FULL APPEARANCE: Hy'daeus is, if anything, pretty, though few would call him handsome. He has delicate features, complemented by deep blue eyes and framed by blonde hair kept in a braid to his shoulder. He is tall and slender, with hands that continue to maintain their grace despite the various calluses that fit his upbringing as a Harper and his occupation as a rider. While he maintains his hair well, he prefers simpler clothes, often found in dark grays outside his riding leathers. They show off his hair and eyes well and are simpler to maintain.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: Hy'daeus is very perceptive, in that he can read body language and tone of voice fairly well. He doesn't necessarily use this knowledge in any productive way, such as diplomatically deescalating an argument, for example. No, he acknowledges that he doesn't have the social skills to do much that's actually useful with his observations, at least not directly, but likes to make them anyway. He likes to comment to such friends as he has privately about what's going on, hoping maybe they can help where he can't.
He also has an excellent ear for music and a good eye for art, but again doesn't have the skills to be a good performer or artist himself, or the desire to practice at those skills. No, Hy'daeus is content to observe and report on his findings. He is deeply loyal to his friends and tries to help them in any way he can, but he has also been known to cause chaos for people he dislikes through indiscretion or misdirection.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given his appearance, Hy'daeus is quite vain. He has been known to be late to lessons and drills because his hair was not exactly to his liking, and he avoids dirty work as much as a rider possibly can. He can't really avoid much, to be fair, but he won't go above and beyond if it means he'll get messy. He's especially particular about his hands, somewhat melodramatically lamenting the calluses and scars that he's accumulated as part of dragonriding.
HISTORY
FAMILY: Harper parents, no siblings
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: N/A
BIRTHPLACE: Harper Hall
HISTORY: Hyth was born in the Harper Hall to two journeyman harpers who did care about their son but ultimately prioritized their careers over personally raising their child, or having any further children for that matter. He was mostly raised by the creche, though he was on friendly enough terms with his biological parents.
He had an uneventful enough childhood, disliking playing in the mud and dirt more than some of his peers but otherwise getting along well enough with the other children. When he was about ten or so, he started more formal Harper training, mostly because several of his friends were doing it too.
Hyth had a better ear than many of his peers, cheerfully pointing out their intonation mistakes and earning some dislike. He also excelled in music theory, but rather less so in performance. He was indeed almost always in tune, but he lacked the passion and desire to perform, and remained fairly mediocre in that regard. He was a little better at the harp than he was at anything else, but he'd never be a soloist at a large Gather or anything like that.
Both due to his aptitude for theory and ear training and maybe a little because his parents prodded him, not wanting to see their only son wash out, Hyth walked the tables at twenty-four. He was posted to Igen Weyr, who needed some fresh blood to help teach the weyrbrats.
Hyth was not a fan of children or teaching, much less teaching children, and clearly did not enjoy his job, though he didn't take it out on the children themselves. Fortuitously for him, a couple of months after he started at Igen, he was at the Weyr lake nursing a headache from the earnest but out-of-tune children. It wasn't the headache that was fortuitous, of course, but rather the Searchdragon at the lake, who thought Hyth might like dragonriding better than teaching.
Hyth, in fact, was pretty sure he would like most anything better than teaching at this point. He promptly sent a message to the Harper Hall, recommending an even more recently graduated friend who liked both warm climates and teaching children much better than he did. With his original job taken care of, he threw himself into candidacy, though he had some regrets after finding out just how physical the entire thing was. Again, fortuitously for him, at his very first Hatching, he was found worthy by a dragon. Not just any dragon - a garnet dragon, adorned with bronze. A chimera, in a time when garnet dragons were still new.
Igen was not a good place for an unusual dragon. It had only been two Turns since garnets' appearance on Pern, and Selpith being a chimera didn't help matters. Far from it, in fact - some even said that she should have just been a bronze and what a waste it was to have her be a "freak." Hyth stood up for his dragon as best he could but quickly reached a point where he and Selpith were done.
Soon after their graduation, they put in for a transfer to Telgar, which was colder but also less hidebound. The Harper Hall had also been colder than Igen, so the change was welcome for more reasons than one for Hyth.
The pair settled in and found their home at Telgar, and remained there for several Turns. If not for an unfortunate ending to a romantic entanglement, Hyth might well have stayed there for the rest of his life. But the unfortunate ending did happen, and so Hyth packed up his life and moved continents. Plus, Selpith appreciated the return of the warmth in which she'd grown up.
