FULL APPEARANCE:
Castien is a rather striking young man, with tanned skin and light hair and eyes. His hair is sandy blond and messy, falling to roughly his shoulders. He keeps the majority of it pulled back in a low tail, while a section in the front is braided in a small, tight braid. His eyes are light grey and rather expressive, though his expressions are usually sharp and sarcastic rather than soft. He has several scars over his body, with two notable ones on his face--his left over his jaw and over the bridge of his nose. There are scatterings of them over the rest of his body, from various wounds sustained on the sea and from a rough-and-tumble childhood.
Clothing-wise, he dresses practically. Nothing too loose or too tight, and nothing in flashy colours.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
Cold, self-centered, and vengeful, Castien is not exactly what someone looks for when they want a new friend. He dislikes small-talk and hates rumours, viewing them as pointless chatter. He'd rather sit in silence than make up something to talk about. He's snarky, speaking the language of sarcasm fluently, and tends to attempt to act nonchalant at all times. He gets embarrassed if called out on his "nonchalant" behaviour, especially as he's usually more invested than he lets on, though still tries to play it off as intentional.
However, on the other side, once he holds someone dear he is willing to sacrifice everything for them. Castien does care, but keeps his personal feelings buried as best he can, usually embarrassed by any display of "soft" feelings. He's the sort to run away from certain emotions rather than deal with them, which can lead to trouble in the long run.
He has a soft spot for Pest, after many Turns together.

HISTORY: Warning: Abandonment
Once there were two Holders in a small unimportant sea hold. They did as adults sometimes do, and realized too late that there were consequences to be had. The donor vanished as soon as they discovered. The carrier was left to shoulder the burden alone. Until, at least, nine months later, when said burden was finally part of the world--then, they also vanished, leaving the child in the care of a distant relative. Said relative was not particularly attentive, but not neglectful or abusive either. They did their duty in raising the undesired child and little more.
Castien wasn't a particularly poorly-behaved child, but he seemed to know that his caretaker didn't mind one way or the other for him. He quickly learned that as long as he was fed and stayed out of trouble, he could do whatever he pleased. However, staying out of trouble often meant more not getting caught. Unsurprisingly, he fell in with a questionable crowd at a young age (or as questionable as one could get in a small cothold).
One day, around age fifteen, while down near the docks, Castien managed to sneak aboard a ship without being noticed and discovered a clutch of firelizard eggs. He was able to pocket one of them before making his getaway, intending to sell it to the next trading ship or caravan, and it was a full day before they noticed the theft. Or rather, a day before the theft became public knowledge, at whichpoint it was too late for him to hide what he'd done--a firelizard had hatched from the egg and bonded to him only hours after taking it.
Despite attempting to lay low, the sailors were quick to find and corner him with other members of their crew. To Castien's surprise however, he wasn't turned in for punishment--or worse. He instead found out that he had not stolen from simple traders but instead stolen from pirates.
Impressed with his prowess, they offered him a deal: work on their ship to pay back the debt he'd incurred by stealing the egg, or give them his entire savings to pay back the cost of the egg. Even knowing they were pirates, he accepted their deal to work for them. Although pirates were supposed to be feared, he couldn't help but feel some sort of kinship with them, and worked hard to "pay off the debt" he had incurred. Despite the difficulty of the work, it was quickly not a debt at all. In fact, he didn't even realize he'd done enough work to pay it off until they told him the next time they were at port that he was free to go--if he wanted.
He didn't.
Castien stayed on with the crew, working as an equal and carving out a place for himself among them. When they came to dock at Semaca in 2769, Castien became fascinated with the dragons and whers, volunteering for candidacy when the deal was struck between the pirates and Weyr.
