In terms of apparel, she almost always wears a full set of sturdy leathers. She prefers her clothes in vibrant colors, and gets her leathers custom dyed by leathercrafters to reflect her preference. Rarely she can be found wearing more comfortable and revealing clothes, but she prefers her clothes to be practical and ready for action at a moment's notice.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
Mawkin is a serious and quiet person, often preferring her actions to speak for her. When it comes to conversation, she prefers to listen and calculate the most efficient response. Not one to open up easily, she has a cool, professional exterior and a matter-of-fact way of speaking. She is detail-oriented, and often takes extra time to note small things, and keeps an extensive journal in her free time. Because she is so focused on the details, she's been jumped by a foe more than once while in the jungles of Semaca, as well as surprised by someone coming up to talk to her.
She is also a bit of a loner, and prefers to keep to herself and work on her own when possible, instead of working as a team. She fully believes that she works more efficiently following her own path instead of following all the procedures to the letter. Mawkin sees the rules more as suggestions, and will not hesitate to break them if she feels her way is better or if following procedure will slow her down in a time of crisis. She is an absolute headache for any leadership in charge of her.
Above all, Mawkin adores animals of all shapes and sizes and is not afraid to help an injured critter if she sees one. In general, she cannot stand to see others in danger, and will go to help someone in need, even if it endangers herself.
HISTORY
FAMILY:
Father - Rider
Mother - Rider
Father Figure, Master - Thoha, Scribercraft Master
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: Nope
BIRTHPLACE: Igen Weyr
HISTORY:
Mawkin was born to a pair of riders of Igen, whom she never really knew growing up. She was raised in the creche, and was always a serious and introspective child. From a young age, she had an interest in books and scribe work, so she began to apprentice under Thoha, a Master of Scribercraft.
The detailed and disciplined work suited her well, and Thoha was a patient and loving teacher. He ended becoming more of a father figure to Mawkin than just a master teaching an apprentice, teaching her just as much about the world and life as he did books and scrolls. He was the first one Mawkin confided in when she realized she was truly a woman, and he was nothing but supportive and even found some tales of trans heroes in Pern's history for her to study and be inspired by.
Mawkin would have been quite the skilled scriber, if not for her restlessness. Growing up, she had only known Igen Weyr and some of the surrounding holds, but she had read and transcribed countless stories of the diverse locales of Pern, and had a deep desire to see them for herself. At age 18, she decided she had learned enough of the Scribercraft for her purposes, and joined a trade caravan so she could travel Pern and record her own experiences.
She quickly had to learn how to handle doing hard labor in order to earn her keep while traveling. She found that due to her attention to detail, she was a quick study when it came to tracking game and foraging for food. Due to her love of animals, however, she was not particularly fond of having to kill them herself. After a few months of traveling, she bought a hunting hawk off another trader, so at the very least she wouldn't have to kill small prey herself. She named the hawk Old Bird, and he's been a valued companion of hers ever since.
While on this journey, she kept a dutiful journal, filling multiple books with drawings, day-to-day records, even writing down the various songs and tales she heard while traveling to have a truly complete account of the experience. These volumes were her most prized possessions, aside from Old Bird.
After several turns of the nomadic life of the caravan, she had saved enough marks to buy a wher egg off a trader. She had grown fond of the creatures as she had seen them on her travels, and was curious what it was like to be bonded to a dragonkin after reading so many accounts of riders fighting thread. The egg hatched a garnet with strangely big teeth, but Mawkin was enamored with the beastie despite her odd appearance, and bonded to the wher, now known as Mawsk.
It turned out, Mawsk was more duty-driven than Mawkin had been, and insisted the pair could be doing more for Pern than wandering aimlessly recording travel journals. Mawkin had little interest in fighting Thread, following the commands of someone never appealed to her, but Mawsk wanted them to be more. After much debate and hearing some rumors, the pair decided they would go to the southern continent, where Thread was less of a threat, but there was need for willing participants to build up Semaca.
Mawkin, Mawsk, and Old Bird obtained passage to Semaca on a pirate ship. When they arrived at port in Semaca, Mawkin's beloved collection of travel journals went missing. Despite interrogating every person she could, Mawkin was unable to find the thief before the collection was sold off and put on another ship, and she's had a deep distrust of pirates ever since.
Once acclimated to the weyr, Mawkin decided her talents would be best served in Mazurka squad, and joined them. Mawsk was a bit annoyed she wasn't in a more active squad fighting spotties, but mapping the southern continent was at least more useful than writing travel journals. The pair have been in Semaca for just over a turn, but are still getting settled in and finding their place in the weyr.
