FULL APPEARANCE:
Hamuntep has a typical broad sailor's build with some muscle definition and an unremarkable height for a Pernese man. He has a light brown complexion and curly black hair that he keeps cropped close to his head if not shaved entirely. This is to keep it out of his way as he's working. His eyes are deep brown, and he has a wide nose and an extremely square jaw. He tends to wear loose-fitting clothes where he has to, and none at all where he can get away with it. It's not to show off but because he finds the feel of fabric to be a restrictive feeling. He can eventually get used to it, but he'll tug and fuss at it for a while before he gets distracted by something else. Otherwise, he walks with a confident stride and speaks in a clipped, precise manner. His expression is always a little serious, and a bit on the intense side.
He has a tattoo on his right shoulder, stylized curls that suggests the shape of a boat on the water, but which is abstract enough that it could also be interpreted as other things.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
Hamuntep is a very intelligent man, though in an intense, understated sort of way. He's fairly sociable, although that might not be obvious from his naturally serious expression. He is definitely a man who does things for his own sake, and is less than willing to share in any good fortune that befalls him. He'll use anyone if he thinks it will give him some kind of advantage or leg up in a situation, more than willing to throw someone else to the spotties to save himself.
That said, he's not afraid of death nor pain, more of being obsolete, overlooked, and forgotten. He'll go out of his way to make himself valuable to people in positions of power simply to ensure this doesn't happen to him. Anyone else is either a potential pawn or a potential roadblock for him, and he will treat them accordingly.
He is capable of friendship and affection, at least in theory, although it would take someone with a strong will to rival his as well as someone who's earned his respect. When he does become fond of someone, he tends to be a little overbearing and possessive, tending towards overly dramatic gestures for them. Rejecting these gestures will either make him lose his temper or else send him into a deep, depressive funk, with very little in-between. He's learned to take his anger out by using something as a punching bag, either the nearest large, sturdy tree or a large sack filled with flour or sand, and tries not to break anything genuinely important or to hurt people.
HISTORY
FAMILY:
Igen cotholders. He's not in contact with them
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: None currently
BIRTHPLACE: Small cothold across the bay from Igen Hold
HISTORY:
Hamuntep was born in a small fishing cothold close to Igen to rather average parents. His birthplace was one of no real consequence where nothing of note ever happened. Oh, people lived and died and had good things happen to them as well as bad, but none of it really made any difference in the grand scheme of things. Living fairly close to a major hold, Hamuntep learned this early on, and from a relatively young age, it bothered him that there was nothing particularly notable about him, that no one would care if tomorrow his cothold was just wiped off the map. This was obviously not a concern grounded in reality, but it was what drove him to seek out ways to set himself apart. He focused on acquiring a more thorough education than that of the other children in his cothold, but unless he wanted to commit himself to one craft or another, it would never be enough to truly set him apart. And there were enough crafters that unless he was willing to wait decades to be important, that was not a path he was interested in pursuing.
When he was eighteen, in an attempt to find something, anything to set himself apart, he got a tattoo on his shoulder. But since people's reactions to even that were fairly fleeting, he decided to stop kidding himself and get out of a place where he'd never amount to anything some months later. He joined up with a merchant ship and began sailing the seas, looking for a life of adventure and - hopefully - prestige.
The reality of joining a sailing ship with zero experience was much different than his dreams, however. He spent a turn as a cabin boy, his brains and ambitions entirely overlooked. In his nineteenth turn, the merchant ship was attacked by pirates. Hamuntep offered to show them where the captain hid the most valuable items (information he knew as the cabin boy who had to clean everything) if the pirates would take him with them on their crew. They agreed.
He took to piracy rather well, his ruthlessness and cunning serving him well. No longer held to the normal rules of society, he found he did much better at making a name for himself. He wasn't afraid to be ruthless, although he preferred to intimidate more than engage in actual violence wherever possible; once a pirate got a reputation for being bloodthirsty, after all, it was very difficult to be seen as anything else, and he wanted to be recognized for his brilliant tactical mind.
While his piratical career was proving more successful than his career on the merchant ship or as a rural polymath, it still wasn't giving him the recognition and acclaim he so longed for. The captain did not seem to want a young upstart who was full of himself as his successor, no matter how clever he could be. So when he heard that Semaca was putting out a call for candidates, and knowing that his former shipmate Phelps had been accepted despite his background, Hamun decided to try his luck there as well. After all, a dragonrider was far more impressive than anything else he could possibly try to be, and would be far more feasible now rather than in several decades' time.
