FULL APPEARANCE:
Spengler is a very tall and lean man. He's pale, has a strong nose, and requires glasses to see. He has dark brown eyes and dark brown hair which is curly and styled similarly to a pompadour. He's not really one for smiling, at most you'd see the odd smirk, so his laughter lines are rather light.
Spengler dresses very formally, but not fancily. He's business-casual at the most... and the least. He will always dress aptly for each season, but always finds himself a bit overdressed for the Semacan weather. He walks fast and very directly to wherever he needs to be, he's not one to lollygag around.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
Spengler is first and foremost an academic. Since arriving at Semaca, he taught himself to read and has been absorbing everything that he can about the world at a record pace. His favorite things to learn about are plants and fungi, but despite his love for learning, he never wanted to turn that into a future in the crafts. He has a very analytical mind, is hard-working, and very focused. Spengler would describe himself as always serious, and for all intents and purposes, he is. He can be rather sly and humorous. But even at his silliest, he is still monotone and deadpan. This helps him stay brave and level-headed in the face of danger.
He's not much of a talker in general, but when he does he's very pragmatic and straight to the point. His emotions are something that he has a hard time articulating to others. One may call him eccentric. He does tend to greatly understate the severity of situations. He's not very interested in romance, but that's more because he believes that he would not be enough for someone else, or that he would ruin the relationship one way or another. It's irrational, but it's a plaguing thought.
Spengler's fatal flaw is his ever-boiling temper. It's something he's never had a hold of, and it appears out of nowhere when he gets frustrated.

HISTORY:
Spengler was the youngest of two children from a small hold north of Fort Weyr. He had a quiet and average childhood, nothing to shake a stick at. His lifelong passion for learning began with a traveling harper stopping to tell histories from across Pern.
He never had a lot of friends in his early years, but eventually, another kid by the name of Stanz started talking to him and declared them friends. Then, Stanz brought over his other friend, Venkman. The three, despite being wildly different in personality, became close rather quickly. Eventually, Stanz and Venkman's want to become guards rubbed off on Spengler, and when they reached the appropriate age, they bought wher eggs together. Spengler bonded to an equally nerdy, but far more social, green, Spesk.
Over time, more people came into their circle of friends from work. A lady named Janine came along first, followed by a man named Zeddemore. The five of them had a good life, working hard and hanging out afterward. Spengler thought it was as good as life could get... but he wanted more. While it was great, and he deeply cared for his friends, the urge to learn and explore was starting to bubble up within him. He just kept pushing it down. It wasn't like he could do any learning at the hold, Faranth, he couldn't even read. He was stuck to gathering information from the odd traveling Harper's tales.
In his spare time, Spengler was getting to know a lady named Aibell. She was nice and his type, so they managed to hit it off. It was never anything formal, but they did end up having a child together. Calliope, or Callie as he called her. She was his whole world, and all his time off of work was spent looking after her.
And then he had a slightly earlier-than-normal midlife crisis. After a close call during his guard work where a bandit got rather aggressive, he realized that life was very short and that his job was much more dangerous than he had previously predicted. He was restless and could not stand being in the hold anymore. He needed to leave and explore the world to learn. So, about a turn after the establishment of Semaca, he got up and left. Didn't say a word to anybody, just gave Callie a big hug, went out the door, and never looked back.
He thought he had made the right decision for a long time, seeing as Semaca brought along plenty of new opportunities to learn. Yes, he missed everyone, but he sent them letters. Wasn't that enough? As time passed and a near decade came and went, however, he began missing them deeply, especially his daughter. He taught himself to read and began to send letters home for one of the literate residents whom he was acquainted with to read to his family. While the letters he sent never decreased in frequency, the responses he got did. All he gets is the odd update from his friends, and the odd detail about his young grandchildren from his daughter.
Nowadays, he's been investing himself in his work in Requiem, especially since the spotty attack. Easier than thinking about burned bridges.
