FULL APPEARANCE:
Guzma is intimidating-looking. He's very tall, fit, and looms over a good amount of the Pernese population. His face is nearly always in a scowl, and the dark circles under his darker eyes come with their own bags. He has a square-ish jaw and a big slightly downturned nose. Guzma's hair is black, and he keeps it short on the sides and fluffy and longer on the top.
Guzma is a fan of wearing darkly colored baggy clothing- comfort always comes first in his world. He walks around with his hands in his pockets and a very pronounced slouch- his posture is downright abysmal. It's easy to tell he's tall, but with the slouch, it's even easier to think he was a few inches shorter than he is. His voice isn't very low, about an average masculine pitch. But, it always sounds like he's actively trying to lower it, so sometimes it gets a bit... crunchy.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
Guzma is not exactly a joy to be around. He treats almost every situation with a lack of seriousness, being a generally laid-back and unprofessional guy. He's a jokester, sure, but his sense of humor is often dark and at the expense of others. He's a yapper, that's for sure, loving to hear the sound of his voice. The way he talks though is pretty rough and abrasive. Despite his easygoing, lazy nature, Guzma has a natural talent for wherhandling and does fairly well at his job. However, he doesn't particularly care for training or practicing anything at all, so his talent is pretty much wasted. He's more often a hindrance than a help, that's for sure.
Due to his upbringing, Guzma has a very strong 'survival of the fittest' mentality. His ego is pretty large, thinking himself as one of the best handlers on Pern, so of course he's the fittest- right? Well, despite all of his talk, Guzma lacks any real sort of confidence. Faking it didn't work, but he's still trying to make it. If he fails at something, he takes it to heart. He'll beat himself up over it for long afterward. At his core, Guzma desperately wants to be taken seriously by others. He knows that he's quite rough around the edges, but he can come up with good ideas sometimes and doesn't want them to be ignored just because he's a jerk.
For all of his ignorant and nonchalant energy, the man does have a conscience. He knows he should work hard, he knows he should be nicer, etcetera etcetera... he just chooses not to listen to it most of the time. Underneath all of his faults, of which there are many, Guzma is incredibly loyal. The people who care for him receive a greater amount of care in return, he just delivers that care in a good ol' Guzma fashion.

HISTORY: [TW = abuse]
Guzma was not the favorite child, and that had some serious impacts on his psyche. Born the second of two children, Guzma and his brother, Willow, had a ten year age gap. Guzma was consistently compared to his brother. 'By your age, Willow had done this,' and, 'When Willow was your age, he'd done that.' He could do nothing without being compared to his smart and seemingly perfect older brother, making him hate the older boy from a very young age. The worst part? Willow wasn't even there anymore, he was off learning how to become a Beastcrafter. Guzma was hating a person he had never met. That didn't stop his parents from going on about their eldest and what a perfect son he was.
His father, unable to spend his time doting on his eldest son, began putting pressure on Guzma. Why hadn't he done anything illustrious with his life, like Willow? Willow was becoming a Beastcrafter, what was Guzma doing with his life? It was survival of the fittest in this world, and his father made sure Guzma knew that he wasn't fit to survive the way he was going on. Guzma knew he wasn't made out for being a crafter, so he was doing odd jobs around the hold. Wasn't that enough? He was working, he just wasn't a crafter, wasn't working enough?
No, of course not. Not to them. But to his best friend, Kukui? It was. The two were inseparable, Guzma's rough and tumble personality balancing out Kukui's fun and caring one. Kukui wanted to be a guard, but more importantly, he wanted to be a guard. That was something he could do maybe get his parents off his back, huh? Once Kukui turned 17, he bought himself a wher egg with his savings... so when Guzma turned 17, he followed his best friend's footsteps. There was something different about his bronze wher though, the skin on his back was kinda... weak. And then, a few days later, it seemed to be growing.... spines? So weird, oh well, whers could do whatever they wanted, he guest. He wasn't a beastcrafter like his brother, so what would he know?
After a few years of wherlinghood, the two boys became fully-fledged handlers and new guard recruits. Guzma thrived, he was doing great! He had some sort of natural talent for wherhandling that was paying off. He was getting plenty of priase at work, making plenty of friends, even his parents were proud of him! But, eventually, Guzma was lagging behind. Sure, he was talented, but he wasn't putting in the work. Without practice, without training, he wasn't getting anywhere. Sure, the experience gathered turn after turned helped him, but he wasn't making any moves to become better at his job.
Kukui began to surge ahead of Guzma, career-wise. Soon, the name that could send him into a tizzy just by hearing it was no longer Willow, but Kukui. 'Oh, Kukui's so good at his job,' 'Oh, Kukui puts in so much effort,' blah blah blah, yada yada yada. Their friendship, as strong as it previously had been, was withering... but only for Guzma. Kukui was still putting the effort into their friendship, but Guzma kept pushing him away.
Eventually, between his parents and his former best-friend, Guzma became tired of his hold. He wanted out, but everywhere else was so, so cold. Guzma was used to the island weather of Ista, and anywhere else would just be miserable. Well, that was until Semaca came around. He debated it for a bit, but then eventually made the transfer down to the southern continent. The wherhandler joined the Requiem Squad, and that was that. He hasn't talked to his parents, or Kukui, since the transfer... and he still hasn't met his older brother.
Guzma has been pretty chill with the pirates, to be honest. They're just people doing what it takes to survive, and he can respect that. What he does hate, though, is the spotties. The bronzepair is ready to teach those things a lesson... whenever the higher ups plan out an attack plan. He's not leading the charge against them, are you kidding? Once the call goes out though, he'll gladly hunt those things down.
