FULL APPEARANCE: Hymn is slender in form, without much in the ways of muscle. At best, he's lean. He is, however, relatively tall, at 6'2", but not absurdly so. He wears his hair long, black waves that reach halfway down his shoulder blades. Although his eyes look sharp and piercing, his distance vision is terrible, and he requires glasses. He wears round frames, which, while not perfect, correct his vision significantly. His near vision is perfectly fine, which is good considering he is a healer apprentice. He has a masculine appearance, with thick eyebrows and a masculine build, without much in terms of curves. Generally, he prefers to wear dark colors, though he will, at times, wear a cloak that his mother bought him, despite its powder blue coloration.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: Although he is not, physically, a grumpy old man, Hymn certainly acts like one. For one thing, he's a killjoy and doesn't particularly care for "fun." While he won't stop others from having fun, he WILL sit there silently and look miserable when dragged to events. He doesn't have a sense of humor, and doesn't seem to have the ability to relax. In fact, this grouchy man doesn't seem to enjoy much, if anything, and always has a complaint ready, if needed. Although he will support others anyways, he can be quite judgmental, both towards situations and towards people themselves. Despite his words and grouchiness, he will protect and defend anyone who needs it with his life. When it is necessary, in fact, he is surprisingly gentle and patient. He is a great listener and, even if he doesn't understand someone, he will try to support them. He might have a few sarcastic remarks to share, first, though.
One of Hymn's biggest "regrets" is becoming a dragonrider. He dislikes dragons, though he hadn't realized it at the time of candidacy, and he is very done with Gienath, who is overwhelming and exhausting to him. He is bitter and resentful, and while this isn't just about dragons and Gienath, it is mostly about dragons and Gienath. He's often angry, but lets it stew within him rather than lashing out, though he might give a sarcastic response or insult someone. Hymn doesn't seem particularly nice, and his jaded worldview only adds to that. He is disenchanted with life, pessimistic, believing that very few people in this world have good intentions.
Some people thrive on drama. Hymn finds it petty and pointless, and would rather just do his own thing. As a result, he is often a neutral party when others feud, flat out refusing to pick a side, even if his beliefs align more with one or the other. He just wants to do his own thing, to live his life. He doesn't need his life to be interesting; getting by is more than enough.
Hymn enjoys writing. It's not the content, though. He likes the way his penmanship looks, enjoying calligraphy and handwriting as hobbies. He hates water, which makes him nervous. He always bathes when no one else is around to see him get anxious, if he can help it, and avoids deep water whenever he can help it.
HISTORY
FAMILY:
-Mother (Semaca)
-2 Aunts (Semaca)
-Several Cousins (Semaca)
-Father (unknown)
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: (optional)
BIRTHPLACE: Igen Hold
HISTORY: Despite being an AFAB infant, Hymn was practically born a bitter old man. As soon as he could talk, he came across as intelligent, but grumpy. Mature, but bitter, and at first, for very little reason. His mother loved him, though she was a single mother and a hard working drudge. He was raised by her and her sisters, alongside several cousins, in Igen Hold. For much of his life, he didn't know who is father was. His father had some degree of social and structural prestige, one who was married...but not to Hymn's mom. His mother didn't try to force fatherhood on the man, preferring to raise him herself than to even let the man know.
From a young age, he adored his mother. She was the only reliable person in his life, and as he grew, he would want to protect her and keep her safe. He saw how hard she worked as a drudge, and with such little reward.
At 10, he asserted his gender and chose the name Hymnor, which would be shortened to Hymn following Impression. Everyone in his life was supportive of his transition.
His mother had wished to be a dragonrider, all those turns ago--a life of prestige and glory, why wouldn't she?--so when Hymn was offered search to Igen Weyr, she was thrilled. She encouraged him to go, and as he would do anything for her, he accepted search. At first, he relatively neutral on the idea of dragons, and didn't like the idea of flying thread, but he imagined a bondmate would be nice. Someone he could rely on, someone he loved.
He took on some odd jobs at the weyr, as a candidate, and sent every mark back to his mother. He didn't Impress immediately, and as he got closer to aging out, he apprenticed as a healer. It would be something, if he didn't Impress; and if he did Impress, well, he could avoid flying thread. He ended up being rather good at it, as well. By the end of his candidacy, he began to hope he wouldn't Impress. He started to find dragons a bit weird, but his mother was so proud of him as a candidate. He couldn't leave candidacy, nor could he tell her--or anyone--that he didn't actually want to Impress.
In early 2763, Hymn stood for what might have been his last dragon hatching. He would age out later that turn. He didn't have any thoughts about Impression, but to his shock, Gienath picked him. Their relationship was...interesting. Hymn almost regretted it, wished Gienath had picked someone else, anything. After graduating weyrlinghood, he often visited home, and his mother adored Gienath. She was so proud of him that it almost made up for Gienath being themselves.
He moved to Semaca in 2768, and he sent for his mom, her siblings, and his cousins to join him. He imagined that retiring to the sun and sand would be nice. It wasn't. Almost immediately after his transfer, there was flooding. And the weather was too hot. And there were annoying gnats. And the area was so untamed. He had a lot to complain about. And then pirates showed up? And spotties attack? And the pirates integrated into the weyr? And then a pirate Impressed to a gold? What the forsk was the world coming to?
