess.
Kaneki is not athletic, and he knows it. He will actively try to avoid any manual labor or tasks that make his lack of ability evident. This means he will try to convince others--with varying degrees of success--to do work for him. At Semaca...this is a difficult lifestyle. His family considers his lack of strength and physical ability as a problem, leading him to be a bit resentful of them.
HISTORY
FAMILY:
-Father: Masanori
-Mother: Ina
-Sister: Handler Chichi
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: He is unfortunately single.
BIRTHPLACE: Telgar Weyr
HISTORY: Kaneki was born in the winter of 2748, a couple of turns after his sister, Chichi was born. While Chichi was always closer to their father, Kaneki was his mother's son through and through. His father wanted him to be tough, to learn how to fight, and even from a young age, Kaneki had no interest in such things. He was pretty, he was smart...but he was not strong. He only wanted to be respected, and he did not get it from his father. He never really felt it from Chichi, either. Even though Chichi loved him, thought he was smart and admired that, he always felt like he was living in her shadow. She was strong, she was respected by their father...but Kaneki was not. He resents her to this day, ever so slightly, for how much their father prefers her, but he also cares deeply about her. If only their father would stop telling him to be more like Chichi...
This theme continued throughout his life. Kaneki adored his mother, and would do anything for her, but always felt distant or looked down on by his father. His sister...he always loved her, but sometimes he felt like she didn't respect him.
During his youth, he excelled at his studies, which Chichi and his mother supported. He had many friends, none of them especially close but was general adept at manipulating social situations. In his teenage years, drama tended to explode at moments, and he found his relationships to be a bit tumultuous.
Kaneki became a candidate as soon as he could. He had always admired dragons, wanted to take to the skies and have the prestige that came with riding one. He didn't immediately impress, much to his surprise and disappointment. His sister would Impress--but she Impressed a wher, which he felt like was "settling."
In Fall of 2769, a Semacan rider came to Telgar. Apparently he had a sister in Telgar, so he visited often. Kaneki was smitten immediately, and wrote to the rider constantly. Once a week, the Semacan rider would come visit, and they began to date a couple of weeks after their meeting. Long distance, even with a rider, was difficult, so a mere season later, in Winter, Kaneki moved to Semaca, for no reason other than his smitten feelings.
In Spring of 2770, the rider dumped poor Kaneki. He refused to leave the Weyr just for that reason, but he started avoiding his ex constantly. He was heartbroken, and Chichi comforted him to the best of her ability. She even got him a firelizard egg, which he was very excited about. The little bronze, upon hatching, bit his finger. The first thing out of Kaneki's mouth was "Rude forsker!" Unfortunately, the little creature started responding only to Rude, perhaps out of spite.
Kaneki often received letters from both parents. The ones from his father were judgmental, asking about whether Kaneki had started athletic pursuits and reminding him that he would be able to Impress men more easily if he just learned to fight. Kaneki rarely wrote back. His mother's letters felt more supportive, and he consistently wrote her back, even missing her.
Over the next turn or so, Kaneki worked towards winning over more people. Trying to put plans into fruition. He'd have to wait for five turns after Impressing, but he could be patient. Leadership was within his grasp, and until then, he could live a comfortable, even luxurious life as a dragonrider.
Which was probably not an accurate ideal at Semaca, but he was too stubborn to leave, especially when Chichi had settled in so well, and she'd followed him here.
